Fenugreek supplement for milk production?!

I have been having to supplement from week one because baby boy wasn't gaining weight. I'm still nursing around the clock.....and the doctor and I are just coming to the conclusion that I'm not a big producer of breast milk. Bummer. I'm still nursing. I don't want to give up. I have been reading online the supplement Fenugreek will kick milk production in high gear. Anyone have experience with it?? I started tonight, it's once daily. They smell like maple syrup. Wish me luck!!! I'll try to update!!

Re: Fenugreek supplement for milk production?!

  • I have been taking the fenugreek tablets for about 3 weeks. I have no idea if they work. I figure they probably aren't hurting me so, why not?

  • If you haven't already tried these ideas, they seem to help me:
    - Oatmeal
    - Gatorade
    - Lactation Cookies (with brewer's yeast, flaxseed meal, and oatmeal)
    - Lots and lots of water

Hope the tablets work for you!
  • I started taking them today! My sister used them with great results!! At my daughters 2 week dr apt yesterday I asked out pediatrician about them and he said they are great! Good luck!! :)
  • Our pediatrician told me to try them. I haven't seen much of an increase. I've been doing all the things that others posted as well and I am just now getting a half ounce from each side. I hope that it works for you (and me as well)!!

  • I take it, Brewers yeast, and blessed thistle. I can't say it helps. It definitely never helped with my first baby, but I was pumping at work for her and now I ebf. I think it helps some women but not all, but like pp said, it can't really hurt.
  • Make sure you are taking enough! My lactation consultant said people take it for various reasons so the dose on the bottle can be misleading. You should be taking 3 pills 3x per day. I noticed an increase. I have to admit I never remember to take that much but I try!
  • Its working in you if you start to smell like maple syrup. It gave my baby horrible gas so I stopped taking it
  • I take fenugreek and blessed thistle 3 times a day. My milk took a little longer to come in and my midwife suggested it. I noticed the next day that she would become milk drunk and that didn't happen until I started taking the supplements. I also drink mothers milk tea 2 or 3 times a day. It's definitely worth a try!
  • Personally it didn't work for me I still only get an ounce or a little more each time I pump. I have a Dr appt on Saturday and will be asking about the prescription option to see if that helps.

Oh no!! I'm already having gassy baby issues....I'll feel terrible if this makes it worse.thanks for the heads up.
  • @pinkstarr6 where do you buy the mothers milk tea? I have read it a few times on here but didn't ask?! I hope I have good luck, too!
  • One capsule daily won't do it. You need to take enough that you smell like maple syrup. It was s godsend with my first daughter. We had no adverse effects.

  • I bought mother's milk tea at baby's r us along with lactation cookies
  • I found mother's milk tea at Target today.

I don't know if you tried this yet, but I was given some UpSpring Milk Flow samples to try (and review) and my supply JUMPED when I was using them! (The Chocolate one tastes really good too)
  • I use a shatavari tincture made by Mother's Love. It tastes horrible, but it seems to be making a difference. I think there is a mother's milk tea that also has this ingredient, but it supposedly works better when you don't drink 15 minutes before or after.

  • The LCs that run our local BF support group really warn against Fenugreek because of the GI side effects it can cause in babies.
