How many appointments during stims?

Hello ladies,

As I obsessively study my upcoming calendar, I was wondering how many blood draws and ultrasounds did you have while on stims? Just wondering if it's pretty much even or all over the place.

It looks like I am scheduled for a baseline, then 3 during stims and then possible ER. That does not seem like much, but then again my appointments are an hour away so I would not want to go too often!

I began stims on a Friday. Blood draw and ultra the same day, then again the following mon, wed, fri, sat, mon, tues, ET on Wednesday!

Every place is different, but mine never wanted to go more than every other day without checking growth towards the end Hence the Saturday appt. The extra Tuesday appt before egg retrieval was to make sure the trigger worked (no ultrasound that day).

I had had a long drive too. And could not get my finger on the schedule at all! Good luck!
    Me: 41  DH: 44  DD: 9
    IVF: ER 7/16 40 follies, 23 eggs, 19 mature,
    12 fert w/icsi, 6 blasts, 3 PGS norm, 1 unknown.

    FET: 9/1/16 transferred 1 CP beta 5.9
    FET 2: 11/15/16 transferred 1 CP again!
    FET 3: TBD

  • I had 4 once I started injections, not including the ER. I was a bit slow to respond, though that is usual for me, so I expected extra appointments.

  • I had a baseline, started stims on a Monday 7/18, had my first ultrasound on Friday 7/22, another ultrasound on Monday 7/25, then another on Wednesday 7/27 and I was ready to trigger.  I had blood work at all of them to check estrogen levels except the one on 7/25 because my doctor said it wouldn't make a difference.  So I had a baseline and then 3 monitoring appointments total before my egg retrieval.  It really depends on how you respond to the meds though, so everyone is different!

I started stims last Thursday 7/21.  First monitoring appt was Monday 7/25, then every other day until this Sunday, 7/31.  I'll then go every day until my retrieval.  Right now my retrieval will probably be Wednesday 8/3. So that's a total of 6 monitoring  appts not including ER.

My clinic also does a pre op appt (I imagine that is the standard) for the ER and the ET.  They scheduled it right after one of my ultrasounds so I didn't have to make another trip.

  • @APM_SLP What was your pre-op appointment?  I don't believe I had one of those...

  • I think I had 5 appts before my retrieval with u/s and labs including my suppression check.  I also live 2.5 hours one way away from my RE....so patients closer may have been seen more often. :)
  • I had 5 as well. Started stims on a Friday, then appts M, W, F, Su, and M again. Triggered Mon night.
  • @wifeinraleigh28 it was a pretty quick appt.  they took vitals and medical history and asked about my experience with anesthesia.  Explained the procedures, times lines etc. and I asked any questions I had.

  • @APM_SLP They definitely did all those things at various times for me, but not in a specific appointment.  I guess all clinics are run differently!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 and @rmarble23 yes the appointment seemed quite redundant! Guess it's just a formality!

  • Thank you ladies for your replies. It is always interesting to hear everyone's experiences. I guess like with everything else IVF, it's different for everyone.

You should be prepared to have to go in daily, although you likely will not need to. I went in... Every three days I think and then closer to ovulation every single day. Blood draws and u/s each time. They want to watch for ohss and make sure they balance egg sizes vs count. Like a bunch if grapes, they can all be growing at different rates and be different sizes so the dr has to guess when is the best time for your retrieval. I had to lose two eggs because they grew too large too fast compared to the rest of the group.
  • Im on daily visits at the moment!

I have gone in 8x since July 15th, and will go in tomorrow morning again!!! Im so glad I picked a clinic close to work

  • Well, the cases differ. And we should remember about side meds effects as well which could cause a couple of unscheduled appointments. We used donor egg for IVF in Biotexcom. I saw my RE 3 times from the beginning to the end of taking meds. Also 2 phone calls when I had to make sure about the symptoms. Judging from the posts here our visits were quite few. :)
Wish you good luck with your treatment!
  • I think I have my baseline and then 3 US and BW appointments scheduled prior to ER. But that is just if I respond as expected to stims. It I am slower they will add additional appointments every other day closer to ER to check progress.
  • A lot just depends on how fast or slow you stim!
