Little One's Latest Injury

So, now that are babies are rolling, crawling, standing up, or even cruising(!) what accidents have your little one's had so far?

Bridget's gotten a ton of bumps to the noggin.  The positive effect of this is she doesn't cry when she just falls down any more, only when she actually hits her head on a hard surface.  The negative effect (besides making me feel like an awful parent every time she does cry) is that she's now a lot bolder because she's not fearful of trying new things like lunging off the couch when the cat walks by or pulling on the cabinet door until it bops her in the face.

Last night was the scariest injury yet.  It was the first time she bled.  She busted her lip when she fell.  She was standing up at the coffee table and was chewing on a Scooby Doo bobble head, as you do.  (It's her newest obsession and since none of the parts are small enough to be swallowed, I just let her play with it.  I only stop her from playing with things I don't want ruined or that will cause her harm.  Everything else in the house is fair game.)  So she was chewing on that and decided she could let go of the table and turn around.  She went right down and the bobblehead cut into her lip and gum.  She started crying and I saw her mouth fill up with blood.  It was so scary.  I grabbed her and ran to the kitchen to get some ice and a towel to put it in.  She spent the next hour chewing on ice.  I put a little orajel on and gave her a bit of tylenol and she was right as rain by bed time.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

Re: Little One's Latest Injury

  • Zeke thankfully hasn't drawn blood on himself yet, but I'm pretty sure he injures himself every day. (At least that's what it feels like)... Like you, I let him explore and play with anything he can't swallow or unless I don't want it broken. So mostly right now he eats a lot of newspaper lol. I know he's going to get hurt plenty (especially since he seems to be a rough and tumble kind of boy like his daddy), but he's resilient! I figure a few scrapes and bruises along the way will help him figure out what's a good idea and what's not so smart.

The worst injury was when he was just figuring out how to pull up and decided to "help" me with our plastic dishes so he pulled up on the open dishwasher. He had pulled up on the corner and didn't have a good enough grasp so when he let go with one hand to reach for a plastic plate, he slipped, bopped his mouth on the corner of the dishwasher then landed on the back of his head on the linoleum floor. I'm pretty laid back usually, but that tumble even freaked me out.

  • Penelope is obsessed with the remote. I try to keep it out of reach because I'm worried the buttons will pop off and could be a choking hazard. When she does manage to get her hands on it she always hits herself in the forehead in her over eager attempt to put it in her mouth.

If she ever drew blood I think I'd freak out. I know you're not supposed to because it could scare them, but how could you not?
  • Charlotte won't fall asleep right away now when I lay her down! She spends a half hour pulling up to a stand in her crib. Today her hand slipped through the rail and she smacked her face off the rails. I was watching her on the camera because every time she stands up, I have to go lay her down. She hasn't mastered the getting down peacefully yet-only the crash landing! P.S. After I laid her down, she did it again-twice in a row! :s
  • Not quite the same thing but @DogLoverX3 - your post reminded me that the majority of the time, Zeke smacks his head into objects to make sure he's close enough to pull up on them. If he hits his head, he seems to figure that means he can reach out and pull himself up enough to get to a standing position. Guess he still needs to work on the depth perception thing, lol
  • I thought for sure LO was drooling blood this afternoon, but turns out he had blueberry yogurt for lunch and his spit up was a really dark pink. Freaked me out just the same for a second until I bent down to check though.

The only time he's been hurt is when he was about 3 months and he was propped up in the boppy. He launched himself over the side and onto a jagged dog bone. That drew a little blood from the scrape.

DD has bumped her head a few times as she becomes more mobile. A little girl at daycare scratched her face (very minor) on Friday as well. The worst was probably when I cut her finger clipping her nails!! Boy did I feel awful about the amount of blood but she tolerated it well.

Benjamin pulled himself up to stand on his drawer the other day but decided to try to dive in to it and it shut on his little arms, poor baby! I had stepped out of the room for a second and came back to find him like that.

Valkin decided to belly flop off the couch and when he did he got a nice little bruise on his leg. I think I cried more than he did.
  • Cici has wedge her leg between the changing table and wall with my husband. She cried but when helped was perfectly fine. Tha was a good one though, left a bruise: also, twice now she's bopped herself with a toy and started crying pretty good but both times I tried to console her through talking thinking they weren't bad. I don't want her unable to self soothe and have me rushing every time she bops herself if it seems harmless...well both times left a mark and I felt awful. She was and is ultimately fine and I know there's many many many more to come.
  • LO decided to roll off of her bather and luckily I caught her but not before she bopped her head on the side of the tub. She didn't cry just looked confused when I scooped her up and started crying and hugging her. She bumps herself in the face and head with toys quite a bit and never cries. Not sure if I should be worried because I won't know when she's really hurt.
  • Silas pulled his wooden activity cube down on himself while trying to use it to stand. That was fun. He whacked his head on the edge of a bookshelf while, once again, trying to stand. And I think he bit his tongue while chewing on the remote the other day, with his lone tooth. He was very upset with that one but it didn't stop him from reaching for the remote again seconds later. No blood yet, thank god, but plenty of bruises.
