Stuffy Nose

Is anyone else really stuffed up?! What can I do to clear it? Its awful. I have been doing saline spray, but its not cutting it. I also got a bloody nose too. UGH.

Re: Stuffy Nose

  • I've been dealing with bloody nose this whole pregnancy, lol. I try not to take too many medications as a rule of thumb, so I'm even less inclined to take them while pregnant, but have you tried Benadryl? A quick Google search also shows that Mucinex is not safe during first tri but should be okay during second and third tri if you're not using it long term. If nothing else, keep the Kleenex and orange juice at the ready.

  • Always. Thankfully normally one or two good blows in the morning and the same before I go to bed get me through the day. I'm also waking up with a bloody nose. I try and keep the air in our room moist with a humidifier and that helps some.

  • YES! but like some PPs mentioned I'm usually able to clear the way with a few good blows. The bloody nose never seems to end :|

  • Ugh! So sorry. I forget why? Something to do with increased circulation or inflammation that stuffy noses are so common.
  • I've also had the stuffy nose since about week 6. I feel like I've had this stuffy nose for so long that I don't remember what it feels like to not have it!

Luckily no bloody nose for me (yet), I think I had a lifetime's worth of them as a kid lol
  • No bloody nose for me either, but I've been congested in the mornings and when I lay down pretty much the whole pregnancy. For a while it was all day and I was basically a tissue garbage monster.

It's gotten better lately, though not completely gone. I usually still have a little tissue collection on my nightstand in the morning for me to toss. It gets better later in the day and it's eased up some in the last few weeks - I'm not sneezing over and over in the morning like I was. I keep tissues everywhere I need them though. Everything I read about it says "gets better after baby is born." So I've just shrugged it off as one of those things and keep tissues handy. I'm not a big medicine person either. I prefer to just live it out if I can. Changing positions often temporarily transfers pressure, so I do that for relief if I'm feeling particularly stuffy.

My doctor said that the basic Mucinecx was safe, just not the Mucinex-D. Also the basic Sudafed is safe to take as well. I haven't been sick in a while, but whe I was o took Mucinex at night just so I could get some sleep

You can find an entire list of what drugs are safe while pregnant. I just googled decongestants for pregnancy.

  • Do you guys think pregnancy makes colds last longer? I'll hit the two-week mark on this one tomorrow, and I am SO OVER IT. Still blowing out yellow snot (sorry, sorry) and now my throat is starting to hurt again. WTF? Is this a cold on top of a cold? Agh.

  • I've always had allergies, so runny nose is not that unusual for me. I've tried to take less allergy medication while pregnant, but occasionally take Benadryl, Claritin, or Zyrtec (all cleared with my midwife) when it gets bad.
I did get a bunch of nosebleeds right at the start of the second tri. I found sitting looking straight ahead, and putting ice on my nose helped it stop if it had been going on for a while. Also, putting Vasiline or Aquaphor on the inside of my nostrils with a q-tip ( sounds gross, I know) helped with the sensitivity in there.
When all else fails- just carry a ton of Kleenex!
  • It's been horrible for me too since the beginning of the second trimester :(  I wear breathe right strips on my nose at night, and occasionally take a claritin, which only helps a little bit.  It's very annoying!
  • Yes! I have also been suffering from lots of sneezing and a stuffy nose! I'm not sick. Instead, it feels like I suddenly have hay fever (normally not an issue for me). It feels like I'm just a lot more sensitive to allergens and therefore sneezing and getting stuffed up more. Weird.

  • Pregnancy induced rhinitis. Yup. Had it with DS and have it again with this one. I was pregnant June-March with DS, so all winter, so the nosebleeds were Terrible. Not nearly as bad this time, as of yet.....fingers crossed

  • Oy! Thanks everyone. Im hoping its a cold and it will go away - or it sure feels like one. But maybe when summer is over it will calm down a bit!!
  • This is me!! I always had a stuffy nose, especially in the mornings, and think I could have some minor allergies (never tested). But, since getting PG... it's been constant. I can usually clear some of it up with a good blow in the morning, and then when I get home from work. There is usually blood involved though, too.

My OB OK'd Benadryl, which I had been using before so I think my system is just used to it. Nothing seems to work great, so I just deal. It's just so annoying. Breathe Right strips do help a little bit, but I usually save those for weekends since my nose stretches out so much with them on.

I had a cold back in May, so still 1st trimester... it lasted forever and I didn't take anything for it just to be safe. I finally stayed home one day from work just to sleep, and that seemed to help. It was after I thought it was going away and then BAM... back again and even worse.

  • @ShariAllison I used Sudafed as well for a few days. Just make sure you up your fluid intake, it will seriously dry you out.
  • I wasn't feeling really well yesterday, so this morning I did a sinus rinse and I feel 1,000x better. And there is no medicine in it :)

  • @ve304856 I think I may have to try this, something about the humidity this week is making my congestion so much worse!
