Gestational Diabetes - Symptoms?

For those of you who are not FTM's (or are and were diagnosed with GD), did you have any symptoms? Did what you eat (or not eat) make you feel different? My OB suspects GD but I can't know until 28th week testing (5 weeks from now), and when you ask Dr. Google, it just says extreme thirst... Is it an invisible condition, or are there signs it's happening?

Re: Gestational Diabetes - Symptoms?

  • I will say I was worried with my 3rd that I had it because I always felt dry mouth and like I needed something to drink constantly. I failed my 1 hour by 2 points and passed my 3 hour. My first I was puking too much to think about it, failed my 1 hour and passed my 3 hour. I passed the 1 hour with my 2nd. So I've never had it, but with my 3rd I definitely thought I did. I'm hoping #4 gives me a break and I pass my 1 hour but that's not until Sept 2.

  • I was tested early, so I don't know why they're making you wait if they're concerned. I'd suggest following the GD diet as much as you can now vs waiting. I barely failed my 1 hour and then failed my 3 hour miserably, so I've been doing the GD diet since 16 weeks. Peeing frequently and thirst are definitely signs, but hard to tell when it's just pregnancy symptoms. I definitely felt the "sugar crash" if I had a big bowl of pasta and even now will get tired if I have a meal on the higher carb side now and then. Drinking extra water and exercising after a meal can help your body process the sugars better too. Of course, my only cravings are sugary things I can't have, so that sucks, but a few weeks of self control is the least I can do to ensure her health (and lower my own risk of having diabetes post-birth).
  • I had it but never had any symptoms. My sugars were just a little high in the morning though, I was never high during the day.

  • I had no symptoms that would indicate GD at all. I tested early (did the 1hr test at 18 weeks, and then the 2hr test after 23 weeks) due to medical history. So, there honestly is no reason that the test cannot be done early. Personally, I would ask to have the test done now, especially if you feel concerned at all about it. Standard diabetes symptoms could include always being thirsty, increased frequency of urination, sudden weight loss, always being hungry, etc. But with pregnancy, we don't always show "standard" symptoms of any illness due to the change in our hormones.

I can tell you from visiting the GD clinic that there can actually be negative effects if wait too long for testing and getting it under control. GD is caused by the placenta producing hormones that cause the pancreas to not work as normal. If you have unmanaged sugars, you can actually cause the baby to pack on weight faster than usual, and have a larger baby to deliver. Which could cause delivery complications. Good news is that if you do have it, most of the time the GD goes away after you deliver the placenta, and that GD is not a determinant of the baby having diabetes at all. (DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a medical professional, this is just what I was told at my GD clinic. Your medical team may have a different opinion on the subject.) The diet my clinic gave me is actually an insane amount of food, and is not difficult to manage just hard to eat as much as they want me to. I'm lucky that I'm still just monitoring my sugars, but there is always the potential that I will have to go to having insulin as well.
