8 hr car ride?

Good morning!!

So DH and I are considering making one last trip up to our cabin in NY over Labor Day weekend with my family. I'll be 36 weeks along at that point (1st pg) and I know it isn't recommended to travel for that long or that far away from home so close to my due date, but we are only slightly entertaining the idea of the trip at this point, really. The trip is usually 8 hours with traffic and gas/potty stops, and we would be up there for 3, maybe 4 days. My question is to mommies that may have done a long distance car trip like that late into their pregnancies in the past- what would your advice be to someone considering a long distance trip? Would you do a long trip again after experiencing your first? I know we would need to stop more frequently than we normally would to get out and stretch, and there is a hospital within 20 minutes of our cabin just in case anything happened while we were gone, and we would absolutely not go if my OB said that anything looked slightly questionable at my appt the day before we'd be leaving. Just looking for anyone else that may have done something like this with a past pregnancy
Thanks!!

Re: 8 hr car ride?

  • I traveled about 3 hours away when I was 36 weeks last time. I was miserably uncomfortable. The car ride was awful, and I barely slept because the bed was so uncomfortable. This time I don't plan on going anywhere out of town during the last month. I also went to a concert two hours away when I was 37/38 weeks and it was not fun.

It's really up to you if you feel like you'll be comfortable enough and your doc gives you the okay. 8 hours in the car sounds like my personal hell right now.

  • Definitely get your dr's input first, but that's a long time in a car all cramped up.  We did a 10 hour drive from PA to NC when I was 7 months pregnant with DS and it was a long trip!   I can't imagine doing that drive now.  Heck I can't even stand doing the hour drive to work 1 day a week right now.

  • Ditto the doc's advise is best.
I just did a 10 hour with stops drive a week ago (31 weeks).  I was not comfortable but not too bad.  BUT the next couple days I was incredibly sore and my hip killed just about to the point of tears.  We stopped a lot for bathroom breaks but I never pushed myself to walk each time.
  • Also, remember that your normal 8 hours with traffic/gas/potty will probably go up since you'll probably need to stop to pee more often!

  • That sounds miserably uncomfortable, but if you're up to it, I say go for it!

  • Ditto ask your doctor - also, although not likely, you could be going into labor at that point. Are you comfortable potentially finding a hospital that far away from home/ family and driving 8 hours home with a newborn while in pain from recovery? Something to consider.
  • Thank you, ladies!! If it were to go anywhere but the cabin (which is more lake house with all of the creature comforts, less roughing-it sparse cabin) I wouldn't even entertain the idea just in case anything did happen while we were there, but both of my sisters have littles and so we have a lot of the essentials at the cabin already so its less to pack whenever we go up (feeding items, pack n play, bouncer, swing, etc) just in case she did decide to arrive while we are there and we ended up having to spend more time up there than we planned for and we know exactly where the hospital is. We did the drive last month when I was 27 weeks and it wasn't bad at all at that point so I figured I'd fish for opinions re: doing it later on in pg  We usually make this trip 3 or 4 times a year between Memorial Day and Columbus Day so the time in the car doesn't really bother me, but I def want to make sure that it is safe for me/baby if we decided to do it now. I hope all of you beautiful mamas are having a wonderful day!!

  • Oh another thing to consider is if the county/town will mail you a birth certificate. (The town where I delivered in NY mailed it.) Some places require you pick it up in person. You do not want to have to drive back in a month for a damn piece of paper. Just look into it.

I went 5 hours at 31ish weeks. I was miserable. I would say if you are going to do it just make sure you drink lots of water and stop often to walk around.
  • I just couldn't do it.  Would be way too uncomfortable and feel that the risk is not worth it. Plus My doctor doesn't want me more than an hour away after 34 weeks. It does sound like a very relaxing cabin so I understand why you'd want to though! Good luck with whatever you decide.
  • If you can be comfortable in the car, I would go and take the time to enjoy the weekend baby-free. As long as you're not high risk and are aware of where the closest hospital is, Etc.
  • I just got back from a 12 hour car ride (not counting stops) on Thursday. We'd booked our summer vacation before we found out that my due date was off by a month. I had no problems and would do it again. I took a copy of my prenatal record just in case and my favorite pillows/blanket for the car ride. DH did all the driving and it wasn't bad at all!
