Plugged duct

Any tips for a stubborn plugged milk duct?

I have tried warm compresses, hot shower, breast massage, pumping like crazy... nothing is working on this thing and it's getting worse.

Anyone know of anything else that may help?

Re: Plugged duct

  • Wear super loose clothing too.
I had a plugged duct and now there's still a white hard dot on my nipple. It's super weird.

Use a warm compress and then rub/stroke from the plug inward towards the nipple many times, avoiding rubbing directly on top of the plugged duct. If you nurse, have baby nurse as much as possible on the affected side. Combine nursing/pumping with the stroking if possible. If it becomes painful use a cold pack in-between nursing/pumping sessions. Also, if this does not resolve in a couple days, do not let this turn into mastitis. • When baby is nursing, sometimes it helps to point their chin toward the plug. If all else fails, in the breastfeeding group I'm in one woman was mentioning recently that she had to get her husband to help to unclog her duct, and a bunch of others confessed that they had done the same thing

  • I've had a couple of plugged ducts and warm compresses before breastfeeding has always helped me. I soak a cloth in boiling water and put it on my breast before nursing. I make sure it's really hot but not hot enough to burn my skin. I also breastfeed with LO lying on his back with my breast hovering over him, nipple pointing down. This looks weird but it works.

I had several horribly plugged ducts in one breast a few weeks ago (that ended up resulting in mastitis) which took nearly a week to resolve. I did everything mentioned above (other than having DH help, though when I was desperate that certainly occurred to me) but the ultimate thing that ended up working for me was hanging over a bowl of very hot water and soaking my boob in it while massaging. I did this multiple times per day while massaging with a hard plastic massager, hand expressing, then pumping on high suction while continuing to massage.
  • Thanks so much for all the tips! Turns out my pump is dying and not draining me all the way. Had to go get a new one this evening. Hopefully I can get some relief now.
  • Sunflower Lecithin is supposed to help. I've not tried it though.

  • Sunflower lecithin totally works. I used to get bad clogs like every week and haven't had any since I started taking it amounts ago. One weird thing that helps get a stubborn clog out is: warm compress and then hold the butt of an electric toothbrush on clog for a minute before you nurse. Sounds ridiculous but it does the trick.
