Mamas at work!

Curious as to what careers we have going on here! Do you love it? Hate it?  Are you scared to tell your employers? Are they going to be supportive or no?

I made the decision to not go back to work after my (year long - Canadian here) mat leave recently but I've been trying to get some work from home stuff going on. I sew and I'm starting some graphic design stuff. I was a financial advisor prior, and chose not to go back because I HATE my job and had a really rough pregnancy with DS so I felt it would be unfair to all for me to go back and be pregnant already, etc etc.

Re: Mamas at work!

  • I was the office manager of a fundraising/events services company for 9 years, fresh out of college, when I got pregnant with my first in 2014. When he was born prematurely in Feb 2015, my boss was very understanding and I would go in a few days a week for a couple hours before heading to the NICU to be with him. I took all summer off when he was discharged and now work 1-2 days a week as it was advised that our son not go into daycare. I also try to do some work from home - actively looking and do some light online work just to try and build up a bit of income. This BFP was a total surprise so I'll probably work my 1-2 days until the end and then most likely not return.

  • I'm a lawyer with a federal agency. I really like what I do! I'm a bit scared to tell my employer because I only started there last November. But I anticipate that they will ultimately be supportive. What I'm most nervous about is a shorter maternity leave. I was at a corporate law firm when I had my son, and they let me take 6 months. It was the perfect amount of time. I'm not sure the options available for me here beyond the standard FMLA 12 weeks.

  • I am a Labor and Delivery RN.  I will take 12 weeks off...definitely wish we got more!  I am not afraid in the sense they won't be supportive.  I'm just afraid to tell anyone.

I know they will all be super happy for me especially after my miscarriage in April.  I had a really hard time at work for a while afterwards.

I became full time charge when I came back from maternity leave the second time around. I plan on working until the end with this pregnancy, barring any complications.

    July Siggy Challenge: Summer Fail

  • I am an estimator that does costing and pricing for a commercial printer (think lots of math) and I really enjoy my positon. I will get 6w paid or 8w with c-section. I most likely will save the money to take the whole 12 weeks though. I was hired with the flexibility to work 2 days from home, so I will be taking advantage of that when I return to work to cut down on child care costs.

  • Right now I am just going to school full time (I graduate in October) but my career is domestic violence and sexual assault victim advocate. I don't plan on going back to work for a while though, probably not until this squish is a year or so.

  • I love the variety in all these careers already.

I'm a program manager at a health related non-profit. I don't exactly LOVE it, and there's more travel than I expected. However, the salary and benefits are nice and they're totally flexible about working from home when I need to. I'm confused about what I'd really like to do otherwise. Think I'm going to see a life/career coach after this new baby is born.

  • This is a complicated one for me... let me think about how to summarize...

DH and I moved to Louisiana for him to work on a graduate degree; he will finish next May and we hope to move back to Texas (our home state) next June or July as our families and best job connections are all there (so if you have any experience moving with an infant, I'd love to hear from you haha!).  I had a hard time finding a full-time job in my career field when we moved (music therapy - I work with kiddos with developmental disabilities), so right now I work full-time outside my career (research coordinator at a university) and run a small music therapy practice on the side.  It all worked out for the best though because I'm very happy with my benefits!  ;)

I do like my full-time job, and I'm going to be super nervous to talk to them about this, but when it comes down to it I would've only stayed at that job a few months past my due date anyway.  I am not sure yet how many weeks of FMLA I will take, but I'm trying to bank as much paid leave as possible!

  • I work part time as an educational comsultant. I don't get any paid leave but my work is very flexible. I will probably take 3-4 months off after I finish with my clients next spring.

  • I am a video editor and I working a lot in action sports. Coincidentally, the company I work for is closing (owner is retiring) and so I will be going freelance in January. This is ok since I will be able to be very flexible with my work schedule. When my 5 year old was born I went freelance and it worked out great. I plan to not work at all for 12 weeks once the baby is born.

I work at a mid-sized private university for a center that works in schools/education. I get 8 weeks paid leave but will probably take 1 extra week of vacation and 1 week unpaid. DH gets 4 weeks paid, which is pretty great.

I'm not concerned about telling my employer, I think they'll be happy for me. We'll likely bring on a temp to take on my responsibilities. I'll probably have to train the person for 2 weeks before I go out.

I work in merchandising for an arts and crafts supply distributor. So I'm basically a buyer and work with vendors and on our proprietary brand. I just started last September and have been telling my boss that we want another child so I'm sure she's expecting it. I will get the full 12 but I'm hoping to get an extra month unpaid. I might ask to only go part time after.. We will see.

  • I'm a manager for customer support at a software company that specializes in K12 applications.  I've worked there for about 2.5 years now.  Our main office is a baby factory and my boss adores me, so I've no doubt that they'll be supportive when I have to take leave.  I think the policy at my work is 30 days standard sick leave + 1.5 weeks short term disability + 12 weeks maternity?  I know it's a bit more than the basic FMLA.  I'm going to see if I can't arrange a 1/2 work from home policy on my return.
Partner is a fundraiser at an NPO.  He's going to try to get partial WFH or perhaps become an independent consultant once I return as well.
Ideally, we'd like for him to be a SAHD, but that might be a convo we have once I'm on maternity and can see how we operate on one salary.

  • I'm a teacher, so the timing should work out pretty well where I won't have to go back until after summer vacation. I plan to take my paid leave, use sick days, and possibly unpaid leave. Seems easier than trying to find daycare for a couple of weeks. :)

  • I work very F/T as a Marketing Manager at a large internet retailer.  Tough environment (NYT-worthy) but we've made it work with the first kid.  Lucky to get 4-5 paid months off so I plan on taking every day of it then going back (either with partial ramp-up for full-time, TBD).  Husband will get 6 weeks paternity leave.
  • I'm a pharmacist for a grocery store chain and for the most part, I love it! My patients are wonderful, but it can be taxing at times, especially during my 12 hour days. We only get 6 weeks paid leave, but we're going to try to save money so I can use FMLA and stay home for 12. For our DD, my DH only got one week leave, hoping his new company is a little more generous.

  • I'm a financial planner, and while I took off 12 weeks for DS, I may only take 10 this time around. My company implemented a maternity leave policy AFTER I went on leave in 2014 (figures) but it requires you to return to work after 8 weeks. I'm planning on working out a deal where I work from home PT after the 8 weeks so the new little squish doesn't have to go into daycare until he/she is 10 weeks old.

I'm not really scared to tell my employer except for the fact that my co-worker (who is a good friend of mine) will probably be a little annoyed that I will be gone. Jokingly, of course. I still fear it though.

I have a feeling they will find me out soon anyway once the MS kicks into full swing. I've been able to keep it at bay, but my sense of smell and food aversions will probably get me noticed first.

I teach full time at a university, this will be my 2nd year. I am not tenure nor tenure track though I'm about to start a graduate program that will keep me teaching and allow me to keep teaching should they decide to hire me AND THEN go tenure track.

I'm VERY NERVOUS and AFRAID to tell my employer since I'm due in early April (well that's my estimated due date, will find out official due date at first ultrasound next week). I plan on telling my department chair this week, I'm super early but they already have my schedule for next semester that I signed (but it's able to be changed) and I want to give them as much notice as possible. I have NO CLUE how they handle someone having a baby in the middle of semester...I teach 4 classes, we are down 5 instructors, there is no one to cover this. I know this should not be my worry/concern but it is. Especially because I'm an alum of this university/dept and definitely had an in for this job...EEEK. Additionally, I'm elevated/high risk so I'm nervous of going early...

Additionally, I think only a couple of ladies in department have kids and they did that after they graduate grad school (though one got pregnant in grad school). I'm not sure perception of marriage, kids....academia and all. Also, it's a big shocker I'm changing my name (see below).

I just got married at the end of May and my thought was I want to plan my pregnancy for next May, June, etc. We chart and for June we avoided. In July, I was calculated wrong and thought it was 2 months back + add 7 days. Then when we BD 4 days before my ovulation I thought I was fine...nope, surprise.

It will all work out, they will be thrilled. BUT this is when I miss my previous job in private sector because it does not really matter time of year. THOUGH - no clue what they'd do without me (literally it took them 2 people to replace me and former coworkers say they miss me) and it was such high stress, I literally had chest pains. The job after that was like 6 people, so no FMLA, etc

This job teaching can be stressful but nothing like my previous job.
  • I work as a supervisor in local real estate tax collection (don't hate me! :) ). There are only 3 people including myself in our department and not going to lie I am a little nervous about training them to fill in for my specific duties while I'm on leave. Thankfully the girl who I took over for has said in the past if I ever have more kids she can come help fill in!

I know everyone in our building (especially the group across the hall - kind of a joint department. they are like a group of mother/grandmother figures to me!) will be very excited for me but I am VERY nervous to tell one of my immediate coworkers. She has had two miscarriages in the last 7 months and is currently seeing a specialist. She has told me whenever we've talked about kids that I don't need to be worried whenever I get pregnant again because she knows we want to expand our family and she would be happy for us no matter what but I still have anxiety about it.

  • @clickclackmoo I totally had you pegged for a teacher because of the name. It's a cute book!

I am going into my 12th year of teaching. 6 pre-k and this will be my 6th year teaching kindergarten. I love it and have never done anything else. I love it with a lot of cheese and sometimes it spills out into the world. Apologies in advance. I took a year off after having my son in March 2014 and will do the same for this one. It's hard to make it work financially, but I know it's possible.

  • I'm the GM of a vacation rental company due around Spring Break. This should be interesting. I LOVE my job and worked very hard to get to this position (that I've held for about four months). I anticipate a little panic from my big bosses because that's what happened at my last job when for a second they thought I wouldn't be back. Once I've reassured them enough that I will be back 6-8 weeks after the baby is born, I think they will be very happy for me.

  • I don't "count" on this post because I'm a SAHM... but dang it if I'm going to be a joiner I might as well reply to stuff. I'm very happy to not be an apartment manager this pregnancy or after! Last time I worked until I was 38 weeks and had him a week later. Thankless work that I'm happy to leave behind! DH is a high school band teacher and April is relatively good timing for us because it avoids me giving birth in the middle of his marching band season when I never see him.

Very rarely am I laying around. I WISH! It's gym, errands, cleaning, playing/walking dog, time to make dinner, etc,. While flexible if I have a lunch date with gf or appt it eats into my day of what I want to get done!

  • I work in marketing, and I'm going to hold off on telling my bosses until it becomes painfully obvious, because we've had a lot of turnover recently and it'll give them an ulcer.

Not trying to (omg, what's the word??? Hack? No. Steal? Maybe) take over this thread - maybe we need a fur babies thread!  I wanted to add, that one of my corgis, Leia, barked and howled every time the baby cried for several months after he was born!  Now, both Luke and Leia alert me when he wakes up from his nap (or stands on a chair, or jumps on the couch).  Little furry rule enforcers! :D

I do large event production, promotions and strategic development/marketing. I can do a lot remotely, and with a startup, I don't foresee taking much time off, rather doing enough to keep afloat while enjoying being a new mom!

  • @missbriarbee Not exactly the same, but I am a part-time business owner - I have a small therapy private practice (3 private clients and one facility) which I visit after my full-time job ends at 4:30.  To be honest, I have no idea how long I'll be able to keep it up while KU - I need the FT job for the benefits (and I do enjoy it), but the private practice is my passion and my career work.

I anticipate that we will be moving closer to friends and family after DH finishes up grad school next year, at which point I *hope* to build my private practice into my only job so that I have more flexibility.  It won't be easy but I think it'll be worth it! :)
