wardrobe problems

Help! My maternity pants keep falling down and my regular pants are nowhere near fitting. I'm having a hard time emotionally not being able to feel good with what I'm wearing. How long does this awkward stage last? Do I just need to go out and get new pants? My only hesitation is that I might feel worse if I go shopping and can't find anything that fits. Suggestions?

Re: wardrobe problems

  • I think it's probably different for everyone- with my son it lasted maybe a month. But with this baby my gut is stubbornly refusing to budge and it seems like I might be wearing in-between pants for quite some time. Everyone's body type is totally different, but I have found that Old Navy's rock star jeans fit a wide variety of bodies, are super cheap, and they come in 3 different rises. The mid-rise one seems to do a good job of containing the pooch for me, so I bought 2 pairs the other day to get me through this period.

  • I've been in that boat for quite awhile. I ended up buying two pairs of pants in the next size up from my prepregnancy size. I have a small handful of shirts that fit, and am otherwise borrowing from my husband.

Buying new pants didn't bug me, but trying on shirts did because my stomach is still competing with my bust, where it never has before.
  • Thank you! I will check out old Navy
  • Yeah, I'm feeling down about clothes, too. I'm b/f, so in order to do it easily, I wear special nursing tops. But they are not cute imo (maybe I don't have the right ones) and I basically feel frumpy all the time.

  • I'm in the same boat... I don't need the maternity pants anymore, but I still have a tummy pooch and my regular pants are too tight. I have been working out 3 days a week and hoping this goes away soon, so I haven't bought any new nice/pricey pants yet. For now, I am pretty much living in stretchy workout type pants from Target and some baggy nylon capris from Costco in a little bit bigger size than I normally wear which were both cheap. I'm still on maternity leave, so I can get away with casual clothes for now. I'm hoping by the time I go back to work in 8 weeks ill be back to normal and my work pants will fit! Otherwise I guess I'll have to buy some stuff to get me through... Depressing, yes, but better to have pants that fit in a bigger size than have a huge muffin top and be uncomfortable all day.

Dressing around nursing is a huge pain. I've had better luck this time around with finding flowy tops that I can lift up, stretchy v-neck Ts and tanks I can pull down, and button down tunic-type shirts/ dresses that I can unbutton or unsnap for easy access. Everything was from Target or Old Navy, so very cheap and relatively cute too.  I have a girlfriend who is a fashion blogger, and I keep telling her she needs to do a series on nursing clothing- there's nothing helpful on the Internet and I know there are girls like us googling it every day.
  • I gained a little weight prepregnancy so it's definitely not coming off as quick as I'd like. Then when I lose, I lose in different areas and my body is just so different than prepregnancy. I had to buy new jeans but I figured it's temporary. I'm working on losing the weight and I'll get to where I want to be. It's will take time and won't be easy, but in the meantime I'll mostly wear maxi dresses!

I am nowhere close to my pre pregnancy jeans. I have about 18 lbs to lose yet and Even once I do that I'm not sure if I'll ever get back in my old jeans. I had to go shopping for new clothes and to my horror, it was many sizes above what I used to wear. Everyone is different but remember what you went through and why. It's for a good reason. Just takes time to get your old body back. Embrace it for what it is and look at it as a reason to go shopping. You'll reach your goal soon enough.
  • Yep totally have this problem. I'm 2 months postpartum and refuse to wear maternity clothes even though I still have 13 pounds to lose so my prepregnancy clothes don't fit. I have 5 weeks before I go back to work and I really hope I can fit into my old clothes by then because I really don't want to go shopping for "fat" clothes which is what I'm wearing now.
  • Buy new pants!! It feels so much better to just have pants that fit, even if they are a bigger size than you'd like them to be. I went straight for pants a few sizes bigger than I used to wear and I'm not looking back until my body changes - trying to squeeze into clothes that are too small is too depressing.

This.  I just bought myself pants and shorts two sizes bigger than pre-pregnancy and a bunch of nursing tops.  I feel better wearing real pants instead of yoga pants and such or constantly pulling up maternity pants.  Last time it me at least 6 months to start fitting into pre-pregnancy clothes, so I had no illusions this time.  It is what it is.  I gained this weight over 8 months and it's not going away in one month.

  • My favorite pants that I have bought PP are the Rockstar jeggings from Old Navy.  The waist is actually elastic, so no button, but not the maternity kind of elastic where the panel covers your entire belly.  They are SO comfortable and very flattering.

  • Yup I listened to @LadySamLady and bought a size or two up. Feels much better in normal clothes plus reminds me more that I need to cut down than the stretchy 'eat what you like' pants did!!!
