Night shift workers?

Hey ladies,

Anyone out there work 12 hour night shifts? How have you been dealing with the exhaustion? I'll have a 3 hour nap prior to work and i will still be falling asleep at my work area :/
Also, anyone thinking or will be asking their OB for a doctors note to avoid night shifts in the third tri? I've read conflicting articles that night shifts can bring on pre-term labour and or smaller gestational babies.

Re: Night shift workers?

  • No night shift for me but I would definitely try for a doctors note and new schedule - I'm completely impressed you made it this far! But yea, I don't know for sure but it seems logical that baby growth may be linked to circadian rhythms and night sleep is important

  • Im in Canada so there are different labor laws regarding pregnancy. I got a functional abilities form
filled out from my family dr requesting work that was to start no earlier than 0630 and be completed no later than 2230 hrs.  I gave it to my employer at 12 weeks and was put on accomodated work the next day.

Night shifts even after 6 weeks were tough for me.  I let my sgt and and platoon know I was pregnant and they covered for me if I needed a nap and there was a lull in the shift.

Id definitely try getting a drs note and see how your receptive your employer is.

    Good Luck!

  • It can't hurt to do th Dr note, and ask! Your health and baby's health is very important!

  • I've worked 12 hour night shifts for a little over 2 years now. I haven't had much fatigue, so I haven't changed my sleep schedule since becoming pregnant. I haven't heard of any risks associated with working night shift, never really thought about it, but I'm sure it has a lot to do with getting enough sleep. Do you group your shifts together? I find it easier to stay on a sleep schedule that way. I usually get 9-10 hrs of sleep on my first night, and 7-8 the second and third nights.

  • malariew3 I'm Canadian as well!! I may have to look into that form!

@kerriann0o114 unfortunately my schedule is completely sporadic, I could work a 7am-7pm the one day, a 6am-2pm the next and then a 7pm-7am night shift the next day :/

  • @R0824H No wonder you're exhausted! That's a horrible schedule even without being pregnant! I would definitely try to get off of that schedule ASAP!
