Shaving legs

Has anyone experienced issues with leg hair growing fast and sensitive when shaving? I've had to change razors a few times because I keep getting razor burns and my legs look terrible.

Re: Shaving legs

  • Yes! I totally feel you. Lately, I haven't been caring and have been wearing a lot of pants. Haha.

Yup! I have used the same razors for probably 10 years or so, but I started having trouble with razor burns a few weeks ago.  I changed to a different razor that has an additional blade and also two strips of moisturizer, and so far it's worked better.

  • Yes! I also feel you. Not that I have been doing the best job at shaving my legs anyways, haha! My leg hair is growing back super fast (actually, all the hairs on my body are growing at freaky fast pace!!!!)

  • OMG yes! This week, a day or two after I shaved my legs were super itchy and bumpy and just irritated. At first I thought I had gotten into something, but no, it was from my hair growing back in I think. Maybe it's just growing back super fast so the follicle is all irritated?

  • I just eventually get to the point that u wear leggings all the time and forget about the legs. Come on cooler weathet
  • Wow!! I didn't think of this as a pregnancy thing, but I've totally been having problems that I didn't before! Razor burn, itching, etc.

I've been putting a coconut oil & tea tree oil combo on my legs after, then fragrance free lotion on my legs every day. Also, in the shower before shaving I use a firm skin brush on my legs to get rid of dry skin, and that's been helping. I also now shave every other shower instead of every shower (i shower ever other day). Still, though...i get some itching and razor burn, but these things have helped a lot.

Me too! My hair is definitely growing in faster, and while I haven't actually had razor burn, the past 2 times I've shaved my legs they've been miserably itchy for days afterwards. Last time was Sunday and I still feel like I want to rip my skin off. (Luckily my hair is on the lighter side so I can get away with letting it grow in a little. Maxi dresses also help right now.)

I've been trying to figure out if shaving/my razor is the culprit, or if it's the moisturizer I used afterwards, or something else. I've switched laundry detergent, started using a gentle soap in the shower, and have been moisturizing with coconut oil only. So far still really itchy, though it's not getting worse... And not sure how much longer I'll be able to hold off before shaving again.

@sweetyjenj that's good to know about the brush! I used to dry brush regularly and was going to try it again, but wasn't sure if it would just irritate my skin more. Will definitely try this now next time I shower.
  • I'm dealing with this too, I didn't even think it was pregnancy related.

Yep. And then the having to shave dries my legs out instantly.
  • I don't shave, I wax my legs. Which is nice because it lasts longer. But I will say I notice it stings more than before. Not awful, just more. I have not been diligent, let's just put it that way.
I've noticed the hair growing a little faster as well... luckily not thicker though! I have thick enough!
  • Now that you mention it, yes. I've been getting super itchy legs. In general, I've been itchy and rashy this pregnancy. When I shave, I moisturize with coconut oil, cetaphil, and cortisone which seems to help a little.
  • I've switched to stealing my husband's electric razor. Doesn't give as close a shave by a long shot, but it does the job appearance wise and doesn't irritate me nearly as much. My armpits on the other hand...they've been breaking out every time I shave regardless of the razor. But in FL, you can't get away for long without wearing a sleeveless and/or armpit revealing shirt. UGH.

@ThePax89 is Cortisone ok? I've read mixed things about topical steroids online and was planning to ask my midwife at my appointment on Tuesday. But I've come close to using it in the meantime just to get some relief from the itching.
  • Same!  Hair is growing so fast!  Weird thing is that it grew so slow during my first pregnancy
  • @KRB22 I don't actually know anything about cortisone's safety during pregnancy but I'm allergic to it and break out in hives if I try to use it so we keep benadryl cream on hand and it seems to work just as well and I'm assuming here but considering benadryl is safe during pregnancy I'd say the cream is probably a safe option
  • I haven't had the burn or itch issue but man o man my hair is growing fast - and in places I've never had hair too.  :|

@PaukMeKiande Right? I shave my legs like once a week during the summer and once a month in winter. My leg hair is light and thin and grows super slow. And I'm lazy, soooo....there's that, too.

  • I hate shaving but gotta.  I work out in capris and tank top.  I also take my son to the pool regularly.  I may not look like a model when sweating but I don't want to attract attention for the wrong reasons.  Hahaha.

I did go for WEEKS without shaving though when I was sooooo sick and couldn't bathe myself.  Each doctors appointment the doctor checked my ankles and I had 2 EKGs in that time period too (they put stickies on your legs too) and I felt a little crush of humility but brushed it off.  I was freaking sick, man!

  • I totally didn't put two and two together until this thread!! I'm actually experiencing this an ingrowns :/
  • @Knottie1443924966 I have a ton of ingrown hairs as well. It's crazy- I've been using exfoliating gloves every shower which seems to be helping a bit.
  • OMG, yes!  I feel like a sasquatch, lately.  I am a blond, so before pregnancy, I only needed to shave my lower legs every other day, my bikini area once every 5 days and my upper legs once every 3 days.  Since I have been pregnant, I have to shave my lower legs every day, my upper legs I can go no longer than two days before black hair starts growing in.  Before all this, my hair was always blond, except on my calves.  It's just too much work for me that I just stopped caring.  It does not help that I get so nauseous in the shower still. I like to keep my lukewarm showers at 7 minutes, at most, otherwise, I get sick. I think it's the motion of the water hitting me that nauseates me. Every time, I stay in the shower long enough to shave, I always go on a puking spree.  Good times.
  • I have been having a terrible time with this too! Razor burn soooo easily. I thought maybe it was just because I was going longer in between shaves. I went for a massage for my birthday a few weeks back and as I'm laying on the table and she starts working on my legs I think "oh god, when is the last time I shaved!?"
  • @cjs260 @ThePax89 I actually just shaved my legs for the first time this year because I'll be swimming tomorrow. My family's all Belgian/French so I was brought up only shaving for the special occasions like swimming and dress wearing.
