Hiding veggies in LO's food

Anyone else have to hide vegetables in their kids meals? I'm telling you, this is payback for my picky eating habits as a child! How are you doing it?

Ive been adding puréed cauliflower to his scrambled egg in the morning and mashed potatoes at night. I shave down carrots very fine into his Mac n cheese. Tonight I shaved down broccoli into his mashed potatoes and he seemed skeptical at first but plowed through them. I'm going to try sweet potato pancakes next but I would love to hear your suggestions!

LO has such a texture issue that he will only eat ground meat if it's mixed in something (hence the mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes).

Re: Hiding veggies in LO's food

  • it seems like when I try to give LO something healthy like scrambled eggs or soup with vegetable he only takes little bites and he's ready to call it quits. but sure if it was French fries or pizza he can't stop eating. uggghhhh

  • Lol mine loves potatoes and actually realized this weekend cucumbers so I'll be feeding those more often. He is being kinda picky like stuff he used to eat now he won't :( like he is super weird about pasta lately.
  • DD won't let me spoon feed her anymore, and I don't have the stamina at the end of the day to let her try to feed herself things like mashed potatoes or mac n cheese, so you are my hero.

DD is absolutely obsessed with steamed veggies though, so I have that going for me.  She will take down adult servings of steamed green beans or broccoli, any time they are fed to her.  It is ridiculous.  I do wish I could feed her mac n cheese or mashed potatoes though!  She's iffy about eggs as well, and toast.  And she will gladly eat banana bread off of my plate, but ignores it when it is on hers.  Seriously.

Speaking of banana bread though...have you tried making something like zucchini bread?  That's a good way to hide veggies.  Or making spaghetti squash instead of using actual pasta noodles.  Or pureeing veggies into a sauce for pasta.  These are all things I used to do to try to fool DH into eating veggies.  haha. :-)

  • I have the opposite issue. Give my girls fruits and veggies and they're happy as clams. I think they would live off green beans given the opportunity, but I can't seem to get a lot of protein in them. They don't care for meats or eggs. I tried to give them cheese chunks too, but they hated those. They really only eat peanut butter so I'm at a loss there...
  • I make a spaghetti sauce that is kind of chunky and has lots of flavor. It's really easy to sneak things like meat, other veggies or noodles into. Our kid hated noodles for the longest time but would eat anything if coated with that stuff.

Was easier with purees, but it's been tough to get finger food past him, as he's pretty good at picking out the undesirable part of a bite.
He does love fruit, so we add spinach to smoothies. Spinach is also easy to add to eggs, without having to cook separately.
Peanut butter is a main source of protein here, too :)

He settles her in her home as a happy mother of children, praise the Lord! (Psalms 113:9)

  • Summer time is great for creaming veggies like peas or lima beans. L/o likes veggies cause I eat them so she wants them but she went after them when I creamed them. I know not super healthy but hey they need the dairy too.
I once read something that said whatever you eat while pregnant your baby will love so that may have something to do with it. I ate everything and lo is definitely not picky.
  • That can't be true this mom doesn't eat fruit and it's my babies favorite
  • LO is completely obsessed with food. She practically eats anything and everything in sight!
  • I've been giving my kids smoothies, they love them and it's a great way to hide vegetables
  • @Emilywooddesign thanks for saying that!  I've been meaning to try smoothies with LO to try to get him to drink some almond milk for the calcium. If i feel like he hasn't gotten enough solid fruits and veggies, i will give him a pouch or 2 of purees a day.
