Layering under Swaddles

I'm drawing a total blank on how I should be dressing the boys under Muslin blankets swaddled, then eventually swaddle me sleep sacks.  DS ran hot so we had him in a onesie for a few weeks under a swaddle for temperature regulation reasons until he hit a certain weight.  He eventually went to diaper and sleep sack but that was in the heat of summer.

How have you/will you layer under swaddle for a winter baby?

Re: Layering under Swaddles

  • We used SwaddleMe swaddlers from the get-go. If memory serves me correctly, DS was in a onesie and the swaddle sleeping in the Rock-n-play with a blanket thrown over if needed

  • We live in a cold winter location and we keep our house on the cooler
side, especially bedrooms. With my fall babies I dressed them in a short sleeve onesie, sleeper or gown and a swaddle and if they were sleeping separate from me a hat in early days. Also most co-sleeping recommendations say that it's unsafe to sleep with a swaddled baby. I usually have them at least 6-12 inches away from my body if they are swaddled in bed with me or I unswaddle them, but would encourage further study on that topic...

  • We get fairly cold in Idaho, and H and I like our room really cold to sleep in. L still runs pretty hot, but he typically just slept in a footie pj or sleep sack. Since I was waking up every 2-3 hrs from hot flashes, I could easily adjust him if he was too hot/cold.

  • I usually did cotton or terry footed jammies under a swaddlers. Looking back, I don't think I'll be going that route again. I will try just a long sleeve onsie or gowns and go from there. I regret not using gowns with my first so I def want to try those this time.
  • My summer baby had a cotton sleeper gown or jammies on under his cotton swaddle, and I'll probably do the same for this winter baby. The house will maintain a pretty steady heat and won't be super cold- ideal temp for a baby to sleep is 68 degrees, which is what we keep our house at in the winter. Plus baby will be up every two hours so it will be easy to adjust if needed.

  • I'm not a fan of gowns, so we did zippered cotton footed PJs and cotton sleep sacks for the most part for DS1,  our fall baby, and probably will again for this little one.  I'm pretty sensitive to cooler temps, so we keep our house at low 70s/high 60s throughout the winter.

  • DD was a summer baby so we did short sleeve onesies and a swaddleme or halo. She also never allowed her arms to be in there...she had to have them behind her head.

This kiddo, if she let's her arms be wrapped up, it'll be a short sleeve onsie plus whatever we use. If she sleeps arms out then she'll get a long sleeve onsie or light footie pajama under the sack.

  • DD was a summer baby and we did the cotton sleeper gowns under her swaddle. I'm guessing we'll do the same with this one, maybe with an extra blanket thrown on top of the rock and play if needed! Our house stayed pretty comfortable last winter so I think she'll be fine in that.

  • DD was a summer baby so mainly a onesie and swaddle or a gown and swaddle.
Side note: is it just me, or are gowns way more of a PITA than they look like they'd be?!

anyway, muslin swaddles aren't very thick, so if you live where the winter will be cold (I'm in CT, so winter is pretty chilly!) I think a cotton sleeper and a swaddle would be sufficient.

@jennbaylor12 squee! I can't wait to have another little squishy baby burrito!
