Cow's Milk

This might be a silly question, but I've been wondering...our LOs aren't supposed to have cow's milk until after a year old.  So why is yogurt, cheese, etc, okay to give them?  These contain cow's milk.

I was just thinking about this today as I was giving my son some yogurt.

Just curious!

Re: Cow's Milk

  • Hmm.. I'm curious about this myself. I wonder if it's more about not replacing formula with cows milk yet? I don't know.. Hopefully someone does!

  • My ped said to start giving DS whole cows milk mixed with breast milk at 11 mos. I plan to start weaning at that time and adding cows and almond milk to his bottles of BM. That way he's ready to rock and fully weaned at 1 year. She also said the cultures in the yogurt are amazing and that's why she often recommends yogurt at 6 plus months.

Im thinking I read some place that cows milk shouldn't be given as a replacement for formula or BM til a year because it doesnt have all the stuff our babies need to that point but Its plenty fine to have dairy products prior.

I don't think milk is recommended earlier than one because some babies have trouble digesting lactose. Yogurt and some cheeses have less lactose and it is easier for baby to digest.
  • From what I've read milk isn't as nutritious which is why most peds recommend only bm or formula until 12 months and then starting to wean.

  • It's because they're not straight milk, it's not as strong as milk itself. We have allergies and that's what out allergist said. We aren't starting cows milk until age 2 because of his recommendations, no yogurt either. We do cheese though and he has no problems

This is what I've heard too, plus yogurt has probiotics, which someone else mentioned.
  • The proteins are more broken down and digestible in yogurt/ cheese etc...
  • We use cow's milk in cooking or smoothies, just not as a beverage. I don't want it to replace breastmilk, because I think my milk is better designed for her. With DD1 I started cow's milk at 14mo when I stopped pumping at work, but even that was at daycare only until 18mo.

  • At my 9 month appointment the Dr said once we can get lo down to 24 oz formula a day we can start giving him milk so my 10.5 m old has 4 oz milk 2 oz formula a day 4 times a day now. His daycare feeds him breakfast lunch snacks as well as puree I send puffs yogis etc. He comes home with a huge belly lol. I'm nervous about the whole milk thing but following my pediatrician still
