Fetal Fibronectin Test at 33 weeks

I lost my mucus plug at 33 weeks and 3 days and the doctor wanted to see me immediately. Baby is still high. I have not dilated and no contractions. We did the fFN test and the test came back positive, meaning there's a chance for preterm labor. This is my 1st baby and my pregnancy has been great -no morning sickness or gestational diabetes. I'm just a little anemic.

Has anyone done this test? How soon after getting the positive test, did you deliver?

I'm currently on bedrest for the weekend and go back Thursday for my check-up and possibly be on bedrest until baby arrives. Not happy about it but I know it's what's best for baby.

Re: Fetal Fibronectin Test at 33 weeks

  • I have had the test done 3 times but mine all came back negative. Did they tell you that there are things that can make it give a false positive. If you had sex within 48 hours before you had the test, it can come back positive. A positive test also doesn't mean you will go into labor, you just have to pay a lot more attention to your body when you are having labor signs like contractions.

Fingers crossed that baby keeps cooking for a while. Good luck!!!

  • Same as previous poster. I had it done at 33w because of contractions every 3-5 minutes but mine was negative. They did tell me if you had sex the 48 hours prior it would scew results. Also, they said if it was negative then it was pretty certain you wouldn't go into labor in the next 2 weeks, but if it was positive then you aren't necessarily going into labor in the next 2 weeks either, although you could. they said the positive is kinda iffy either way. Good luck!!
  • I wish we didn't have this test in the lab that I work in. In my opinion it has way too many false positives. Especially if your physician does an internal exam before collecting the sample. If they did an exam on you before collecting the swab, I wouldn't put too much thought into the result. I would still rest and relax like they said, but the chances of you being in preterm labor based solely off this one test result is slim (especially without contractions/being dialated/etc).

  • I have a friend that had this test done (her son is about 12 now, so maybe it's more accurate now), but she was at high risk for pre term labor early on in her pregnancy. Her result was negative,  and she had her son 2 days later, almost 3 months early. I know these tests can be helpful, but just remember they are wrong a lot too.

I wanted to share my experience to hopefully ease your mind. I had the test done last time I was pregnant and got a false positive at 23 weeks. It terrified me. I had no episodes of preterm labor and didn't deliver her until I was induced at 40w3d. These tests give a ton of false positives. I hope it's wrong for you too!
  • I have had it done several times. I have seen it be accurate and not accurate with friends.  I hope you cook baby a little longer.
  • I had it done at 29 weeks. It was negative. 2 weeks exactly at 31 weeks my water broke. They said the test was an indicator for a two week span... I guess the babies took that literally!
