Labor playlist?

I'm a FTM but when I think about delivery day, I keep thinking of music playing. I listen to music all the time (even during the school day at work there is always low music on) and it calms me when I'm nervous so I'm hoping I can have some kind of music on even if it's headphones in one ear up until delivery. I'm a huge Pink fan and would mix other stuff in there as well. Basically, my question is, what do you think might help calm you (or did help calm you) during labor? If it's music, what's on your list?

  • Ooooh following this thread! I was just thinking about this the other day and what would calm me down/make me happy during labor. I had my padora on 90's girl rock and I was thinking that could work because it's nostalgic for me... poor DH lol, he'll feel like he's at lilith fair. But hey, if it works!

...I think the search continues though!

  • Yes to all things Queen and SnP! @anna.oskar
  • Honestly, I think by the time I was laboring at the hospital I was so just in the zone, in my own head, that I wouldn't have even noticed if there was music playing...

My friend mad a playlist but said she was also just so focused on pushing she didn't even notice it wasn't on later.
  • Hubby and I are asking a Playlist! It's basically all of our favs and songs that remind us of baby

I had a playlist of my favorite bands (mostly The Beatles/Paul McCartney and The Airborne Toxic Event). I did chill songs - not She Loves You or Helter Skelter or anything.

We brought our mini Bose speaker and I had the music on quietly in the background. During the pushing phase, the doctor delivering DS said, "This is the best labor playlist I've ever listened to!" lol

I also had headphones at times, because I had Hypnobirthing relaxation recordings to listen to.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking of this though! I don't know what the rules are at the hospital so I'm going to ask my dr because I though signing up three months in advance would get me a labor and delivery tour but now that I'm more than likely getting induced, there are no more dates open for us to attend!

  • I want to make one too! Bring Em Out by TI will definitely be on there.
  • This is going to make me sound like a weirdo, but just about every some on the Riverdance soundtrack was going when I was in L&D. I find even the upbeat instrumentals relaxing, so it worked for me.
  • I've actually been thinking about this a lot. I think I'm going to make two playlists- one calm and relaxing one with stuff like Bon Iver and Ray LaMontagne, and another one with kick-ass music like Beastie Boys and Led Zeppelin. That way I'll have options.

  • I don't think I'm going to bother making a playlist. I'm like 90% sure that I'll want absolute silence. I'm the kind of person who needs to focus without distraction to get through pain. I wish distraction worked for me! We are planning to bring a laptop with some movies/tv shows in case I'm feeling ok and we get super bored.

  • @F47 That's a name I haven't heard since 2008... is the Airborne Toxic Event still around and making music?

@Allythekid I wish. They had an album out in 2015, but it was a big departure from their older stuff. All electronic and didn't suit their sound.

Last I heard, the lead singer was in rehab. Such a shame, because they're so great. And put on such an amazing live show.

  • @F47 I hate when that happens =/ That seems to be a common plague in the indie community though unfortunately.
  • I don't really listen to music much - I mostly watch tv shows for background. So I'm wondering what show(s) I should be prepared for labor - what will I be in the mood for? I'll probably not really prepare anything though...

  • @RainMira9e this was/is me! I love music but at home I turn on the tv to serve as noise. When I had my dd, I was sooo bummed because nothing was on tv! I love Roseanne so for like 2 hours when that was on I was 'happy' but then we were stuck watching an undercover boss marathon and I was bored which made contractions worse (just because of not being distracted).

I am delivering at a different hospital and my husband took notice of the outputs the to had and the nurse who showed us around said that a lot of people will bring like ps3's so they can watch movies or shows. I am going to check if I can bring my chromecast and see if I can get some netflix going!
  • Great idea on the Netflix @maf9866! I'll have to see if DH can hook up our Roku
  • I'm definitely brining the iPad for Netflix. Especially for when I might not be able to sleep or something.

  • I'm thinking I'll stick to the TV or movies on my iPad. There's certain movies I have seen 100000 times that can just totally make me relax so them in the background will probably be all I have.

  • Put me down as a speshul snoflake who doesn't want music playing during L&D. If the wrong song comes on, it could totally stress me out. And the wrong song would be entirely dependent on my mood, and might be something I picked thinking I would like it. I know, I'm weird. I prefer silence when I'm trying to focus and concentrate, so we're going to nix the music.

Same, I LOVE music, but when it's go time I need to concentrate.
Unless somebody will volunteer to pay Enya to come sing to me...

  • @bnsmith85 im from Long Beach CA & i love my Sublime Pandora station ! <3<3<3 i always bring my laptop and play pandora
  • It is truly the best, other than maybe my Thumbprint @mommabear444
  • DH made a playlist for DD's L&D on is iPod. It played as we zoomed to the hospital (I arrived 9-10 cm and used the L&D room to push). Things in the car got a little intense.
I remember Ho Hey by the Lumineers and Oh How He loves Us David Crowder playing. 3 1/2 years later I cannot hear either without getting teary-eyed. Still love both of those songs. I honestly did not even think to have music playing in the actual room once I started pushing.
  • We're considering bringing some sort of game console, but also going to double check during our tour because I THINK we're able to use our amazon firestick or chromecast on the hospital TV which would be awesome.

  • I was actually going to work on a playlist tonight.... just in case I want one in the moment... and then realized Pandora and an existing playlist would suffice. I work in a spa, so I have a redonk amount of spa music on my phone and Pandora has some good spa stations too. Easy peasy. Lol

Genius! I didn't even think of this. Next time we're there I'm checking the TV imports.

With DD1 I brought our laptop and all three of the Lord of the Rings movies (extended editions of course). We didn't even get the lappy out of the bag, lol. I ended up liking the quiet so I could focus on myself.

  • Two things I plan to work on this weekend while it's too hot for anything is the hospital bag and the playlist ... I bet I get nothing done lol

  • I can't help but think if I had a labor playlist I would like a lot of my gym songs on it and one of them is Britney Spears Stronger lol! Don't ask me why but it always pumps me up! I feel like I would need high energy pump up music.

but for my c section I feel like I need something more calming!
  • @serenaxo84 can you play music during a csection?
    DS born 2016
  • @mrsb627 I am sure you could! I don't remember any music during my first c section- but I know there was something playing. My sister remembers Bob Marley playing with her second! I am sure you could ask your OB!
