What did you have to avoid this wknd? Sushi, Beer, Wine, waterskiing...

I thought this would be a fun thread of what you had to avoid this wknd or recently since being pregnant. DH and I are telling no one until we are 12 weeks and I just found I was pregnant last Sun., 7/24.

This weekend visited his aunt and uncle at their lakehouse, DH went on training bike ride so I spent time with his aunt during the day but here are some things I avoided this weekend. I've only met them a handful of times and they're super nice but try to be go with flow when I don't know people.
  • Wineries - she brought a booklet of wineries with us but fortunately we just shopped
  • Sushi - she suggested light lunch of sushi FORTUNATELY she kind of let me choose so I chose a cooked one. BUMMER it was 1 roll we split and I was till hungry
  • Feta Cheese  - she was making this recipe that had Feta cheese which I thought was a cheese to avoid BUT this was pasteurized and it was cooked in a recipe
  • Beer/Wine - was offered this a couple times but fortunately they're not huge drinkers (unlike DH's immediate fam who always are having beer/wine as soon as I get to the house)
  • Waterskiing - DH's uncle suggested water skiing a couple times. I look it up and it said not best idea because of abdominal trauma. I mean if I were a regular water skier then I'd go for it but I have not waterskied in 15 years so umm not.
There were also long lulls between some meals and late breakfasts which was no bueno. Next time we go (2 weeks) I will bring more snacks.

DH and I did have a good giggle on everything that I encountered though

Re: What did you have to avoid this wknd? Sushi, Beer, Wine, waterskiing...

  • @WkoutMomtoBe definitely struggling with the wine here! I've had a couple of outings and felt like my antibiotic excuses were so lame!

Besides the wine, I accidentally ate Gorgonzola cheese this weekend. It didn't dawn on me until after I finished it, of course. Then I googled it and convinced myself I was going to get sick.

In a few weeks, I'll be going to a lake house with coworkers where we ride jet skis and go out in a boat. I haven't thought of any good excuses yet..

  • Yes to this thread!! I was on vacation in Maine this past week with another couple who are our best friends. We actually wound up telling them ( and are sworn to secrecy) because we are all HUGELY into craft beer and there was no way we would get through a week of me not drinking beer in Maine and them not knowing. So until 12 weeks they will be the only people who know haha.

Craft Beer - We went to 7 breweries - I was DD for all of it haha. A few coworkers and I go to a local brewery every Thursday for happy hour and I am trying to think of excuses for the next 6 weeks - suggestions are welcome!

Deli Meat - sandwiches were packed for a bunch of the hikes and I had to have cheese sandwiches lol

Lobster - I definitely indulged in some lobster - but they pretty much ate it every single day, but I did not want to consume so much out of mercury fears

@GG620 - for the coworkers/happy hour, could you say you're watching your weight and say you're going to gym? Do you have a dog, say dog training classes? Or any type of class (pottery, etc) that you're taking and that was only day so you need to go to class or rush home to have din and go to class?
  • We had a birthday party yesterday.  I didn't really have to avoid anything except trying to hide how upset my stomach was after we ate.  And then try not to laugh when my MIL said that she was proud of DS 2 potty training and how DH and I wouldn't know how to be without having to buy diapers....yeah for 9 months...lol.

We do have another birthday party with my family next weekend and that one will be harder.  I know there will be alcohol there.

In general I have been trying to avoid lunch meat...and of course I'm craving subway right now.

Also trying to avoid my energy drinks when I work.  I work night shift and cannot even handle the smell let alone taste of coffee.  Its a struggle some nights!

  • @GG620 Oooh, where in Maine?? I'm from Maine, and we will be moving back up in Feb! Don't worry too much about the lobster. It's unlikely to be that high in mercury, and it was only one weekend. Now, if you were having like 3 rolls and a couple steamed 2 -pounders a week, it might be different. As well as crazy expensive  ;) DD and I are flying up in September for a week, and I'm already dreaming about all the lobster I'm going to eat.

@WkoutMomtoBe O0o the dog training class is a fantastic idea!! I never thought of that and might just be stealing it - thanks!

@blueberry85 hooray Maine!! We were staying in Spruce Head. We loved it up there so much, I am sad to be back in Jersey now ha. Got a full 8 days and I would say perhaps 3 lobster rolls and perhaps 3 nights of twin lobster dinners? Not too much right? haha. It was DELICIOUS...now I am sitting here hungry even though I just hate   I wish you best of luck on your move! Where will you be moving to?

It wasn't too taxing this weekend.  We went out for drinks with friends Saturday night; I asked the bartender for club soda and lime and he gave it to me in a pint glass, so it didn't look like a mixed drink at all.  :(  So the next round I got a vodka cranberry (minus the vodka) and that looked a whole lot more drink-ier!

I just have a hard time lying to people about this stuff.  I'm horrible at it!

Edit: forgot that I've cut waaaaay back on coffee (1 cup half-caf per day now) and that makes me grumpy at times.

  • I had a low key weekend, so the only thing I really missed was drinking massive amounts of coffee per usual. All my friends will know the instant I decline a whiskey, though, so I think I'm just going to roll with telling people early this go around.

I love Maine and I really want lobster and craft beer now!

  • We've had friends come over for a beer twice since Friday.  I pour peach flavored carbonated water with a splash of orange juice into an empty Stiegl Radler glass bottle.  Looks just like it and vaguely tastes like it if somebody were to take a swig.

  • Ha! Ok, so I haven't avoided too much yet (besides the obvious caffeine/alcohol), so your posts about deli meat, cheeses, etc make me nervous so I'll be googling "foods to avoid" shortly!!!

We had friends over last night to grill out, and I drank Reed's Ginger Beer in a koozie that covered the label. I thought it was so obvious, but they started asking when we're going to start trying for babies, so they were either playing it cool and trying to get us to spill, or they really didn't notice!

@TheJerilu I LOVE your idea about using an actual bottle, I'll be stealing this technique!

  • This weekend was easy to stay under the radar. I had to skip out on the beer at the ball game, but I played it off as I was dehydrated and too hot.

  • @missbriarbee Talk to your doctor and do your own research obviously, but soft cheeses should be fine as long as they're pasteurized and deli meat if it's heated up ("to steaming").  Even then, the concern isn't for the substance itself, like alcohol, but instead for listeria.

  • I didn't really have to avoid anything this weekend. I eat basically everything I ate before, except alcohol. Next weekend, though, we will be at a friends house for Thanksgiving in August and there's no way I'll be able to not drink without them noticing as they pour/mix our drinks and it would be super out of character for me to not drink. So we just buckled and told them and they'll help by mixing me drinks and skipping the booze and no one else will know. Haha

  • Also, most soft cheeses you eat in a restaurant or in some prepared food will be pasteurized (like the feta in Panera salads, for example). In a high-end place the cheese might not be pasteurized, but at your typically chain or grocery store salad bar you should be fine.

  • We had a wedding this weekend.  Luckily DH would go to the bar and get me a "vodka" lemonade.  Did end up telling one of my best friends though, as the bride started trying to get me to do shots and drink her mixed drink.  BF swooped in to save the day many times!

  • @GG620 I'm pretty sure it's a requirement to eat as much lobster as possible when in Maine  ;) Definitely don't worry. We'll be moving to southern Maine, probably greater Portland area. Midcoast/Downeast is gorgeous, but it's a bit too far removed from what little civilization Maine has to offer. I'm allowed to say that as a Mainer!

@clickclackmoo Maine really is great. Though, if anyone had told 17-year-old me I'd not just be willing, but desperate to move back one day, I would have laughed and laughed and told them to lay off the pipe.

  • not too much, as I work weekends. but I will be missing drinking an entire pot of coffee daily...

always allowed myself 1 XL/L cup of Tim Hortons or Starbucks once a day but as a nurse and mother of 3 coffee is a given. I also drank diet pepsi (gasp!) because I didn't have any coffee today

not a fan of deli meat and I only like the "cooked" sushi anyways

my biggest thing is craft beer. I'm already missing it and in 250 days I will be having a cold one.
@GG620 I feel you. we are "hop heads" in this house

Holy smokes, I feel you on the craft beer.  I'm one of those folks who genuinely drinks it for the flavor, not the alcohol (although that is a bonus).  Partner and I have already established that I will have sips to taste any particularly delicious beers of his as the months go on, even though he loves amber ales and I love stouts and porters.

  • So maybe this counts as my first unpopular opinion...I don't avoid any particular food when pregnant that I would otherwise eat, except wine (boo). Although if DH is having a NZ sauv I'll still ask him for a sip.

  • Now I really want lobster....The only things I've had to avoid this weekend were hot dogs (we usually grab a Costco hot dog as a quick cheap lunch when we shop) and WARNING, DISGUSTING, not food!!...cat poop cleanup. I'm not too sad to miss out on that one. Sorry DH, thanks for taking it for the team for the next 8 months.
  • @lovelongdog06

That's funny about the cat poop and I know the danger. We have a dog and we have to pick up before we mow but not danger. Nothing has grossed me out but when it does I'm out. Ha.

P.S. I thought I had to avoid hot dogs too but what I readit just uncooked/unheated

  • Other than unpasturized milk and excessive alcohol/caffeine, i'm not a big believer of restrictions.  That being said, a mosquito landed on me today and I freaked out, thinking about Zika.  I am definitely avoiding mosquitos!
  • @WkoutMomtoBe I'm sure I will eat many hot dogs over the course of this pregnancy. I'm just being abundantly cautious for the first few weeks!
