Gender?

I've heard from several places now that you can determine the gender of the baby through different types of blood tests,  some say as early as 9 weeks. One way to find out is also the same blood test that determines the risk for down syndrom . I'm scheduled to take that test in two weeks,  do you think they will also test for gender or do I have to ask? Are any of you all doing this?

I believe that they are getting a full genetic profile when they do this, so they definitely find out the gender.  Whether they tell you or not is entirely up to you.  I am having one done as well (over 35) and we will definitely be finding out.

  • If you are talking about the Panorama, Harmony, MaterniTi21 tests, then yes. Like @sagoon said, it tests for most chromosomal abnormalities and separates the DNA from the placenta from your own. When you sign off on the release form, you have the option to check the box to have the sex reported as well. I just received my results yesterday and could have found out but we are team green. These tests are typically meant for high risk patients and those 35 and over. However, I believe anyone can take them now and pay out of pocket.

If you are referring to the NT scan and Quad Screening that is typically done at 12 weeks, this does not determine the sex.

@LastMango Good to know about the Quad, because that is the one I'll be getting. (Even though I want to wait for birth... for now, haha).

I'm not gonna lie, when that check box was staring me in the face last week it was HARD not to fold and find out. It's amazing to me that you can find out so early. But I love surprises and imagining both scenarios throughout pregnancy. It was just so cool to me to find out at birth.

  • Everything that @cjs260 said!

My doctor did tell me that the test I am having done at 10 weeks will determine sex as there are several sex linked disorders that they test for like Turners syndrome.

  • My husband and I have chosen to do this test not to find out the sex of the baby but to find out about chromosomal abnormalities. His family has some history of this so we just want to make sure we are in the clear. That being said, I'm anxiously waiting my results and now finding out the sex is a bonus!

Isn't the quad screening usually done at 15 weeks? My OB recommended that to us in lieu of NT and told us it was usually done anywhere between 15 and 20 weeks (sure hope so anyway, because I'm only a few days away from 12 and I don't have it scheduled yet)

ETA: Quoting the wrong thing! Blergh.

Yeah, I am only having this done because I am over 35 so it is the standard of care at my OB's practice to do it on all preggos that age or older, and it is covered by our insurance.  Mostly I am stressing that they're going to find something horribly wrong with the baby, but the fact than I can find out the sex is a tiny perk.  If they weren't testing me for this anyway, I would be waiting for the 20 week ultrasound like everyone else.  I don't think the OP was saying she is doing this just to find out the sex, but since you can, why not?  (assuming you're not team green)

@canavara That's my understanding. My OB said they try to do it around 16w. My insurance doesn't cover the NT screen, but it does cover the Quad, so that's what I'm going with.

  • @cjs260 Responses like that are just going to discourage people from asking questions which is the whole point of this group.

@LastMango How long did it take you to get your results back? I'm scheduled for the panorama testing at 12 weeks due to Downs on both sides of the family.
  • @loveinak, I just did mine on Monday (11 weeks). I'll let you know when it comes back! Anxiously waiting......

  • @loveinak I had my blood drawn last Thursday and results back on Wednesday. Super fast!

  • The main reason for that type of test is to check for abnormalities to prepare or decide what how you want to choose to procede. Finding out the sex of the baby is a perk. But yes, you will be able to find out if you choose.

  • I just did the blood draw for harmony yesterday.  I am not AMA, but wanted to do the test bc of accuracy (and finding out the sex early was a bonus).  It was not covered by insurance but very reasonably priced.  I am opting out of NT/AFP this time since I did this instead.

I did mine on 6/6 and am still waiting.  They said 10-14 business days.

Update: I got my results today (the 13th business day).  The results are normal, and I am having a boy!  The doctor's office doesn't know why the lab took so long, but waiting was agony. I just kept calling the doctor's office for updates.
  • They just told me to sign, didn't tell me to check a box. I hope I can still find out the gender.
  • It's a boy! I didn't need to check any boxes :)
  • We have an ultrasound scheduled for next week at 16+4 where we'll hopefully be able to find out. For those of you who wanted to make it a special thing, did you just tell the tech to write down the sex and not say anything? I don't really care much for sex reveal parties but we're hoping to take it to a nearby bakery and just have them put a cupcake in a box for us so we can open it later together when I'm not laying on an awkward table covered in ultrasound gel. But I don't really know if this is a pointless endeavor because maybe it'll just be painfully obvious when we see the ultrasound (last time they told us they were 80% sure it was a boy)
  • @canavara I didn't think it was obvious at DD's anatomy scan, but I'm terrible at amateur ultrasound readings.  People post their ultrasounds here asking what we think it is and I'm like uhhhh I see a head and legs.

  • @canavara it all depends on the angle they are able to get. With DS1 it was extremely obvious. Even DH who can barely pickout a head on an ultrasound could tell the second she got the wand on that angle.
With DS2 the tech never got a very good angle. She was able to tell us boy but we were never really able to tell without her pointing it out.
Baby Boy 3 is on the way!
    Due 1/21/17
  • I did it and they just asked if I wanted to know the sex when they called with the results.  It took a week after my blood test to find out.  Good luck!

  • @canavara if you want to be surprised, then don't look when the tech is hanging out by the genitalia. I knew immediately that my daughter was a girl. It's obvious. I need to see the junk with my own eyes in order to be fully convinced that my kiddo is male or female.
  • Panorama results are in! It's a girl! Can't wait to meet our precious Briella!
