Walking at 10 months!

Hi ladies, well at 10 months and 3 days, and 6 teeth later, our little chunk Jakey decided crawling was no more, and he walked 3 steps unaided! He now is up to around 8-12 steps before landing on his bottom. He stands, turns and walks all without falling! It's unbelievable to watch. He finds his balance, the arms come out in front of him, and he's off! He very seldom crawls now, and is into everything, loves to climb. (God help me, lol) It's great for loosing this baby weight though, haha. The pounds are literally falling off (YAY!). I also find it hilarious watching him walk over to his big bro, and try pull the earbuds off him when he's on his iPad.... Oh and the poor dog gets a ragging if she's in his path.

How's everyone else's little ones doing on the walking front?

My daughter only started crawling at about 10 months. She's now pulling up on furniture and crusing. No unaided steps though (11 months now). I think she'll be past the year mark when she actually starts walking.

She's making up for it on the verbal front though. She's learning new words all the time it's amazing.

  • @yellow1daisy enjoy the peace for now lol! It's rather chaotic now, despite baby proofing the house. Soon we'll just end up with the tv's in the room. The cable gets switched off, plant gets eaten, sound bar nearly pulled off the tv unit, logs get munched on from the fire..... I could go on.

Ahhh, the first words. Lovely! The sweetest sound hearing your baba's first words. What does she say?
Jakey started quite early just saying mum mum mum, then dada. Now, he's stopped! I have no idea now what he's babbling on about, lol. Although I could have sworn I heard him say 'Fuckin whatever' the other day!
  • Yay! Congrats!  We've got a walker here too...he started about a week ago and has been non-stop since!  He's just over 10 months and was doing the whole cruising around furniture and taking a step or two here and there. And then one day just let go and took off!  It is quite amazing to watch!

But, just like you said...he is into EVERYTHING now!  Cabinets, touching the TV, pulling anything within his reach off the table, all the pillows off the couch, no end in sight!  Everyday it's like a tornado went through the house!

You can see he's very proud of himself with the walking though, and is having a blast doing it!

Get your running shoes ready! Our dude isn't walking yet. Just cruising everywhere. All of mine were early walkers so I'm hoping he will find cruising enough for awhile.

Lol oh my gosh! Babbles that sound like curses are HILARIOUS.

yeah I'm not in a hurry for walking! It's been hard enough with just the crawling and climbing so wishing you ladies all the best with your super active babies.

She says so many words she's got a little vocabulary now. She says cat, duck, clap, mama, dada, num num (get me food!), up! (Pick me up now mom!)---it's always hilarious hearing her yell/scream UP in the morning when she's tired of playing in her crib. There's a little bunny song I play for her that goes 'hop little bunnies hop hop hop' and she starts chiming in with "hop hop hop" too cute lol.

Her grandma was just opening her recipe book for her and there's a picture of a chef and she goes 'look chef', and my daughter starts going "shesh!", we were all like what? This kid picks things up fast.

  • Congrats to you too! Sounds just like our house! I thought the crawling was hard work, but good lord, this is almost impossible. The tantrums when I move stuff he can't have do make me chuckle though. He slams his head on the couch when I pick him up and move him from attempting to eat my phone or pull the dogs ears off, then as soon as I give him a toy it's like someone has flicked a switch and he's all smiles again.... For a couple of minutes anyway, then it's back to pulling away at the fire guard or eating my candles (which are way out of reach btw, baffles me how he gets his little hands on them) He finds it hilarious also, proper chuffed with himself.
I wasn't prepared for this, lol our first was a lot calmer and not a climber at all. Need eyes in the back of me head with this one!

God help us all. Haha.  :D
  • @RobsMrs77, hahaha. Yes!  He gets SO angry when I shut the cabinet he has attempted getting into and emptying for the gazillionth time!  Lots of tantrums here!  He unrolls the toilet paper (sometimes tries to eat it), dumps over the trashcans, etc.

Our poor cat too, he doesn't understand "soft" or "nice" whatsoever yet!  We are practicing lots of "NOs!", but all I get is a laugh and smile right now.

@yellow1daisy, that is amazing she is so verbal!  I definitely think they focus on one area, either being super verbal or super physical!  Our son still only says "mama" & "dada" (sometimes)...lots of babbles here and there, but nothing I can decipher yet.  He's just SO active.  Hoping he can pick up on some new words soon and tone down the activeness a bit!!
  • These stories are cracking me up!! We have a semi walker at 11 mos tomorrow. Our ped said his head is a lot for him to carry around. Lol. He's just under 20 lbs and close to 31" tall so he's tall and skinny. He tries to walk and gets like 4 steps before he gets top heavy and falls over. He's 75% for his head, 19% for weight and 80% for height. He looks like a pez dispenser or something. Lol
  • @dmbfan46835 hahaha!  A pez dispenser! Your posts always make me laugh out loud.

Your little fella is gorgeous. Those lips and eyes!

Enjoy the peace before the chaos begins! xo

@yellow1daisy wow! That IS amazing! Your sweet girl is really talking. Bless her. I also agree they focus on one thing at a time.
Makes me laugh that Jake can walk, but can't clap. You'd have thought it would be the other way round haha..... (As I type this he's trying to get back into the walker he's just climbed out of)  :D

This! Glad I am not alone, our son will NOT clap!  The kid is walking but not clapping or waving yet!  We sort of got some waves one day, but they have disappeared. But NEVER a clap once.  Sigh.  I clap and wave at him all day long...kid must think I'm crazy!
  • We are walking over here!! He was crawling just before 6 months, taking shakey steps at about 7.5 months, and walking across the room at 9 months & 6 days! We are appropriately terrified ;) Baby J now fully prefers to walk over crawl - just got him some canvas shoes today on his 10 month bday!
  • @Imbrandt Don't despair! He showed no signs and then suddenly could! My sisters casually mentioned that he clapped when they did something and my jaw dropped - WHAT?! He was nearly ten months - already walking, but no clapping! Within a week he is clapping at nearly everything lol We are also waiting for consistent and deliberate words/sounds for things - occasionally we get Mama/Dada/No etc, but it doesn't seem to be fully formed/controlled yet. I totally get it when people say all babies are different and hit different skills in different orders!
  • We have a walker here at 11 months :) DS2 is crazy pants but I'd say he has officially figured it out.  He has been taking steps for over a month but just now is seeming to prefer it over crawling in most instances.
  • LO has taken a few steps, he's just gotten to the point when he wants to go between things (like from the couch to the coffee table for example) he's letting go and walking that couple of steps to it. SO and I have tried to get him to walk from one of us to the other but instead of walking he will take a step or two then he dives head first- it's honestly hilarious. I suspect walking is just around the corner but we will see!!

  • First of all ladies, congrats to all the little ones who are walking right now! It really is a massive step (no pun intended there) :)

@shelbydd that's exactly what Jakey was like just before he took his first step. We did the walk to daddy, then back to mummy thing too. He pushed his walker round like a shopping trolley for a few weeks before the first steps. I think you're right, it's just around the corner! Very exciting!

I love watching him steady himself, the concentration in his face, and then he's off.  It's the arms out to the front that tickles me up, he uses them to balance himself. Didn't expect it so soon though, this little body stomping round the room, haha.
I want my little baby back just for a few more months at least. Thank goodness he still loves to snuggle with mama. :)

Piper is crawling at super sonic speeds, and almost to the point of cruising. She waves, claps, says "mama" & "dada", doesn't have a single tooth, but is refusing purees so gumming all the food she can get!
  • @PinkPrincessPiper haha, almost to the point of cruising. Ahh, clapping and waving! None of that here yet.
Mama & dadda too! Boss. I bet her little voice is dead cute. How are the boys with Piper? Have they adjusted to having a baby sis? Bet they dote on her.

  • @RobsMrs77 They adore her! The boys are getting so big. Liam starts kindergarten in just a couple weeks, then it'll just be us girls during the day. Looking forward to that! Here's her princess wave in the top pic. So stinkin' cute!

  • @PinkPrincessPiper omg! What a gorgeous picture! Little Piper waving! I love it. She looks so tiny on JR's shoulders, and the boys have really grown up. Beautiful family :)

Here's what Liam has to put up with.... Well 1 thing anyway... Haha

  • 10 month old walker over here too!!
  • @chelseajeanene I saw your vid! Omg! How wonderful! Congrats mama! :)
  • My kid has been walking since 8 and a half months but still doesn't clap or wave either! I just had to baby proof the entire house because he can't just stay in the living room with the gate. So in the kitchen we have these low shelves and I took everything off and filled them with Tupperware and big plastic spoons. He runs over and plays with it all and had a blast because he thinks he's not supposed to play with it. He only wants to play with forbidden items like dad's shoes or the stinky ratty dog toys. The kid is a runner at this point. So much energy!

My #3 kiddo was running at 8 months and at 7, still runs non stop ;)

My September '15 kiddo is the same way about only wanting to play with forbidden objects. Toilet paper is especially fun!!!

Thank you! He blows my mind everyday!
  • We have a walker too! She'll still gladly crawl most of the time but she'll take between 5-10 steps multiple times a day. Each day it's more and more. So fun! And tiring! ;)
  • @kmcshane0211 congrats ! Agreed, very tiring. Need eyes in the back and the side of our heads now! Haha.

@Momofsweetps good lord! That is early! Same here. Lots of toys, but prefers to splash in the dogs water bowl, or pull the fireguard over and sit on it. Looking all pleased with himself. The washing machine has become a particular favourite. I quite often find it turned off now, mid cycle. It's the lights, and the buttons are so easily pressed and just at his height!  He loves to watch it when it's spinning too, and the vibration just baffles him.  His little chubby face pressed into the glass. Super cute.

@jweber4747 wow! Another super early walker! Running now to! Ahh, the Tupperware, it's a good one that. Pots and pans here,  with a wooden spoon. He loves it, my ears don't though! Haha
looking forward to a clap or a wave. Jake dances like crazy when music is on, but no sign of a wave or clap yet!
  • Thanks! She's getting so fun. I read that early walking is related to temperament, which makes sense for my driven, risk-taking, go-getter daughter! I just love that her own temperament/personality is now really coming through. It's so exciting to see her for "her"!

@kmcshane0211 it's a lovely age isn't it? <3  I'd forgotten just how lovely it is, having an 8 year gap between the boys. Hard work, but magical seeing their little personality's develop like you said. Last night Jakey must have spent an hour saying something along the lines of 'Mum's bum' repeatedly. It was hilarious. Haven't a clue if he was saying that, but it certainly sounded like it. Haha.
Jake's a risk taker too, we call him cheeky monkey, as he's always swinging off, or climbing onto something he shouldn't be. Little tinker. lol. :)
  • @RobsMrs77 Cute!!! Jake sounds like such a fun little person!
  • We too at exactly 10months 3days.
  • @Escardoe congrats mama! Exact same time!

&kmcshane0211 thank you. He is. He's amazing. Just need to get his bedtime routine sorted and things will be perfect. He sure keeps me on my toes! :) love it! He's a happy little chubby chappy.  <3
