Road Trip

Hey, Ladies. So, we're thinking about going on a spontaneous road trip to go visit family. I'm thinking about getting a pack'n play as a makeshift crib for the trip. He's 6 months now, and about 19 lbs. Would a pack'n play be appropriate? Do I need to buy anything else for it, like a mattress? I don't have time to go look at all the stuff at the store and change my mind 100 times, so I was hoping you all can give me some advice. Also, any other advice about road tripping with a baby would be appreciated. We're going to take our time and split it up as much as possible. Thanks.

Re: Road Trip

  • Most babies can sleep in the pack n play without anything extra, although you do need sheets.

Don't need anything else. If you're staying in a hotel, they may have one available too.
  • Yeh ask the accommodation you are staying in before you buy, I've had pack and plays provides by hotels and cottages etc
  • No advice just best of luck!!!my lo hates the car lol

We just did a big road trip and having the Pack 'n Play was great. I didn't even buy a sheet for it, I just used a big swaddle blanket...it wrapped around all 4 sides of the bottom and stayed there.

Also, make sure to bring a trash bag for the car. We also found it was easier to have diapers and wipes just stashed in the back seat pocket, so when we had to do quick changes, we weren't digging through the diaper bag. I also went and both a couple of new small toys for her to play with in the car, which helped with the bored one. Finally, we did most of our drive home after her bed time, so she slept for like 300 miles. Good luck!
  • My LO did a round trip drive from Dallas to Chicago and then a one way and we've done all of them overnight since she sleeps so good in the car. You might consider overnight diapers or doubling them since the angle they sit is just asking for leaks or a blowout. Get a car seat cover so the sun isn't directly on your baby and lights from the road aren't in their eyes at night
  • With my third baby we did a road trip and we packed a few things. Stroller (we went on walks, going out etc). I brought a pack n play and that's where she slept. A few blankets, a bouncy and bumbo. I wanted her to still have her things and not be stuck in one thing. Worked our great. But that was more for the stay.
  • I have the same question. We have used a pack n play twice when he was approx 3 months old. I wasn't sure if he was too big for a pack n play now at 6 months. We potentially will need to use it when he is 7-10 months with upcoming travel. The mattresses are a little flimsy so when he gets heavier is it still comfortable for him?  At what point do they outgrow the pack n plays?  Then what do you use?

  • We got a Baby Bjorn travel crib recently (were also looking at the lotus) and it works well! It even has a pretty comfy bottom/mattress to it with breathable mesh sides and since its directly on the ground there's no weight limit. I highly recommend!
  • I'm not sure what the manufacturer instructions are regarding size/weight of babies in pack n plays, but our babysitter's daughter just stopped using her pack n play. She turned 2-years-old a month ago and is on the smaller side, but I think it's fairly safe to assume a 7-10 month old should fit fine. She did have an extra mattress pad of some kind to make it more comfortable.
  • My niece just stopped using hers when she stays the night a few months ago and she's two . My baby is six months and used hers for a week vacation not too long ago no issues or problems . I did not purchase an extra pad just used a pack n play sheet and her sleep sack
  • I bought an extra mattress off amazon for our pack and play for like $35. We used ours for our first baby til about 1.5 (I dont know what the weight restrictions are) not really for an every day/every night thing but for vacations or for a safe place for her to play for a short time when needed. I dont think it's something that's definetly needed but I just thought it was a little more comfortable for her with it.
