Newborn hearing test

guess I'm moving over to July from the August board. Ds arrived at 37 weeks on July 19. Still waiting to be released from hospital but they gave ds the hearing screening twice. First time he failed the right ear and passed left. Next day he failed the left and passed the right. Now I have to schedule an appointment with a specialist. Anyone have this happen to them??

My LO failed his hearing test twice in the hospital in both ears. They finally got him to pass it just before we left the hospital. Apparently he had a lot of gunk in his ears. He's 6 months old now and heard just fine if I can judge by the way he jumps when the dog barks :). It can't hurt to see the specialist and have them tell you everything is OK. Good luck!

  • Not me personally but my niece failed twice. She ended up having lots of fluid in her ears which is common. She is totally fine. Try not to worry too much, I'm sure they're being in the "better safe than sorry" mindset.
  • Both of my daughters failed the hearing test as well. We have an appointment scheduled for sometime in August for DD2. With DD1, she ended up passing after the appointment with the audiologist. Most babies who fail the test while in the hospital will usually pass so I wouldn't worry too much. They just want to make sure there aren't any issues with the baby's hearing and the audiologist will have much better equipment to make that determination than the hospital can.
  • Mine failed one side because of fluid, and the nurses said who did the test went way to fast and should have done something like turn his head and he would have passed. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just fluid or something simple.

  • Ours just had one ear fail too. I'm really glad I saw this before he took the test or might have worried too.

  • My LO was born yesterday so I will have to come back to this... If you don't hear from me later tag me! i work with families whose little ones don't pass their hearing screening in the hospital, which means answering questions like this all the time.  there are several reasons this could happen and one of the most common is fluid as PPs have mentioned.  I will explain more later, but even though fluid will go away, it's still important to follow up with the audiologist to rule out any form of hearing loss.
  • Passed quickly the second time for us.

  • @searchingforameaning- I'm sorry it took so long for me to come back to this... life is crazy with two now! Anyway, the screening they do in the hospital only means that more testing needs to be done.  The test that you do with the audiologist is called a diagnostic test and it is the most accurate test you can do for hearing on babies this small.  The only way to rule out hearing loss is to do this diagnostic testing, so I would encourage you to follow through with the appointment.  Most of the time, they can do it while the baby is asleep in your arms.  As for passing in one ear and referring in the other and then it switching... the most common cause is fluid but it could also be the equipment or even ear canal size.  There are many reasons a baby can fail the newborn hearing screening and the only way to determine how a baby is hearing is the diagnostic test.  Any form of hearing loss can cause a speech and language delay (hearing loss is not black and white, there are different degrees and even types) which is why they encourage you to follow-up so early.  I hope this makes sense in my sleep deprived state.  Please let me know if I need to clarify or explain anything further!
  • My LO failed in his right ear.  They said it could be fluid or just that the room which they did the test in was noisy (in a ward with 3 other babies and they were moving beds around).  We go for an additional test on Thursday this week.  They said we could stay the day of discharge for another test but I just wanted to get home.  Im not sure of what will happen but I can let you know if that helps.
