Anyone else planning to give Almond/Coconut milk instead?

Curious to hear your plan!

My daughter is sensitive to dairy so we're avoiding cow's milk altogether. She seems fine with cheese/yogurt so she gets some calcium that way and we'll supplement the rest and other necessaries (fat, protein) through solids.

That's all I've got. I haven't thought through another logistics yet.

  • We are going to do almond milk but also some organic whole cows milk. DS is a skinny dude and our ped wants to make sure he gets fattened up with the whole milk. He was 18.4 lbs at his 9mos appt, and like 18% for weight. I'm hoping to at least be 20+ at his 1 year. But once he's Fatter I plan to drop the cows milk completely.

  • We will. We are pretty much a dairy free household due to allergies. He will get both almond milk or coconut milk. I cook with those as well.
  • We will! She will be dairy free. I have found some great vegan cheese, ice cream and  yogurt  made with coconut milk ;)
  • We wil be. I plan to start with almond milk first and then coconut. His allergist doesn't want us to introduce cows milk until the age of two
  • I'm planning on continuing to BF but when the time comes, I'm going to heavily consider enriched rice milk - it seems to have less sugar than almond/coconut milk but has more fat content.
  • We're doing hemp milk! My LO is allergic to almonds. I never thought of coconut milk before though. That's a great idea!
  • We're doing Soy and Almond. LO has been sensitive to milk since day 1, so we did soy formula and are now doing soy milk. I don't drink milk, so it's not a change :) and she only eats real foods and meats so shes getting all her nutrition. The milk is more of a comfort to her at bed time, and her pick me up in the morning.
  • Great question. My DH has lactose free milk, and I use organic almond vanilla milk in place of any milk I need(Paleo). I didn't even think about this. I'll have to bring it up at his next visit to get a plan.
  • Over here in uk we are told not to give kids under 5 rice milk due to there being higher levels of arsenic in rice drinks. This is exactly what it says...Children under five shouldn't have rice drinks as they may contain unsafe levels of arsenic. Arsenic is found naturally in the environment and can find its way into our food and water. Rice tends to take up more arsenic than other grains.

Don't worry if your child has already had rice drinks. There's no immediate risk to them, and there are unlikely to be any long-term harmful effects. But to avoid the possibility of them taking in any more arsenic, it's best to switch to a different kind of milk.
