IRL Birth Announcement Cards

Hopefully the title of this thread doesn't throw anybody off, but I was wondering if any of y'all are planning on sending out birth announcement cards to friends and family. I'd like to send out cards, but how do I decide who to send them to?? It seems like there's so many people that I could put on the list, but there's the whole issue that DH and I aren't made of money.
    TIA for the help! :)

  • DS was a November baby, so we did a combined Christmas card and baby announcement.  We sent it to our Christmas card list, which I think originated from our wedding invitation list.

Even though this will be a sept baby, I plan to send out holiday card birth announcements a la what @marajay6 did for her Nov baby. I'm from the deep south originally and not sending a birth announcement just isn't done in my hometown! It will go to a slightly bigger list than my usual holiday card list (I'll add a few of my mom's friends who have gotten us gifts and some more people from my hometown church).
  • @AMT1107 Never thought of it that way, but that makes sense!

Do the rest of yall hate getting them too? I guess everyone in my family has always sent them out, so I just assumed we probably would too.

If you really want to send out a card to everyone and their mother, but don't want to spend on ordering or postage, you should look into sending out an e-card.  Yes, that means probably fishing a bit for emails, but lots of places will let you send out a semi-custom announcement for cheap or free!

ETA: That is the first site to pop up on my Google search for them, filtered for free announcements. I have no connection or stake in using them for your announcement!  (Just in case it looks like a sales reference )

@rawarr I also hate getting IRL announcements. It's nice for a bit but then I don't know where to put it and I always feel bad throwing it out. That said, I know people who would appreciate one, like my grandma, MIL and parents. So we might do a couple for them but that's about it.

  • I should add, we probably won't do a birth announcement this time but add the information to our Christmas card.

  • I love getting them and plan to send out. Not to a huge list, probably our wedding mailing list like some of you said. You don't think it looks like fishing for gifts does it???? I have never felt like I had to send a gift if I got an announcement but just making sure.
  • We sent them out last time and will again.  We sent them to close family.  Grandparents/aunts/uncles/our aunts and uncles/ and very few close friends.  My family love these and keep them.  Most of my aunts keep every single birthday invitation as well.  We just got our cards from a package with the hospital pictures so there was no thought involved for me.

  • Yes we will send - we send Christmas cards each year so we'll use the same address list and maybe edit it down a bit.

Agree with PP - the original list came from our wedding.

  • I like birth announcement cards, but I probably won't do them again, especially since we usually send Christmas cards which isn't long after baby is born this time around. Almost everyone I would send an announcement to will have seen lots of pictures of the baby via social media, so it seems kind of redundant and 99% of the time, the cards get tossed anyway.
  • Yeah, when I get birth announcement cards I usually...throw them away....  Christmas cards I keep up for the month and display, but not really birth announcements.
  • I sent them to friends and family. I ordered through Costco and bought too many. I have a stack of leftovers.

I like getting announcements, annual holiday cards are not my favorite. Those I have no idea what to do with.

We recently pried open a steamer trunk full of my grandmother's keepsakes and momentos. So many holiday cards from the 60s and 70s of people I've never met and I feel obligated to save them because I inherited this trunk.

  • I dabble in graphic design so I'm thinking of making an announcement and just post on social media for extended family, not really send it out. I am hoping to do Christmas cards with baby to send out though. I love doing them and it'll be even better having a squish to show off.

  • I like announcements and Christmas cards. We have several up on the fridge. We did save the date wedding magnets and most of our friends still have theirs up too. It's kinda nice seeing them in each other's homes. :)
  • We receive them IRL and I always love the cute photos! It's a way to share with family and friends who we're not friends with on FB. I plan on ordering from Minted or TinyPrints (with a coupon code) and have budgeted to send quite a few of them out (DH and I have huge extended families). I also received a ton of $20 coupon codes on Shutterfly with the baby gear we received (e.g. the two Boppys), which allowed me to order new address labels and stickers of our maternity pictures. I ended up just paying a few bucks for shipping.

@SuperFudge00 is right though - Costco would be a great option for ordering the IRL announcements.
Check Groupon (when they have an additional 20-25% off) for ordering from other online sites like Zazzle.
  • I'm considering it.  Check groupon, they sometimes have deals for vistaprint.  Shutterfly regularly has coupon codes, so that is another option.
  • I was going to send them out immediately, but I think we're just going to send out pictures with our holiday cards. I love getting pictures of our nieces and nephews, especially since we have some spread across the country and we almost never get to see them. I keep them up on the fridge all year :)

If you're looking for good deals, I know I got a couple of shutterfly and tinyprints coupons from my doctor's and BRU goodie bags. Maybe check the goodie bags if you still have them!

  • Like others, we'll combine the baby announcement with our Christmas card.  I see no sense in sending cards in September/October after baby is born to then turn around send more in November/December.  Maybe I'm just cheap.
  • I don't want to do a combined Christmas card. This is our second, my first got her own card. I would like to let LO2 have he card to him/herself. They will both be on the Christmas card. With the dog if I can swing it.

  • We will be designing our own and ordering on Vista Print. I love getting real mail and sending it out. We will prob send to our wedding list (which has now become our Christmas card list) and a few additions. I plan to use a newborn pic the photographer takes a few days after birth. Very much looking forward to this part of becoming a family of three!
  • We send them out to older family members and friends who don't have Facebook. And our parents.
