Group B Positive w/ Planned C Section

If this has already been addressed, let me know, but question...

If you test positive for Group B Strep, but have a planned C-Section at 39 weeks for other reasons, how does the positive test impact you practically? Obviously if I go into labor/my water breaks before the C-Section date, I need to move with greater haste to the hospital to get antibiotics before delivery. But, if no labor occurs before my scheduled C-Section, will they still give antibiotics to me 4 hours before the C-section, following the recommendation of antibiotics 4 hours before delivery? How does this all work together?

Thanks ladies for sharing any knowledge. My next doctor appointment is in a week and I'll ask the doctor, but I'm curious as to the answer in the meantime!

I had group b strep with my last pregnancy but had a csection. I was told the antibiotic wasn't needed in that case. It is still good for the dr to know just in case

I haven't had a C/S or Group B positive, but I believe the risk of Group B strep only applies in a vaginal delivery, though I could be wrong...

My test results haven't come back yet, but my Dr. told me the results wouldn't matter either way since I'm a scheduled C-section.

I believe, like PP said, the risk is only for vaginal deliveries. The concern is transition can occur while the baby passes through the birth canal, so it wouldn't be an issue with a C section.

From my understanding it is only important for a vaginal delivery. I believe it can be passed on to baby as they pass through the vagina during delivery. Also, I was told that once you test positive for Group B Strep, you will always have it for future pregnancies.

@AmandaG225 nope, each pregnancy is different. I was positive with DS1 and just got the results back for this pregnancy and I'm negative. I believe if you're positive in one, it's more likely you will be in subsequent pregnancies, but not guaranteed.

@Bookhousegirl Gotcha - I have been lucky enough to be negative for both my pregnancies so I don't have a lot of knowledge on the topic

My doctor told me that if you are positive for group b strep and you are having a c section that it doesn't really matter, the baby won't come in contact with the affected area and they will likely give you antibiotics after your c section for good measure. Check with your OB also, I know every doctor is different! Good luck

GBS positive and scheduled for my c-section in a week. My OB said if my water breaks, before scheduled, I need to go to the hospital ASAP for antibiotics and then they will do the CS. Otherwise my OB said they put antibiotics in the IV at some point prior to the surgery "just in case." She said I wouldn't even know I got them but they do it just for precaution.

I have read that GBS positive women should still receive abx prior to cesarean, as a safety precaution. Because GBS can be the cause of UTIs and uterine infections. I am GBS positive and clindamycin-resistant ughh.. allergic to PCNs and cephalosporins. Looks like I will be receiving the hard core vancomycin prior to delivery!
