VBAC-ers

OB won't let me go past my due date for a VBAC.  Is this typical?  Would you make a fuss or try to find another practice?  For the record, I've already had a successful VBAC.  My other pregnancies didn't make it to my due date but I know that doesn't mean anything!

Re: VBAC-ers

  • I'm not surprised to hear that, but especially with already having a previous successful VBAC I don't see how it could be warranted. What is your OB's reasoning?

If if you are really wanting another VBAC I would recommend finding a new VBAC friendly OB as soon as possible. Even if your current OB changed his mind, I would be hesitant that he would be much of an advocate for you as your delivery draws near

  • The reasoning was that "nothing good happens after 40 weeks."  LOL

  • you definitely need a new OB if can't provide you with a more legitimate medical reason that. A due date is an estimation and should not be held rigidly without a legitimate medical concern. @KSimone619

    I agree with this.

  • I have not had a VBAC but I agree with pp. It doesn't sound like your OB is very VBAC friendly and your due date doesn't mean anything other than a guess. If it's important to you, I'd start looking for a new OB. The other thing to remember (not that it's something you want to worry about when you are 40 weeks pregnant) is that they can't force anything. They can tell you they won't deliver your baby and then you are stuck with some random doctor on call at the hospital when you do go in to labor but if you are in the office on your due date and they suggest scheduling a c section or induction, you don't have to agree. Do you have any ICAN chapters in your area? They may be able to help find a supportive OB or arm you with some additional information.

  • My OB mentioned today that because I had a successful vaginal delivery with my 1st child prior to my C-section, I should be fine for a VBAC, but he did mention that if I went past my due date (with a hard cervix and clues "my body wasn't ready") we would schedule a C-section, but that made sense to me becuase he had some reasoning behind it.
  • My OB was comfortable letting me go to 41weeks but I know some will allow up to 42weeks. My 3rd was my first VBA2C and he came a day after his due date and was only 6lb 11oz. I shudder when I think about how small he would have been if I was induced at 38weeks.

I agree with others, I'd look for a new OB. Even I'd he relents and says OK 41weeks he could change his mind on you at 40weeks when he knows you're stuck and unable to switch then.

  • I want to just say, it is never too late to switch providers. It's not easy or convenient when you are 40 weeks but you can still do it if you are not comfortable with something you are hearing. Other providers may not be readily available to see you but the hospital is not going to not deliver your baby because you don't have a designated provider, you just may not be happy with who you get stuck with. Definitely better to switch now or before 40 weeks but it's never too late.

  • Thank you all, I may consider switching.  My practice does not support VBACs in general and will only allow mine bc of the circumstances.  All around I don't feel supported though.

  • Interesting. I had one c-section and planning on VBAC. I've never heard of this and I will be asking my OB on her policy now!
  • My OB is inducing but only because I have diabetes and she doesn't want baby getting too big for a VBAC. This will be my first attempt but I had my twins 14 years ago so there isn't a huge chance of rupture. Otherwise she said they would just let me go into labor naturally. I go through Mayo clinic but I don't know if that is an option for you. They encourage VBAC because it is usually healthier for all involved. Hope you can find some support where you are!
