Infertility

New here!

Hi all!  I'm new here so I wanted to introduce myself.  DH and I got married in 2011.  My sister struggled with infertility for 2 years so I thought if I just charted, got off the pill early etc. that I wouldn't have the same problems.  How silly I was thinking that I had complete control over this.  I went off the pill a year before we started TTC and had very irregular and long cycles and started charting so I could figure out what was going on.  We started TTC 15 months ago and since then my cycles have become more regular.  Most are between 28-35 days.  I did take Vitex for 6 months so I'm not sure if that helped or they just regulated on their own.  We used OPKs and cervical mucus to time intercourse, used preseed and charted to confirm ovulation but month after month got BFNs.  Finally saw an RE in June.  He diagnosed me with PCOS based on ultrasound, acne and high AMH level.  Everything else for me and DH came back normal.  I've always heard that PCOS causes infertility due to not ovulating so I feel confused (and a bit hopeless) why I'm not getting pregnant if I am ovulating every month.  Set to do Letrozole/IUI cycle in August.  Excited to be a part of this community!

Re: New here!

  • Welcome!  I hope you have some success soon.  I was also diagnosed with PCOS as well after 2 years of fertility treatments (I started at a useless clinic).  As my specialist explained it to me, the primary issue with PCOS is not ovulating.  The secondary issue is egg quality with PCOS patients (we have the quantity vs quality issue).  I don't know if others with PCOS have been told the same, but that is what I was told.
  • Welcome  @Katkirch. Sorry you find yourself here. I too went off of bcp and had irregular periods for awhile.  Every once in awhile I had a positive opk, and on clomid I even showed a high enough progesterone on day 21 that my (uneducated) OB considered that ovulation.  It wasn't until I was diagnosed with PCOS (ultrasound, acne, mild hirsutism ) that I found out about how inaccurate those tests are.
I did letrozole and iui and my ovaries did great, we found out about a sperm issue though. So, I know my RE said the LH is naturally high in us, so the opk is useless unless right after hcg (trigger) to make me feel better !
The ultrasounds show great follicles but they cannot prove what happens to them after that last check and not sure if they ever actually did their thing.

Good luck and keep us updated!

  • @Elyse and @JESSABER0414. Thanks so much for your replies and the information. When I asked my doctor why I might not be getting pregnant if I'm ovulating, he just told me that he sees lots of people that ovulate regularly and aren't getting pregnant. I think I just like understanding why and how things work so your responses were super helpful!  Thanks! AF arrived today so I have an u/s and blood work on Monday and will hopefully start Lettozole on Monday! Both nervous and excited.

  • @Katkirch Sometimes it's also just getting the right egg! I ovulate every month also (based on OPK and BBT) but we have been unsuccessful for over 2 years of TTC. After a failed IVF, we feel a lot of the issue is now egg quality.

  • @leanneb82 you're still so young why do u think its egg quality, I'm a bit older (40) and thinking that is my issue, like maybe i have a tough shell (lining) and the sperm cant break through it.
@katkirch i too keep trying to find a reason and understand it and then want to be able to FIX it!! Just so frustrating thats its not as easy.  I keep telling my dr the same thing, i'm getting a regular period every month and have never been on BC...i never wanted to screw up my cycle for when i wanted to have a baby...well we see how well that plan is going.  All of the extra painful periods for nothing.  I have bad veins so BC was never a real option for me....

I have low AMH which yes is a problem but i just love always hearing that its my age.  I will always say whoever said 40 is the new 30 it wrong!!  Your biological clock does not agree and only a few lucky ones get to experience that.

    good luck to u!!
