Infertility

Poor Embryo Development

Hi Everyone, I just finished up my First IVF Cycle and ended in a BFN. We started with 16 eggs, 13 mature, 9 fertilized. On Day 3, we had a few good 7-8 cell, a few 4-6 cell, around 9 total growing in the right direction. By Day 5, I had one 3.5AA and one Morula (a little behind Blast stage) to transfer. Ended up with None to Freeze.

My doctor has ordered genetic testing for me and DH and Autoimmune Panel, as well. I do not have PCOS or Endo and no MFI. Can anyone who has been through this offer any advice???

Re: Poor Embryo Development

  • I am in the same boat.  This is my first IVF FET transfer.  I had 4 failed IUI in the past.  We had 22 retrieved but are now down to 2 low grade blasts both are 2C grade.  We are having them PGS tested to see if either of them are viable.
    5 iui all bfn
    1st IVF 22 retrieved 14 fertilized 0 blast
    2nd IVF 16 retrieved 11 fertilized 5 blast

  • I'm in my 2ww from my first IVF. Started with 18, 12 mature, 8 fertilized, transferred one good day 5 blastocyst and nothing to freeze. I've already had the genetics testing and all good, my amh was good and I'm under 30. If this cycle results in a bfn I'm planning on having a sit down with my re to see why on earth we went from 18 to 1.

  • No insight or advice here. In our cycle we had 11 retrieved, 5 fertilized and all but 2 stopped growing on day 3. So my issue was more on the fertilization rate than down the road. All my RE had to say about it was that we just needed to try again with a different egg. I wasn't as optimistic about his approach so we decided to take at least 3 cycles off to do supplements and acupuncture so if we go back to do another IVF cycle in the fall we can hopefully have a higher fertilization rate.

@annebenton22 I suppose it's possible that your medication was too much and affected your eggs. You may also wasn't to try some supplements to improve egg quality. Acupuncture can also help. I'm sorry this happened and hope next time goes better.

  • @annebenton22- have you read the book "It Starts with the Egg"? I found it an easy read and they go through what works (and doesn't) to try to improve egg quality based on scientific research. As others have mentioned already, I also think acupuncture can help too. I am also trying a low carb/low sugar diet (which is discussed in the book too), that my acupuncturist believes helps with egg quality and quantity. Not sure I believe it 100%, but it can't hurt to eat healthy (especially with the 10 extra lbs that all the treatment and reduced exercise has given me :). Good luck and hope this next round is much better!
