Nbr: has anyone been an usborne consultant?

hi, has anyone in this group ever been a consultant for usborne books? A girl I know is trying to talk me into it and I'd love to hear what experience others may have had. I'm not trying to spam or sell this to any of you at all, just trying to get thoughts on the company. Thank you!

  • I've never heard of it, but I would avoid anything selling anything where part of the business model is convincing your customers to sell the product too.

  • @ceclarlinetlo I've never seen anyone trying to get others to sign up under them. The girl I know sells it and knows I was interested, so she was just giving me information. It's more along the way of pampered chef where it's selling products- they are unique kids books.

Ah - I misunderstood from how you originally said it. I guess you just need to get a feel for if 1. you like the product 2. Think you'll make enough money for it to be worth your effort

I, personally, would not make a good salesperson lol

  • @ceclarlinetlo yeah I guess that's confusing. I am just hesitant bc it seems like there is a lot to know and she was trying to tell me about the Facebook groups and stuff that help to make me feel better. I'm normally pretty against direct sales, and there are a few companies I really hate (plexus! Bc all they want you to do is sign up under them and get others to as well) but I wanted to find a way to make some money on the side because since DD has been born I seem to spend so much on clothes and things for her thst I'm really putting my self last, because I mean, she can't help that she grows out of things. And I do believe in books for kids, my daughter has a room full. This is the only thing I've ever really considered selling. Ever.
  • I haven't been a consultant, but as a customer, the prices of the books are too high.

  • I have a friend who is a consultant and she loves it.  But i have to agree with @Renee1105 I feel like their prices are high.
  • I am a consultant. I have done many direct sales companies and of all of them it is by far the best because you are not required to keep any inventory and I believe if I'm not mistaken you only have to have one order per year (no minimum amount) to keep your consultant status which is easy if you want to just order a couple for your own kids to get a discount. I am not super active anymore but I LOVE the books. Some of the specialty/novelty books have high retail prices so being a consultant gives you a great discount. And you can offer discounts to your customers if they host a party and have a good amount of sales. It's also good to note though that I think 85% of the books are $15 or under. I'd say go for it if you're interested. The starter pack also gives you just a great library for your own family!

  • @scgirl6113 thank you!!!! Eep I'm kinda excited, I've never done anything like this. But the thing about the home library is what I keep telling myself about if I fail. I did look at the prices and yes some of them seem kinda spendy but a lot are right in line with the prices of other kids books. If I go to barns and noble it's 20 to buy a hard back kids book. I also like that they have kinda affordable little activity things. That way if I do a vendor fair I can grab a few of those because I've heard that they sell well at events like that bc parents are trying to entertain their kids!
  • Good luck! @emilyn2012

  • I like the Usborne books but after buying some directly I then looked on Amazon and bought a bunch used (and in perfect condition) for 1/4 of the price. Of course you can't get everything there, like all the new books, but just giving you a heads up.  I am sure I am not the the only person that does this.

  • I had an Usborne/Kane Miller party and loved the deals/prices I got through that.  Sorry, not helpful at all, but I love the books :)
I used to be a kindergarten teacher, though, and I'm kind of obsessed with a lot of kids books (namely, Mo Willems).
  • I'm a relatively new consultant. I enjoy doing it, but it is hard to keep getting parties. I feel like I've run out of people. But, the money I made more than covered any expenses I had and I feel like overall it was still a good decision. Working on getting more bookings......
  • Ahhh I just submitted my application. I am so so so nervous!!!! I hope I don't fail!!
  • As a customer who just bought, the $6 flat shipping cost really blows. All I wanted was one wipe clean book that was $8, so I ended up ordering a few more because it wasn't worth the shipping. Good for my consultant I guess but I won't be ordering from them again. Just too expensive all around.

  • @MrsRahl yeah I personally understand that, but I also personally run into that a lot of other places too. places like shutterfly or something normally run promotions for free things but then I end paying like 10 dollars for shipping. Maybe you can look at vendor fairs for their books too.
  • @emilyn2012 I hear ya. Just my 2 cents from a customer's perspective. Whether you agree or not, just something to think about that maybe other customers feel the same way. I've also been invited to 6  different usborne parties in the last month, so I think the market is pretty saturated right now.

  • @MrsRahl hmmmm well I did sign up.... I hope my markets not totally saturated
