Pierce ears for bday

What are thoughts both pro and con of piercing a baby's ears? I seem to be the only one in my family that doesn't seem to think it's that big of a deal. I wanted to have it done before her first bday pics. But family thinks it should be done when he's a teenager and can choose to do it

I wouldn't do it if I had a baby girl. I'd let her choose like my mom did. When I was ready we went together and made a day of it. It was more special that way I think.

We will probably wait until she's 6 or so and can help take care of them and not mess with them.

He or she?

With DD I did it @ 2 months. It was no big deal. She cried for about 20 seconds & she was done. She didnt pull on them nothing. My mom pierced my ears as a baby. My grandma pierced her ears when she was a baby, & so on & so forth. I dont wear earrings all the time but its nice to have them pierced for when i do feel like wearing earrings. DD has had hers for almost 6 years & not once has she asked to get them taken out because shes had them since she was 2 months old.

& with my sons, DH wanted to get their ears pierced(he has his pierced) & i told him not until they were older & can decide because its a little different with boys.

Ultimately its your choice. Do what you feel you want to do. Later on if your LO doesnt want the earrings just take them out. Or wait its up to you.

I'm in the "her body, her choice" camp and my 3 year old still doesn't have hers pierced. When she is older and if she asks for it I will have them done by a professional piercer and we will make a special day of it. That's the best choice for our family but I have many friends who have pierced their infants ears and I couldn't care less what other people choose to do for their family. I would be prepared for some backlash if you choose to do it while she is young and it is not a commonly accepted practice for your extended family or culture (from your comments, it sounds like it's not). That said, she's your daughter so you and dad make whatever decision you want.

Same. I wouldn't, but that's because I really don't see the point of earrings on a baby. I had to wait until I was over ten and then it seemed like a big coming of age moment, which was actually pretty cool from my pov. Then I went crazy as a teen and pierced my own 7 more times, lol. With all things fashion though I guess I'm more of a "let them be a baby" first camp. There will be plenty of time for them to wear makeup and short skirts and earrings when they are older (not that you're planning on doing that as a baby, just an example). But it's really up to you, your family will get over it if they don't agree.

Her body, her choice is my motto. Piercing don't ever really "heal" either so if she chooses not to have earrings down the line she'll have little holes in her perfect little ears.

I think it's tempting bc it'd look adorable! But ultimately I'd say no.

Thanks everyone. I think I just want it done because I'm so tired of hearing how much she looks like her brother and dad. I feel bad, they are all twins for sure so I just wanted something girly for her. I guess it sounds selfish when I say it but I was coming from a nice place.

You can use girly accessories without piercing her ears. I'm in the 'her body, her choice' camp. I have 2 girls, and they will get them done when they ask. My 3.5yo hasn't asked yet. I was 7, and it was a very special outing with my mom and aunt, I remember feeling so grown up

I got my girls ears pierced when she was 5 months old. She only cried for a minute. They were easy to keep clean. I did recently have to switch to screw back earring since she started pulling her regular ones out. But I do get a lot of compliments on how cute they are.

We did them at 3 months but truthfully like people said about its ultimately your choice what do you for your daughter. For me it was more of custom on both sides that it's just done and no one questions it. I do live in an area now that is predominately white (I'm Hispanic) and there's only one other girl in our play group my daughters age who has them peitcec and most older girls don't either (under 4). I can tell some people thinks it's weird that we have them done on my daughter at such a young age, but I don't worry about it because that's our family tradition so I hold it dear to me.

I've been wanting to get Piper's ears pierced, but I haven't found a place that will do them. I don't want to take her to Claire's where likely a teenage employee with minimal training uses a piercing gun. I've heard of pediatrian's offices that do it, but mine doesn't. I've called 3 local tattoo/piercing parlors, and they don't do piercings for kids under 16 (with parental consent). So for now, we are waiting.

If you want to get your daughter's ears pierced - go for it. My only hesitation is her current age. My daughter (10.5mon) is constantly playing with her ears. I would worry that she would pull on the earrings, etc.

Do you have a piercing pagoda in your area? they'll do it once the baby has their 2 month shots. Thats the age i took DD.

If you wait, and she later wants to get them done, you can use it as motivation to get her to do something. I would have never learned to ride a bike if getting pierced ears wasn't the reward, haha!

But I think there's a positive to having them done when they are too little to remember. Just don't pin too many hopes on earrings making it clear to people she's a girl - some people call girls boys no matter what.

I didn't get mine pierced until I was 10. I remember girls at school had their ears pierced and I would constantly talk about it at home, begging my mom and dad to let me get it done. One day my mom told me we were going on a "secret voyage" and she took me to get them pierced, I was SO excited! We made a whole day about it, got my ears pierced, did some shopping, and had lunch together. It was a girls bonding day for sure! Clearly it was special to me as I still remember it today!

They wanted to make sure I was old enough to take responsibility. I remember getting home that day and my mom showing me how to clean and rotate the earrings, etc. They wanted to make sure I was old enough to care for them myself.

I have a little boy, but if I had a girl I would probably do it the same way my parents did. It was a memorable moment for me.

This was how it was for me, but I was 13 when I had it done.

I was ten too when I had mine done (my choice). The first time my mom took me I changed my mind and promptly puked all over Dayton's floor. The second time, she took me to a place where they did both of my ears at once and I did fine. I'm going to wait until DD decides for herself that she wants them pierced and is old enogh to take care of them. Right now she is fascinated by mine and keeps trying to touch them.

I'm not being snarky. Promise. But i just don't see the point of putting holes in your babies body for superficial reasons. People will still call her a boy cause people are dumb. I, no joke, had Mila dressed in all pink (and i think a headband), and an old lady called her a "he". Also, remember there is always chance of an infection. I would just wait.

I know! Two people today called my son a girl even though he was wearing all blue and gray. One woman said it was because of his hair - to be fair, he does have a lot of it, but it only goes a little over his ears. Still within the realm of normal for a boy! But apparently boys can only be bald haha!
