Tips on dealing with anxiety?

I know I'm a control freak so I definitely expected pregnancy to be a little hard for me emotionally, but whether it's the hormones or just my inherent nutjobness, I can't seem to relax this week. I have my second US on Tuesday and I keep convincing myself that something will be wrong. My first US was at 5+1 and they saw the gestational sac, but when I was leaving the nurse asked me if they'd seen the fetal pole and they had not.

I know 5+1 is early to see the fetal pole but I haven't been able to get her question out of my head. I am generally very prone to anxiety and medicated with MMJ but obviously am no longer doing that now. Anyone have any baby-friendly anxiety remedies or tips on how to calm down and expect the best?

Re: Tips on dealing with anxiety?

  • Meditation, yoga and a healthy dose of Zoloft. Ask your doctor about some meds if you're having a tough time. It really can make all the difference.

  • Meditation and exercise definitely help, but I would be a MESS if I wasn't on my meds too. Even on my medication I worry. I would talk to your doctor if you feel like your worries are taking over or more that your "normal".

  • Coming from a control freak myself, exercise and yoga/meditation seem to help with anxiety. Also, you have to just tell yourself that a lot of pregnancy is out of your hands.. You just have to take it a day at a time. Take deep breaths and try to relax.. 5 weeks is still early.
  • My Zoloft baby just turned 5.  I am still on it for depression and anxiety.   My doctors have allowed it in pregnancy.   I am not saying that is the answer for everyone,  but if it is for you,  don't be afraid to use something.

For me:: Exercise! No caffeine! Journaling helps me a lot to get my axious thoughts down on paper. And stay busy--get out of the house!

I don't have any advice because my coping skills stink when it comes to controlling my anxiety even though I'm in therapy (which does help somewhat so I have someone to unload on about everything.) anyone know if there was already a thread started about people who have had to wean off meds since becoming pregnant or just a general anxiety/depression medication thread? I've been trying to play catch up because I haven't been on in a while and didnt come across anything yet.
  • Start making to do lists for each month! It helped so much with my last pregnancy that I started doing that now. It's never too early to start preparing! Once you are done with that make freezer meal ideas, baby necessities, etc. With my son, they couldn't detect a heart beat at first. Turned out it was just early. I switched OB's and told him what happened, and he explained that usually that's why they wait until you are 8 weeks, sometimes longer, for your doctors appointment. I have a beautiful healthy baby boy after they made me worry for several weeks! Keep positive and if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here!
  • I find reading really good books helps take my mind off things. Not baby related books! Just books for fun.

Anyhow, I had ivf so my dates are exact. They couldn't see a fetal pole on my ultrasound at 5 weeks 5 days, just the sac and yolk sac. But at 6 weeks 5 days, it was visible and a heartbeat was seen too. Best wishes for you!

  • Thanks everyone! We went back last week when I was 7w2d and saw a heartbeat but was measuring 6w0d. Have another one on Monday. Trying to think of this as an important lesson in patience and acceptance... Still freaking out on and off but really trying hard to just take it day by day. And took the advice above and started meditating again - it has helped!
