March 2017 Moms

Any other high risk mommas?

I'm 30 and am pregnant with number 3. I was told after the birth of #2 that I would be considered high risk due to my son being born with a rare congenital, neurological defect. I'm just looking for what to expect.

Re: Any other high risk mommas?

  • Hi, *tw* if I don't miscarry this pregnancy, I am high risk.

My first son, I should have been labeled high risk but, wasn't until I went into PTL at 34 weeks and some change. I delivered him at 35 weeks.

My second son, I was labeled high risk and put on PIO shots starting at 20 weeks. I managed to carry him to 38 weeks.

*if* I make it past the first trimester with this one then I will also be high risk with the same protocol as DS2 mentioned above.

For me, they did more ultrasounds, and they measured my cervix. I was just watched like a hawk for PTL.

  • Hey there @iceandsnowflakes29, how are you feeling? I saw you when I was lurking over on TTCAL and wasn't sure if you were still with us. I've got my FX for you!

  • @scarlett830  this is officially the weirdest pregnancy ever.

I was SO SURE I was pregnant I got a blood test and it came back negative. At that point my H and I thought we both had line eyes and mind fetus. Then, I started spotting. Spotting went away, missed my period, go back for another beta, which came back very low (11), started progesterone because it was low with the first negative beta, and I'm waiting to see if it doubles as we speak. I still might have to leave. But, in the meantime, I decided to go ahead and participate wherever. I miss the girls on TTCAL and I feel "homeless" board - wise.  They need to make a "pregnant-but-might-miscarry" board !
  • Sending you lots of T&Ps @iceandsnowflakes29! Hopefully the progesterone works and your betas keep doubling! ((Hugs))
  • @iceandsnowflakes29 I hope the progesterone does its job and that you will be hanging out around here. Hugs.

  • That's fantastic news @iceandsnowflakes29!
  • I will be high risk. I delivered my 10 month old son preterm at 35 weeks via stat c section. My doctor discovered I have a bicornate (heart shaped) uterus that caused the early labor.

  • I believe that I will be considered high risk because I had a pregnancy last year that ended in a still birth. My doctor appointment isn't until next week so I'll know more then.

High risk, 40 yo, will be 41 at delivery and have had 3 losses. Scared.
  • I guess I'm high risk. I have a child already with a genetic disorder and I also have 2 blood clotting disorders. This will be my 7th pregnancy, 4th child. I try to really not get excited until after 12 weeks because I lost one at 11 weeks. I am not looking forward to Lovenox shots but such is life.
  • I developed HELLP syndrome with my DD at 38 weeks, so I will be referred to a high-risk OB.  I'm a bit nervous it will happen again, but much earlier in the pregnancy.
  • hi, i am pregnant for the very first time, from previous testing i found out I have a balanced translocation, has anyone had a healthy baby with a balanced translocation?
  • I had many miscarriages before the last pregnancy (which resulted in the birth of my son) I was traveling for work when I was 5 weeks with my son and found an OB who was amazing. She checked my progesterone levels (which had NEVER been done before) they were low, I had supplements and now have my amazing boy!

Here I am 5 weeks again AND I can't get a dr to see me to check my levels and see if I need supplements again. The primary care dr says not my problem (like literally told me that's the OBs lane) OB can't get me in for another 2 weeks?!? I've called around and the 14th is the earliest I can get in with anyone. Just seems asinine given my history.

Fingers crossed levels are doing their thing until then...

@vino831 I am surprised they won't just write an order for the blood draw before they see you! It's not like it would hurt to get it done, and it takes nothing for the Dr, nurse, or MA to place that order.

My primary care doctor for some reason is actually refusing. Says "I'm not an OB I don't known what the levels mean" which is wild bc A. You can google it!!! B. (And themore reasonable argument) she checked my levels with the last pregnancy bc I was about to travel for work.

This time she is saying that the travel was extenuating circumstances. Idk what hee deal is but I've already started looking for a new primary care.

As far as the OB I couldn't agree more. I'm stunned I've run into such difficulty. I've thought about fibbing. Saying I'm having spotting and going into the ER bc I know they do eveeything.

But I'm feeling fine so I'm trying not to go too batty just yet... lol

Its an awful feeling I just want this lo to have a chance esp if all it needs is a little hormone boost to make sure it has the growing environment it needs.

  • I will also be considered high risk due to my fertility issues, I will be on estrogen/progresteron through 1st tri, and will then be closely monitored, my 1st pregnancy I had weekly, then 2x week visits, I also developed GD & Pre-E 1st time around, so they will be keeping close watch this time as well.  Hugs to you all! Hope we all have a H&H 40 weeks!

I'd find a family doctor for your next primary care. Even if they don't do OB currently they're at least trained in OB so they have some knowledge! That's bizarre about not finding an OB to at least draw for it though!
  • I'm high risk as well. I'll be 40 @ delivery, I've had 4 prior losses with no living children, and I have a heterozygous MTHFR mutation. It'll be progesterone and baby aspirin for me!

@MissPrint1219  Not to try and play doctor here but I also have MThFR (and another clotting disorder). I have 3 children and 3 losses. After my first two losses the disorders were discovered and I was given Lovenox. Had my child no issue. Then we moved and I had to switch OBs and she believed I only needed a baby aspirin. Took that and everything seemed fine except I lost that one at 11 weeks. I was devastated. I switched doctors and my new OB put me on Lovenox again and I had another child fine, no issues. So I really truly think the aspirin worked but not enough and is why I carried so long until 11 weeks (vs my other miscarriages which were at 5 and 6 weeks before). So long story short, I would definitely ask about Lovenox!
  • I have MS and Epilepsy as well as Leiden Factor V. This is our first baby and pregnancy.  I'm 33 and it happened on the first try. Will see the regular OBGYN on the 25th and will be referred out to the high risk OB then.
  • I have MTHFR and APS, as well as a history of PTL.

@KellyT22 Do you have a partial or complete bicornate? I have a partial bicornate, but they're not treating me any differently.

  • Thanks @Luckycharm1068! I should clarify that my first and last losses were CPs, with the middle two 12 and 9 weeks respectively. I was under the exclusive care of a "regular" ob who was completely obtuse to a lot of things including MTHFR. For example, I asked for a progesterone draw at 6.5 weeks with my third pregnancy, and it wasn't until after I lost it that she admitted my levels were "a little low." My level (at 6.5 wks) was 7. After that experience, I demanded a referral to MFM, and am now working with a specialist who is well-versed in MTHFR. Because all of my other potential clotting factors are normal, we're sticking with baby aspirin for now, but will be monitoring and breaking out the Lovenox if needed. :-)

  • @vprod It's partial. I think the reason my pregnancy is being treated differently is because I had a premie.

I'm not sure if I'm really considered high risk but I'm 35 and I have Lupus. My last baby was born at 33 weeks due to severe preeclampsia. I will find out at my first appointment.

  • I guess I should chime in quick too :) I'm type 1 diabetic so I am also high risk. Fingers crossed these pregnancies are uneventful for us all!

  • I wasn't technically high risk with my son (now 2), but I was treated and monitored as such because his sister was stillborn at 40 weeks a year and half prior. For me, that meant lots more doctor's appointments and monitoring at the hospital. For the last two months, I went to the hospital weekly to have his movement and heartbeat monitored. I will be 37 when this baby is born, so I expect all the same things if not some more. Hang in there, ladies! All the additional tests, shots, and appointments are so worth the hassle when you are holding your newborn.

I just found out I have to see a high risk doctor in addition to my midwife because I developed preeclampsia during my last pregnancy. I'm not sure how I feel about that, especially considering that they induce everyone tgey consider high risk before due date. :/ I'm still trying to figure out what this means for me: like, am I atually high risk, or just potentially high risk? I guess I'll ask in three weeks at my next appt.
