Induction disaster (not mine)

I wasn't sure where to put this but it's really bugging me and knew you'd all be able to commiserate, if that's even what I'm doing.  My sister's friends was due on 7/16 and for NO reason her dr decided she needed to be induced on 7/18.  She wasn't a good candidate, not dilated at all, etc.  There were no other ailments...good BP, no GD, mom and baby both healthy.   And of course now she's been in the hospital for 2 days with ZERO progress (I'm not shocked).  I have a feeling she's going to end up with a c-section that wasn't necessary and I can't help but feel like her dr did this on purpose.  Maybe I'm being hyper sensitive, but there's no reasonable justification for the induction only 2 days past EDD with no other complications.  I could see if she was 2 weeks past due, but it just doesn't feel right.

Re: Induction disaster (not mine)

  • I have seen this happen so many times to people I know. I'm pretty sure I know of more people with failed induction stories than successful ones.

  • My doctor (granted it's MFM) automatically induced at 39 weeks.  I asked why since everything is progressing normally (at least for me).  They said in their experience 39 weeks is the optimal time.  It lowers complications from waiting after 40 weeks and still gives LO enough time to grow.  I think it's just different practices.

In her case, it could the doc is doing it for selfish reasons, but I'd like to assume their research in their practice tells them that's the optimal time.  And don't forget there are always 2 sides to the story (or maybe pieces you are missing).

Id like to assume in stories like this that there may be a missing piece of information.  Maybe it was for scheduling reasons (maybe she wanted her OB there and this was their schedule)?

I've had 2 very good inductions and several friends with good inductions even with no prior progress.

  • It may also be that the mother was pushing for an induction. I know we are all approaching that "IAMSODONE" phase of pregnancy.

That was my first thought too. I know of several inductions that took days but didn't lead to a c-section. Sometimes when your body isn't quite ready it can take a while. Hope she doesn't need a c-section and baby comes soon!

  • My OBs said they induce around 40 and a half weeks to 41 weeks. They said they used to go to 42 but started noticing it led to health problems in the mother and the baby due to the placenta getting too old. So maybe it's the physicians' preference to do it earlier? I'm a FTM with no experience though.
  • My doctor will only schedule inductions at 41 weeks (as long as there's no other reason present), but I've heard some doctors prefer to do it even earlier because the placenta is only meant to sustain the fetus until 40 weeks. I know there are also scheduling issues, like if you absolutely want your OB to do the delivery you may have to schedule on a certain day of the week, that could make someone induce earlier. I don't know if I'd be comfortable with it, but to each their own.

It would be awful to be in labor for 2 days without any progress though.

  • That sounds fishy. Like other posters have said maybe there is a missing piece? I'm having a scheduled induction at 40 weeks but I have GD.
  • @SkiChic626 how did things turn out for her?

I agree a lot of doctors will rush into an induction, especially if the mom wants to be induced. I will be induced next week at 39 weeks if baby doesn't come on his own first, the only reason being that my labors are super short, and I'm already dilated a lot. This is my third, and neither of my kids made it to 39 weeks, so we're all pretty confident in an induction being just fine for me.

It IS miserable.  I was induced with DD and went 2 days with no progress.  I was, however, already 3cm dilated so they thought I was gonna go no problem, and we induced because my BP was getting a bit scary.

  • She finally had the baby on night #3.  I don't know details of what ultimately happened, but at least baby is finally out!

  • I was talking to my mom today about induction and apparently my sister's ob was willing to induce a few days after 40 weeks because my sister was uncomfortable.  My mom said my sister went into labor the day before the induction was supposed to take place so it never happened.  Some doctors just must be a little induction happy.
  • So baby was a c-section actually the morning after night #3...she went in on 7/18 and baby was born on 7/21.  Cord was wrapped around her neck, which is the reason they think she wasn't progressing.  Mom and baby are both doing great and have been home for a few days now.  I'm still skeptical about the induction, but at least everyone is good now!
