Gas causing nighttime wakeups

DS has gone from sleeping through the night to waking up with gas multiple times a night for the last 3 weeks or so. We have had zero changes to our diets (BF and solids twice a day) so I have no idea what could be causing it! When he wakes up he's squirming and crying and arching and doesn't settle down until he passes the gas. It can take me 1-2 hours to get him back to sleep. I've tried gas drops before bedtime and it doesn't help. I also try them when he wakes and I'm not sure it helps much then either.

Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this??

Re: Gas causing nighttime wakeups

  • LO has that problem when he gets constipated here and there since he started eating more solids. Not sure if you are having that issue. I give him a serving of peaches, prunes or pears at least once a day everyday. I also started giving more water with it being hot out. That helps to keep things "soft" and moving too. Beans make him gassy too.

  • How much water does your LO consume each day?
  • @KristiSigma we have recently started giving him food in larger pieces rather than purees only. He seemed constipated last week and I gave peaches, pears, and eventually got prune juice but never had a chance to give it to him because he ended up with a fever and diarrhea the same day.  Now that he's feeling better he is going more frequently but still waking with gas.

@laurapaine2003@yahoo.com we offer water with his solids. Sometimes he chugs it and sometimes he has nothing to do with it! Even then it's maybe 2oz. He's BF every 3hrs still.

I did talk to his pediatrician today as she was following up with us since he was sick over the weekend. I brought the issue up and she recommended I try going to a dairy free diet to see if it helps. I just wonder why now at almost 10 months is it an issue (and if it does help why didn't I do it sooner!?)
  • We kinda had the same thing and the minute we upped her water to 5-6 oz (during a 24 hour period) she began getting her gas and poo's out with no problem again!
  • I offer water with solids and sometimes the cup goes on the floor too or sometimes he chugs it! I would say he drinks 2 to 4 ounces of water on average a day. If we go outside in the heat, he will drink more. He still drinks BM but I think he just needs water to go with the solids otherwise the poops are hard and painful for him.
  • Agreed. My LO used to have issues with passing his poops but he has had a much easier time and I think it is due to drinking more water.
  • Thank you all for the replies! We have upped his water today and he has already had 3 bm's! Interested to see how sleep goes tonight..fingers crossed!
  • @leeeahyo I had an issue like this previously maybe around 6 months I would say and I spoke with my lactation consultant and nutritionist and they said that if LO didn't have an issue in the beginning with the milk that he wouldn't now. It doesn't just happen, its an allergy that starts from the beginning. So hopefully all the rest of the suggestions will help! Just know going diary free breastfeeding is HORRIBLE and so hard.
  • @ABombard12 i was wondering this and I'm so glad you replied to confirm that thought! I figured if it was an issue we would have known about it well before 10 months old. I started researching the things you have to avoid going completely dairy free and there's hidden milk in EVERYTHING. I'm glad I asked on here and got the suggestion of more water and tried that first. It really has improved since we started offering more!
