33 Week weight management

Hello all,

OB doesn't want me gaining any more weight for the remainder of my pregnancy. Any tips on how to manage third trimester hunger? I'm eating well, but I am not really tracking my food, so maybe I'm snacking more than I think? I'm already off carbs/breads etc., besides the occasional low carb or gluten free wrap when I'm craving something bread like.

  • I think it's completely unrealistic to expect a pregnant woman to not gain any weight in the last few weeks. This is when a lot of the weight gets packed on, and it's normal since during the last 5ish weeks baby is gaining about a half pound per week. I would eat as healthy as possible and not worry too much about the scale.
  • Did they give you any suggestions?

High fiber fruits and lots of water might help you stay fuller

I use Myfitnesspal to track food (I did it prior to pregnancy too) it shows you where you are getting a lot of excess, my problem is sodium.  I noticed when I cut out the sodium, or at least lowered my sodium intake, I lost a lot of water weight.

  • Try only drinking water, cutting out processed sugar, and only snacking on healthy things like nuts, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Do not be disappointed when you find it impossible to meet this goal.

I dont see you (or anyone) being able to lose weight at the same rate that the baby needs to be gaining it, which is what would have to happen.

  • I really hate when OBs start this mess when there's no medical need for it because all it does is fvck with your head.  I got this speech with both of my prior kids and very early on with this one I was told not to gain more than X this pregnancy.  WTFever people.  Short of having GD, I see no reason to make yourself crazy over this stuff.  You'll gain what you gain and you'll lose it in due time.

Now, I'm certainly not advocating anyone just munch up on ice cream and pickles for an entire pregnancy.  But so long as you're eating plenty of fruits and veggies, a healthy amount of protein and getting plenty of water, then personally, I'd tell them to suck it.

  • I'm with all the other ladies. Honestly how ridiculous. So the baby is suppose to put on a pound every 2 weeks and you aren't suppose to gain anything?? How does that work? So basically she wants you to lose weight to make up for the baby gaining. I'd punch her in the teeth and claim hormones made me do it. Eat healthy but don't watch the scale.
  • I'm also in the camp of thinking it's ridiculous to ask a woman to not gain weight for the last 7 weeks of pregnancy. Baby itself gains up to half a pound a week. I'd say if you're eating relatively healthy and moving as much as you can, don't worry about it too much. We have enough to worry about these last few weeks, OBs don't need to add to it.

I'm with other posters who think your OB is being silly. That being said, I know it can feel uncomfortable to go back to the next appointment having gained weight (which is inevitable because the baby is growing) and not having "tried" anything to manage it. If you do try something, then you can mention that to the OB and say you are putting in effort and ask what else they suggest. So, I'd also recommend tracking your food in MyFitnessPal, at least for a few days or a week if you tend to eat a lot of the same stuff every day. That way, you can see whether you are eating too much of something. I tracked my food for a few days and realized I was going over on sugar, mainly from drinking too much OJ lol. And if you realize you're doing nothing wrong, then you can still mention to your OB that you tracked your food, were eating the right number of calories and nutrition and leave it at that.

  • I haven't been on a scale in 2 weeks and I have no desire to get on one any time soon. I think I'll wait until my next appointment, which will mean over 3 weeks of no scale watching. I'm not going to beat myself up over it. If I gain a little extra that isn't baby related then I'll work to get it off, no biggie. If it's not harmful to the baby then it's the least of my worries! I'm more concerned about where the heck to put the Graco Pack and Play in our bedroom. If you've been gobbling sugar and carbs your entire pregnancy and haven't moved from the sofa, I guess it's safe to say that you might want to switch up your diet a bit, but since you're eating healthy then I don't think you need to worry about it.

Some doctors can be so set on the 20-35 lb weight limit, even though it doesn't make sense for every woman.  You think they'd know that? I've mentioned it before - my mom is teeny tiny, and she barely weighed over 100 lbs in her pregnancy years. She gained 60-80 lbs with each of us kids. Her Drs weren't concerned and within a month she'd lost everything but maybe 10 lbs of it. Every woman is different.

On the other hand, I've met a woman who is only a month behind me and she barely looks pregnant at all. AT ALL. She's very slender too. I'm guessing she's maybe gained 10 lbs, but after talking to her, her pregnancy has been healthy and her U/S have been great and the baby is good! So there are two examples of 10-80 lb weight gain that didn't mean anything bad.

All you can do is your best. At some point we all have to stop worrying about it.

  • That's insane! Plus, I would not cut of carbs completely... if you eat white bread and white pasta/rice, change for whole grain pasta/brown rice. I would not cut such source of energy. You can cut sugars (sodas, juices, candies).... but just to make it clear: when someone tells me I cannot have something, that's when I want it the most! So, I would say to go for small portions more times a day.

  • Nothing more to add except +1 for wanting to flip your ob off.

  • Don't think I can add anymore to the train of your OB has unrealistic expectations, but if you are really wondering how to manage hunger, go for higher protein snacks. Protein helps you feel fuller for longer.

Be realistic and don't fret when that goal is impossible. My doc asked to stick to 15-20 but also isn't super pushy about it. I have currently gained 16 pounds at 35 weeks and I'm pretty sure there is way more to come since baby is already weighing almost 7 pounds plus I'm always hungry.

The end is when most of the gain is had. Just try to eat healthy but don't stress or cut your food excessively as that will be worse then gaining a little extra.
