Birth Experiences with Gestational Diabetes

Hi ladies --

I've just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and I guess it's pretty severe-- my practitioner looked at my food logs and glucose levels and said that with my "wildly appropriate" food choices but still elevated numbers, there would be nothing I could change in my diet to improve my blood sugar, so she put me on insulin immediately.

I know how to maintain a good diet and exercise regimen and all that, and I'm taking my insulin to keep my numbers under control, but I'm still worried about what this is going to mean for my baby and the birth. Does anybody have any experience with this? Was your baby okay? What was your birth experience like? I keep trying to research this on the internet but every article about GD seems to focus on diet and exercise. Obviously I will talk to my doctor at my next appointment, but in the meantime I'm just hoping to hear from other mommas who have been through it. I want to know if most are able to have normal birth experiences, if you had to be induced early or have a C-section, what it was like for your baby afterwards, etc.

Thanks in advance to anybody who can help!

  • Thank you for your answers! I feel much better to hear your babies were all okay :)
  • I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.  I had it under control with diet however my fasting number was always borderline.  My endo put me on insulin injections at night to control what I basically couldn't.
  • My last pregnancy I was diet controlled from 28w to 34w and then I delivered due to pre-e. I just met with my MFM last week because I've been dx with GD at 11w. He said my son was born completely normal size on track for his gestation and did not need sugar so he said it was a perfect outcome (for GD, not for pre-e obviously :)). He said that I can diet control for now but as the preggo hormones go up, it becomes harder to control and may require meds.

I think in the end what matters is that your numbers are good so you should expect a good outcome.
  • Hi guys plz advise according to your experience, im 27 weeks pregnant ive just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. My gynea put me on Glucophage but my physician is advocating for insulin, how have you managed this and what lifestyle changes have u made to assist with a complication free pregnancy. I also have high blood pressure (on medication for it too)
  • I had GD with first two pregnancies, diet controlled, vaginal deliveries of average size babies. 12 years later, third baby, have GD from 9 weeks. This time I'm on glyburide because my fasting numbers are high without it. I'm hoping to go early naturally as I did before. It's a pain, but it's doable ☺.
