Has anyone seen this documentary? I watched it about 1 year ago and my hubby and I watched it the night I found out I was pregnant. Ricki Lake produces it/is on it but it's about about labor/delivery has changed over years....very interesting. Is home birth/etc for everyone? No but having a midwife/doula I think helps....I feel dr's are so quick to do surgeries (I had sprained ankle 4 months ago, had an MRI (BAD, BAD sprain) and the dr immediately said I needed surgery. I got another opinion and he never mentioned surgery. It's been slow to heal but I'm getting there).

FYI - if you're interested it's on Netflix right now (or it was last week).

  • I've watched this a while back but think I'll need to revisit it. Thanks for the tip.

  • Love this one. It's really good info. Even if you don't choose home birth, there are lots of good questions raised. I think everyone should watch this and read Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth. The sequel "More Business of Being Born" is also on Netflix, last I checked.
  • Ohhh....thanks for heads up @lovelongdog06
  • I stumbled across it on Netflix last weekend... I do want to watch it, just haven't gotten around to it! Good to know others think it's helpful.

  • I watched it when I was pregnant last time and I had to take it with a grain of salt. Obviously it's going to be somewhat sensationalized so that it's a good documentary, but I do feel that hospitals and doctors are moving back toward a more mom-and-baby-centered approach. I do agree that it is good to do your research and to speak up if you are uncomfortable, but I would be willing to watch it again to see if I catch something I didn't before.

  • Magheeta Agreed. I went back to it last night and then realized that I got halfway through it before stopping. It was a little too critical of those that are more medicinally based. Everyone is entitled to have their opinions and I'm all for taking in more information, but it felt very one sided to me.

  • @housewifehobbyist
SO MUCH THIS.  Medicated births are not unnatural. These babies weren't grown in incubators.  It's absolutely great friends whoever wants it to be able to have an unmedicated birth experience but let's please remember that women and babies regularly died in childbirth before medical interventions.  I'd rather live in an overly cautious environment where maybe there's more c sections than might be technically necessary than an environment where women and babies die in the name of being 'natural'.

  • I've heard this documentary is really interesting. I should check it out now that I have my BFP. Thanks for the reminder!
