  • This was overly discussed months ago.

No. Wear bug spray, don't travel to international Zika-threatened places, don't sleep with people who have Zika, and don't be a fear monger.

  • Not one bit.
  • I'm assuming you're bringing this up because the CDC said not to travel to a certain section of Miami? I have no fears of Zika in NE so I am not worried. I wouldn't travel to Miami right now though. I honestly don't understand how it's only in a small area of Miami- or how it can be contained to that area.

if you've traveled there then talk to your OB. I am sure they can do some testing. I have no idea if it's an issue with someone who's already this far along in their pregnancy or if it's just an issue to women that are newly pregnant.

My Nana did this too... We live by the ocean in NEand I'm on modified bed rest. Zero concerns here and it's not even up here!

thanks for the laugh this AM @kmolleltz

ETA- no.... not worried even a little bit
  • Living in Florida I'm slightly concerned but so far it seems contained to Miami and I just wear bug spray if I'm gonna be outside.

Nope. Just wear bug spray. When thinking of everything else that can affect a pregnancy, Zika is probably the least of my worries.

edited due to deciding whether effect or affect should be used.
  • I AM  :|

Not really though. No. Don't be silly.
  • Nope.  Not worried.

Looking at the stats, in Puerto Rico (where similar mosquito-bourne viruses like Dengue are a much bigger problem than in the continental US), 0.2% of the population has been infected with Zika, so the infection rate is pretty low.

Plus the species of mosquito that carries Zika isn't very mobile; they generally live their entire life in a 500 foot radius (which is why officials are hopeful they can contain the outbreak to a small area in Miami).

And for those pregnant women who are infected with Zika, only about 1% pass the virus to the baby.

I don't want to minimize the impact of passing Zika to an infant, and I'm clearly not traveling to Brazil or even Puerto Rico any time soon.  But the odds of an infection, even if you live in Miami, are very very very low.
  • No, when I brought it up to my OB he actually laughed and told me that should be the least of my worries. Like, laughed. Not to downplay the effects of Zika or those who have already been infected but the odds are low. Bug spray has been my BFF. And that's all.

  • I live in Massachusetts so I'm not worried for myself at this moment, but if I lived in Florida, yes, I would be. And after listening to the presidential speech yesterday I'm also angry with Congress for not settling on a funding plan to stop the spread and continue research. Maybe this should be an FFC but I think this is an important topic.

  • Yes, I think it's scary. I'm most worried for my pregnant friend who lives in Southern Florida.  Also, the fact that they turned up 10 additional cases just by going door to door and testing people tells me it's already spread more than anyone knows.

No. I went to Disney in June and never saw a single mosquito. Also, we are in the 3rd tri. Any risk to the baby is minimal at this point. It's much more dangerous in the 1st tri

  • Nope not at all I'm Canadian Eh and I'm not travelling my son is but once again to Canada.
Bug spray and stay inside at peak times. Is there not enough stuff to worry about in the 3rd triemester?
  • Nope. There have been a few confirmed cases in my county, but fiddle-dee-dee, they had all recently traveled to Zika areas.

  • Yes, I'm nervous. I know it's irrational, but I hate that I was in Florida only about an hour from Miami a few months ago. I'm like a total mosquito magnet too, so I use a lot of bug spray. I don't spend all my time actively worrying about it, but it is of concern.
