I missed the beginning but am watching now. My favorite is gymnastics, but I like a lot of the events. These athletes are crazy talented. Happy that softball will be back in 2020!
I love gymnastics, swimming, and track and field, and the Opening and Closing ceremonies. I can't imagine having to make the decision about whether or not to risk Zika to go there and compete. I completely understand why some people backed out.
I love watching the Olympics! I think I saw Savannah Guthrie there on the Today Show this morning, and I can't believe she went! I wonder if she volunteered, or if NBC didn't give her a choice?
While I thought some parts of the opening ceremony was cool, I was easily bored by it. I'm really looking forward to track and field, swimming, diving and of course... Gymnastics!!!
We missed the first part of the opening ceremony but lucky for me they are replaying it in the MOTN so I saw most of what I missed. Overall I wasn't super impressed, but I always like the symbolism of it. I can't wait for volleyball and gymnastics.
The opening ceremony was suuuuper abstract. Good thing I had Matt, Meredith, and Hoda to explain it to me. I would have spent a lot MORE time scratching my head. I read that their budget for the opening was cut in half, and that they had to borrow money from the government to complete it. Still, it looked cheap as Olympic opening ceremonies go. I guess they spent money on the lighting first and on the concept last. Because the lighting was impressive and the concept and choreography were not. More samba and less slavery please.
And i I thought the whole third segment was way too heavy handed. Though I like that they are planting a tree for every country, that's a nice concept.
The outfits for most countries made them look as though they were ready to check my bag and show me to my seat. US looked like a beret and a baguette away from French characatures. (Though when the French came out, I thought they classy and fashionable)
I watched the opening ceremony last night until they started announcing the countries. I started to fall asleep. I thought it was just OK; kind of scattered and dragged out some segments. And when they were all dancing, NBC kept panning back to Giselle, which was annoying. I didn't care about seeing her. My favorite sport is definitely gymnastics! But I love men's beach volleyball, swimming, and track & field.
We flipped back and forth but I did not enjoy the opening ceremonies, not my thing. I like gymnastics and swimming, like most but don't care for Michael Phelps. Interested to see how the games will go, given all of the complaints from the athletes at the last winter games...
I didn't get to watch the entire opening as the walking in / announcing the countries took forever (and was boring!) and yes @KimmySchmidt I thought the same thing about the outfits. Ha. I forgot to add I'm excited for volleyball in my initial list. There are some events I totally forget about, but are cool to watch ie white water canoeing, pole vaulting etc. Just some really crazy sports I never think of until I see them.
I would not want to be there right now between the Zika, water issues and security issues. I heard some of the top American athletes aren't even staying on land - they're staying on a cruise ship docked off land. For security reasons etc.
I love the Olympics! I'm really sad to hear about all of the issues with Rio though, they certainly weren't ready to be hosting and it seems there have already been tons of safety issues. I hope everything goes off as smoothly as possible!
My favorite summer events are probably swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball.. can't wait!
@rock1cherry you're right, both basketball teams are staying on cruise ships. It's a combination of security and water/environmental concerns as well as most of the men's players have a clause saying they have to stay in a certain level of hotel and Rio doesn't have those many of those accommodations.
I have a ton of Brazilian friends and they've told me about some of the problems in Brazil and it really makes you appreciate living in the states (or Canada). Like in my one friends city every house has a 10 ft tall metal fence with spikes because if not your house would get broken into every night
Love the olympics! The weirder the sport the better! Plus, my favorite sport, rugby, is in the olymics this year (even if it is crappy 7s)!
The opening ceremony put me to sleep too, though from what I saw I agree that too many of the countries looked like flight attendants. I loved that Bermuda outfitted their athletes in Bermuda shorts!
DH kept shushing me last night during the opening ceremonies bc I was making too much commentary about everything. They had an interview with the planners before it started (did anyone else see that?) Where they said their opening games were better because it was a celebration of the world, not just an introspective look at their own country like all past hosts have had(internal belly button gazing were their words I think). Um seemed pretty country specific to me?
@Steephers123 I agree with you about the planners stating it was about the world... No loves, it was all about your country and that's fine. You have so many countries coming together that I feel that introducing your country/culture acceptable.

Well, considering they have one of the highest absolute poverty rates in the world, maybe they should have stuck to the half budget and avoided borrowing even more money from the government, then that money could have been invested in bettering the lives of the locals rather than a grand display for the sake of having a grand display. It's always sickened me a bit the amount of money host cities and governments spend on new stadiums, residences etc, at the expense of a population who probably don't give a shit about it. The 2010 Vancouver Olympics left quite the impression on it's population as well, not all of it was positive. I think the Olympics could do with a lot less pomp and circumstance, and concentrate more on the athletes.
I'm actually impressed that they highlighted the dark areas of their countries history i.e. slavery and colonization rather than glossing over it and going directly to the samba. Informed people around the world know the realities that the general public of Rio deal with on the daily, like raw sewage in their water, rampant disease (such as Zika), and lack of security from the incredibly underfunded police and firefighter agencies; to gloss over that is to basically say "we don't give a flying F@^# about our people, but here's some pretty lights, and we planted some trees guys, TREES!" Then again, they probably had to say something about it, because considering the boos that were heard through the crowd during the IOC's speeches, people are not fully supportive of this event for some very legitimate reasons.
I totally agree about the countries outfits... Seriously, are they ALL going to boarding school?! And yes, I will have the chicken entree Mr. Flight Attendant.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, I know a lot of people get super excited for the Olympics, and I love the events, but I don't think any event/concert/festival should come at the expense of it's native citizens, especially when the vast majority of them live in abject poverty and get to see their government put more money into a temporary event than they do into their own people.
Usually not into the whole Olympics thing but my best friend, Chloe Dygert is participating this year for cycling and I couldn't be more pumped to cheer her on!
@MamaSquishyB I didn't see her but that is awesome. There's also a swimmer competing that just had a baby a year and a half ago. Amazing
I'm such a pansy. I can't even walk to the mailbox and back without complaining of some kind of aches or pains right now, and here are these phenomenal women accomplishing amazing things.
Re: NBR: Olympics!
It's kinda weird lol but cool!
I really liked the rainforest part.
The dancing tin foil part I didn't get
