Headaches

The past few days I have been getting awful headaches that I just can't shake.  I am using magnesium daily and drinking lots of water.  I want to avoid tylonel/OTC meds as much as possible.  Any other suggestions?

  • Oh man that's the worst! Some days the only thing that helps me is a coke and a Tylenol but if I can kick it another way I try that too. What works for me lately is a cool shower or laying in a cool dark room. I find they're worse when I'm tired or hungry so trying to get enough sleep and eating protein helps a lot to prevent.

    Been dealing with this too, and agree it seems to be worse when I'm tired, hungry, or dehydrated. And I've been realllly hungry the past few days. So I'm making a point to eat more protein, and to eat more often in general. I've also been drinking tons of ice water with lemon. 

    For bad headaches the only way I've gotten relief is by lying down in a dark, quiet place, and applying a warm compress. For some reason warmth is more effective for me than cold.

  • Tylenol is a buncha useless BS, says this headache sufferer. I agree with all the other suggestions of eating, drinking, cool dark room, etc.

    For me there is a huge mechanical component to my headaches. My neck is, to use the medical term, all kinds of messed up, and that contributes to my headaches. I found a physiotherapist that specializes in headaches, and when things flare up I go see him. If the above remedies do not seem to be addressing your headaches, it's possible there could be a mechanical component and seeing a physio may help.

    Life-long migraine/headache sufferer here and I used to wear these when I was out of sumatriptan.

    Just don't go out in public wearing it :) N-thing all the opinions of "lay down in a cool dark room" though, if it's an option. If cold compress doesn't work, sometimes caffeine and a hot shower does.

    If it feels like it might be sinus related, I recommend sinus rinses. They've been helping me relieve some of the pressure.
  • Woke up today with what felt like the biggest hangover headache. I drank loads of water and got myself outside (which wasn't an easy choice) I found that surprisingly the sunshine made a big difference. I know everyone is different but it really helped me out :) of course I had a baseball cap and sunglasses

  • Eat something salty or something sweet that always helps me. Or drink something with caffeine. That's the only way I can get rid of mine 
  • I've been drinking a lot of water, and using peppermint essential oils. Never was a big essential oil fan, but it works wonders on a headache! You can usually get them at Walgreens or another place like that. Hope they get better soon!

  • I feel you girl! I have been getting daily headaches.  Thursday I had to lay in a dark room with a pillow over my head and fell asleep for an hour before it went away.  I'm trying to avoid tylenol as long as I can, but eventually break down and take some 
  • My sister swears by the chiropractor for things like this. I've never been so I can't say anything good or bad about it. I was going to ask if you wear glasses or contacts. Your eye's can change with pregnancy and in some cases change by enough to cause headaches. It may be worth getting in to the eye doctor to just check it out. I have some computer glasses that are a very low prescription and find that if I wear them too long, I get headaches. If I take them off, they go away. I have an eye appointment in September and since I can see just fine without them I'm not too worried about it.

  • I would say try a chiropractor if you haven't before.  They are great for so many pregnancy related things!
    I don't get migraines, but I use essential oils for a headache (either the tension blend DoTerra has or a combo of peppermint/lavender/frankincense).
    I hope you can find some relief they get better for all you who are suffering with them!
  • I am hesitant to use EOs at this point... I am not comfortable ingesting them while I am pregnant.  I have tried some blends but they just don't cut it like when I use internally.

    i am going to start going back to my chiro in the next couple of weeks.  Maybe that will help!

    You don't ingest the peppermint oil for a headache. I just apply it topically on the back of my neck and around my sinus areas.

    @lindsladle15 I will totally take your advice and buy some essential oils. I'm going to buy lavender and pepperment!! 
  • I don't ingest oils even though the ones I buy are safe to do so. i put them on my temples and base of neck. 

    Currently in bed with a bad headache.
  • I'm not sure if this is still a concern for anyone, I've been getting terrible headaches throughout my pregnancy as well and recently they've seemed to kick up a notch. I talked to my dr about it yesterday and she just told me to make sure I'm drinking 2 liters of water a day, and to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day making sure that those meals and snacks that are high in healthy fats - she noted that most women reach for carbs but to avoid doing so and reach for something like avocado, almonds, etc for a quick snack.

    For my case she also told me to try tylenol if the above doesn't help, I want to avoid any medecine but she made it clear that the only other option is a migraine medication thats stronger than tylenol.
  • I'm still dealing with headaches on and off, and definitely agree it helps if I stay hydrated. And I've realized low blood sugar is a trigger, so I try not to wait too long between meals. 

    I also do acupuncture weekly and my acupuncturist has been working on the headaches, which seems to be helping. She told me there are acupressure points in the feet and hands for headache relief, but the points in the hands are contraindicated for pregnancy. So she recommended asking my husband for a foot massage if I do get a bad headache :). The main point to focus on is between your big and 2nd toes - kind of next to the ball of the foot. 
  • @jalapenopopper Regular Tylenol wasn't working on my migraines but Excetrin Tension Headache helped quite a bit- It's basically Tylenol with some caffeine.
  • I too suffer from headaches/migraines. They get worse during pregnancy, and I've now had them in all 3 of my pregnancies. I too take magnesium oxide in a 400mg dose. Tylenol does absolutely nothing for me. Often days, I can avoid a headache all together if I have a cup on half regular/half decaf coffee. If I don't, then a headache is sure to knock on my door. Magnesium oxide does help tremendously, you just need to take it every day for about a week or so. They will eventually expand the constricted blood vessels thanks to estrogen. 

    If these tricks do not work, you can talk to your OB about a prescription that has tylenol/caffeine in a little bit of a stronger dose. Tylenol is safe during pregnancy, so its worth a try. 
  • How have you been sleeping? I was experiencing the same thing and sleep was my issue... And more water!!! :)
