EBF baby constipated after solids?

So My DS was EBF until a couple weeks ago when we slowly started solids just once a day so far. I've recently been giving him bananas and oatmeal this whole week for breakfast. He loves it. It's just been about 1/2tbsp of banana and 1tbsp of oatmeal each morning. His last BM was Thursday, but all day today he tenses up and groans like he's gotta go. He acts like he's in pain and cries. Could he be constipated? It's a shrill cry like gas pains, but no gas being expelled. I feel terrible for him. Should I wait and see if he goes poop? Give him something? And if so like what? Lay off the solids or at least the banana? Try prunes? Any help/advice would be appreciated.
ETA- he usually poops a couple times a week as it is and before Thursday his last BM was Sunday.

My DD had this problem a couple weeks after starting solids. I think I posted about it in the food thread, but dehydration might've contributed for my LO, too. Definitely stop the banana (for now), and I personally would stop all solids until he goes and you can assess the poo (if it's formed and constipated-looking or if it's still "normal"), with the exception of maybe trying a jar of prunes, followed by extra nursing sessions. My DD poops less with solids, but aside from that one incident, has been doing ok. You can try inserting a lubed up rectal thermometer just a little bit in to see if it will stimulate the bowels to empty.

  • Side note: I cut back on the solids after that incident, since it seemed overall like maybe they were causing her some GI issues with all the grunting/fussing. Not sure if it was the food or coincidence, though.

  • My little one has the same problem BUT it's only w oatmeal, if I don't add oatmeal he's fine.try some prunes that made my little one go ALOT.Maybe see if dropping the oatmeal helps.we found banana  prune grape that also helps but try one food at a time of course!
  • Ok thanks for the input.
I gave him some prunes and added nursing sessions and he went poop tonight :)
These poor little ones are so tender!
  • Lurking from January - bananas can cause constipation.  Peaches, plums(prunes), and pears are all supposed to be good for getting them to go.
  • Bananas upset my LO's tummy (even when I eat them it seems). She loves spinach though and that got her pooping a ton (in a good way). Once we've tried the majority of foods I'm going to incorporate spinach into many of her meals

DoYou steam fresh spinach leaves and then mash it mixed with breast milk? Or how do you prepare it for your little one
  • @jarob747 I steam fresh baby spinach then pop it in the blender and it liquifies very easily. I do add Breastmilk sometimes but I don't even think it's necessary after steaming.
