STM+ - When are you telling your kids?

When do you plan to (or when did you) tell your children that you're pregnant? I have a 4 1/2 year old and I'm afraid of telling him too early because it would be hard to explain if something were to happen. I'm thinking of maybe waiting until 2nd tri, but I don't know.

Re: STM+ - When are you telling your kids?

  • I have a 3 year old who knows and is beyond excited. I didn't mean to tell her so soon, but I did and it's been fine. My son is 16 months and has no clue.

  • My son is only 20 months so he doesn't get it yet. With older kids I would wait to tell them until second trimester. Something else to consider is, will they let it slip to anyone else? I know my 7 year old nephew is a chatter box, so if you are keeping it a secret from others make sure you let them know that lol
  • She says that the baby is in my "belly" by she has no idea what this really means for us ... Or her.

We will tell our kids just before we tell the rest of our family, whenever that is. We're still undecided, but sometime close to 2nd trimester. I know my 3yo can't keep a secret so I'll hold off on telling her. I've told the 15mo but she obviously isn't telling anyone. :)

  • I'm not sure.  I'm gonna announce it online after I hear the heartbeat , after the rest of the family knows. The older two go home to their moms August 18th,  so they'll have to know by then, however the both have facebook and I don't want them finding out that way. DH won't be home for the ultrasound... we may tell them before he leaves for work because I want to tell them together , ugh I just don't know.

  • We told our LO, but he's not even a year old yet, so of course he doesn't understand.
  • Charles knows. But he's 9 months soo
     Haha
  • I'm waiting until the first ultrasound, so another three weeks at least. I'm excited to tell my daughter; she's finally at an age that she would understand.

My daughter is 8. I'm pretty sure she has already figured it out. I told her and my hubby at the same time with last child but that ended in a very late 38 wk loss so then we had to explain death. Going to wait until 12 wks but she's probably just going to ask me if I am pregnant earlier than that.
  • My son is very young, but if he were older is wait until I was getting bigger. Eight months is so long for them to wait!

  • she's very perceptive, and this morning in front of her preschool class, rubbed my belly and asked if I had a baby in it, so I just whispered to her not yet, we're trying...if I tell her now, the whole world will know, so I'm trying to wait until we have a few more u/s under our belt to feel comfortable going public, probably once RE gives me the thumbs up to schedule an appt with my ob

  • My daughter is 11 and has been begging for a sibling for years. I don't think we will tell her before 12 weeks unless she picks up on it sooner which there is a high possibility it could happen.

Confession: when I asked this question, I guess I didn't really think it through. Hello, not everyone waits like 50 years between kids. There are going to be some kids who are too young.

My son will blab to everyone he knows -- probably even strangers he sees on the street. So, in addition to the worries about having to explain a loss, there's that.

  • I have a 9 year old and a 3 year old, I'm not sure when I want to tell them. I know my son, he'll blab, and I'm not quite sure how the mini minion will react. But I may wait until I have some definitive proof to show them - like an u/s picture.

Same my 10 month old delivered the message to my family since they live in another state.  He wore a big brother tshirt on FaceTime.  It was cute.  Haven't told anyone but family yet.
  • I told our almost 2 year old but not the older two! Ha, she can't really rat me out and doesn't get it. Although the other night she was pointing to my belly and kept saying "baby!" Luckily our other kids didn't hear her! I won't tell the older ones until 12 weeks.
  • It'll depend on if we take her to my appointments or not. She's almost 4 and incredibly smart and inquisitive. I am hoping to hold off until her birthday in September and maybe tell her as a present. Once we tell her, she'll tell the world. :) And I'm waiting another few weeks before telling family.

  • My LO is 3, and a couple of her daycare teachers have grown a belly and had a baby, so she kind of grasped the idea so she's been OBSESSED with babies these days! We are not telling her until 2nd tri, she will spill the beans, she's a talker and she has the memory of an elephant lol! I want to make sure all is good and well before getting her excited.
  • My daughter just turned 4 and I plan to tell her after I hear the heartbeat (so 10-12 weeks). I think she'll be very excited and I don't want to disappoint her if something goes wrong. Plus, she has a big mouth and I'm not ready for the world to know.

My almost 3 year old DD knows. She randomly comes up and talks to it and kisses-all on her own. We had talk about it for awhile, trying to get her used to the idea with her baby doll and having a brother or sister. She's super into the mommy stuff right now. Only persons she's mentioned it to is my mom. We don't talk to her much about it now and that seems to help her keep quiet around others.

  • My 3 year old knows. Today he asked me how my baby is and I said that I was feeling sick, so he kissed my tummy and said, "feel better baby".

In Dec. 14 I had a very early on miscarriage. I had the positive test earlier that week so we didn't tell anybody yet. When we got back from the ER, we made the decision to share the loss with then 8yo SD. She was very understanding and appropriately upset. I'm glad we shared that with her, because unfortunately death and loss is a part of life.

We we told her about DD when I was 6 weeks, she was almost 9 then. She was able to kept it secret because we told her that the news should be something that comes from us, as the babies parents.

Since this pregancy is so soon after DD (6months) we are waiting until the ultrasound to tell SD. Sometimes it's still a shock that we having another little one. For some reason it's harder to believe that it's real, I think that's why DH and I both need to see the baby before telling anyone.

When we were trying it felt important to share. Since this is a surprise, it's taking some adjusting time before sharing.

We will wait until 2nd tri with our kids.  The older two are 6 and 4 so they will definitely know what's going on.  When we had our 18 month old, the older two were 4 and 2 at the time and waited until after our first appt in the 2nd tri when the midwife heard the heartbeat with the Doppler.

  • We have an ultrasound next week, and are planning on tell them after that if everything goes as planned.
  • We don't have any children of our own DNA yet but we are raising my 6 year old niece and she's been talking about having a "brother" for several months now. We've decided to wait to tell her until the first ultrasound (8/15). We're going to let her announce it to most of our family :) I think she'll enjoy that and our family will love that she's a part of the announcement. Brother or no brother, we'll love it all the same.

  • We told our 2.5 year old. But I know he doesn't really get it. It was fun an exciting for us though!
  • My 6 yr old has the biggest mouth everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr so we don't plan on telling them till I tell the world which wont be until we hit viability same as with all my pregnancies. Plus my almost 4 yr old wont have a clue what I am talking about and neither will my almost 2yr old lol.

  • I guess we're going to have to tell DD (2.5) because we plan on doing the big sister shirt thing with my parents next week. We just realized though that this also means telling HER she's going to be a big sister.

  • @chrlyr I'm in the same boat as you. DD is 4.
I know this post is old but i just stumbled upon it....and almost wish I didn't read it. There is no way I can wait much longer.
We are going to start announcing to more people soon and I want her to know first. Plus, I think we are going to announce with a big sister shirt. She's going to start telling everyone she sees I'm sure but I think I'm ready to take that risk.

  • @howdthathappen I think we will probably wait until the NT scan (assuming we make it that far -- my appointment to see the heartbeat isn't until next week) and until after our first tri genetic screenings (I'm 35) to tell him. He's already noticed my bloat ("Mommy, your tummy is sticking out!"), so hopefully we actually make it that long.

  • Planning to tell them around Halloween. We have old them early the last time and I had a miscarriage at 10 weeks earlier this year. They are 4 and 2.5 now.
  • Being that this is my 6th pregnancy and with the last one I popped so fast (in maternity clothes by 12 weeks) if it goes the same we will probably tell them when I am around 8 or 9 weeks. 6yo DD knows, thought it would be fun for her to share the secret with us for a bit since DS knew last time!
