Fetal movement changes...

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced changes in movement? I'm feeling kind of paranoid about decreased movement, but it's not exactly decreased, it's just a lot different. Instead of distinct rolling/kicking/punching, I feel her, but it's a lot more subtle. I would say I'm feeling it less the last couple of days, too. But I'm not sure whether to call the doctor because I just had an NST yesterday (because of hypertension) and she passed, although it did take a good 15 minutes to get all of the movement they needed to check the heart rate.

I don't know if the movement is just changing or if it is something to be worried about. I'll call the doctor if I don't get regular movement by the end of today, but I'm just wondering if movement has changed for anyone else as they get further along.

Edit: I am just over 34 weeks.

  • How many weeks are you? I know as the weeks progress, movements get less defined because they run out of room as they get bigger. If you can still count 6-10 movements a day, no matter if that's just a rolling motion or a definite kick, I think you should be ok, but if you're really worried call for reassurance! I've definitely noticed more long, drawn out rolls rather than kicks and punches, but every once and a while she surprises me with a good kick to the liver.

  • Yep same here, she has been really active the whole time .... And still is but the movements are more subtle, a lot of shifting around.
  • My midwife said changes in movement are to be expected. As baby gets bigger, there is less room. My midwife said activity should stay about the same (i.e., there are certain times of day I feel the baby move around & that shouldn't change much), but to expect more of a ballet & less of a krump dancer.

If you haven't felt the baby move in awhile, try drinking a big glass of cold water or juice & lying on your left side. If that doesn't spur some movement, call the doctor.
  • Mine have changed as well. She doesn't move quite as often as before but she is also running out of room. When she does move, it's more painful than anything.

  • If the baby changes position the movements will feel different as well. My baby is now facing my spine and I feel the movements much less than when he facing the middle and kicking my side. Every so often he'll get a kick in to a side, but if his feet are kicking my intestines I have a much harder time feeling them.
  • Changes are ok, but if you feel "off" or noticed its been awhile since you felt anything drink some cold water and relax and try to get her to move.

I Don't want to scare you but I was part of August 2015 birth club and one of the ladies was feeling less movement and called the Dr, they told her to go in but she put it off till after her errands and it was too late. So don't chance it.
I'm 35weeks and with gd so I have to do kick counts per Dr and Nst weekly. so if I feel no movement for longs period of time the water helps.
  • For the past 1-2 weeks I've felt a pretty big decrease in movement. I've had a multiple NSTs that show baby is totally fine though, which eased a lot of my worry. I'll be 35 weeks tomorrow and at this stage they're running out of room and movement can also be affected by baby's position. My LO flipped to breech a couple weeks ago, right around the time I noticed her moving less. I would still call the doctor though and get some extra monitoring just to be safe. Things can get scary pretty quickly and it's better to be safe than sorry.
  • As the baby gets bigger, space gets more limited and movement will change and decrease...it's normal as long as you're still feeling it!

  • That being said, trust your mama instinct...if you're still feeling like something isn't right, better to be saf than sorry and go in

  • I had a sudden decrease in movement on Monday, which then lead to multiple NST's and BPP's. LO is moving like crazy now but it never hurts to check with your OB. Mine told me he rather me call than not every time. Hope everything turns out fine!
  • Well, my girl is back to her typical self, squirming away for much of the day!  This actually happened before, she was quiet for almost two whole days. Then back to normal.

    Thanks everyone for your input!
  • @lissvarna I'm happy to hear she's back to her squirmy self.  I also read somewhere that movement can subside during a fetail growth spurt.  So if it happens again, it could also have something to do with that too. :)

  • Yeesh I am having the opposite experience. Baby is moving like crazy and as other posters have said, it's less kicks and jabs, more rolling and elbowing which you can see through my shirt. Very bizarre, especially when laying down on either side.
  • I just wanted to update again that since those very quiet two days, baby seems more active than ever. I really wonder if it was a growth spurt or what? I also notice her schedule has changed, she used to be more active during the day and not so much at night, but now she wakes me up rolling around. Still busy during the day too though. It's interesting how after a slow couple of days her movement is more than ever.
  • @lissvarna I've noticed mine's schedule seems to have switched from being more active during the day/quiet at night, to now very active in the evenings. Glad to hear she moving for you!
