Dilating and Contractions at 29+ Weeks

Hey everyone,
Has anyone experienced braxton hicks contractions at 29+ weeks? I had them for two nights in a row for hours and 2-3 min apart regularly and ended up in the hospital being monitored. I started to dilate during that time as well. I have an appt tomorrow morning but I am just having a hard time not knowing why this happening. Just curious what others have experienced or if this is normal or not?I have them all day but not strong nor consistent until about 5-7pm and thats when they pick up. I have them steadily until midnight and then they slow down again.

Re: Dilating and Contractions at 29+ Weeks

  • I haven't experienced that but some of the women who participate on this board might have, so a quick search should lead you to their stories. I'm no expert but I don't think it's "normal" to be having contractions and dilating at 29w, which is probably why they had you in the hospital and are continuing to monitor with your appt tomorrow. I'd be curious to hear what explanations you got when you were in the hospital and what they say tomorrow, for others on our BMB who might go through this. Good luck!

  • I've had contractions since mid- second trimester and I've been hospitalized 3 times for them. They always stop after terbutaline and procardia. I've been at a 1-2 and 30% effaced since 26 weeks. No idea what I am now as they don't want to check and cause more issues. Currently on bed rest.

I haven't been checked for dilation, but I've been dealing with BH since about 19 weeks. It's gotten pretty bad in the past few weeks--I'm at 31 weeks now. I have to be careful not to overexert myself, stay hydrated, keep my bladder empty, and take a lot of rest breaks. I mentioned it to my OB and she didn't seem overly concerned but she did tell me to take it easy. Yesterday I did too much and I was having them 2-5 minutes apart for the better part of an hour. They went away eventually, but I was concerned. I just need to do less.

If yours are in the evening, I would hazard a guess to say you are either overexerting yourself during the day or you are dehydrated. Try resting and drinking more water!

  • BH are pretty normal for me, they were worse last night than before but I had a much busier, more strenuous day than usual and probably wasn't hydrating sufficiently.
  • I was hospitalized for contractions, cervix funneling, and dilation to a 2 at 24.5 weeks. After the labor was stopped I was sent home on very limited activity (basically bedrest). To this day, if I do not stay off of my feet for the majority of the day, drink water religiously, and keep my bladder absolutely empty, I have BH contractions constantly. If I do the above things, they are much less. I suggest taking it as easy as remotely possible and drinking more water than you want to. Listen to your body, it will make a difference. Contractions aren't a big deal until they start talking to your cervix, which it sounds like yours have. You don't want more than necessary.
  • In my case, contractions were brought on by a car accident. I did not have any dilation or effacing, though,  and the hospital was able to stop the contractions with turbutaline.  I am on the same boat as @von1976, too much exertion, not enough water, not taking it easy are usually when I notice contractions pick up.

Fingers crossed for you that they calm down!

  • Thanks ladies!! As for now, it seems as if I just have a testy uterus haha. My contractions stayed steady at 2-3 min apart even after IV fluids, and it follows my circadian rhythm and comes at night so they don't believe that its dehydration or exertion. They think it will continue to happen every day, regardless of bed rest or not because I wasn't extremely active on the day I ended up in the hospital. Thankfully I haven't dilated any more and where I am at isn't any cause for concern. I am heading back in on Thursday for another check and that should hopefully give us a better idea if it's affecting my cervix or not. This might just have to be what I deal with until I deliver.
  • Thank goodness you haven't dialated anymore!
