The "poop" on cloth vs. disposable diapering...

I am considering cloth diapering (after the newborn "flow-plosions" have ceased) and would greatly appreciate anyone else's thoughts and/or insights into the mysterious world of cloth-diapering. Do you plan on using disposables or cloth and why?

  • There have been a couple discussions here on cloth diapering. Lot's of good answers and info here...  https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12662764/cloth-diapering/p1

I have all my cloth from DS so we'll be doing it again. Every baby is different in regards to what works best and it can change as they grow. I stick to ones that all have similar washing instructions and can be bleached to make my washing routine easier. I found my local store to be super helpful and they re-sell diapers so you could try other brands and turn in ones that aren't working for a small store credit. Having enough so that you don't have to wash too often was key for us too.

It's really what's best for you. We started with disposal diapers and I wanted something he could run around in that looked better. So we switched to cloth diapers with a disposable insert. But I'm my opinion and experience our son exploded through the cloth diapers way more than he did in the disposable ones and when we put pants on him while he was in the cloth diaper he looked  like he was so uncomfortable cuz it's so much bigger than disposables. But we have friends who swear by cloth diapers. They love  them. Their babies love  them and they didn't have the same experience we did with the explosion out the back. So I'd say just try both and see what you and baby are comfortable with.
  • We plan to cloth diaper. It's cheaper, better for the environment, and we'll never run out of diapers. We plan to diaper right from the start. I'm thinking the jelly roll fold will help keep the newborn poo in its place.

  • Just a thought! I would love to do cloth diapers but I don't think my daycare would be into it. If you are going to use daycare, check in with them first!

Most daycares will do AIOs or pocket dipes (which mimic sposies), but if not, you can always do disposables at daycare and cloth at home. That's no reason to completely not use them if you want to!

  • This is our 2nd and we will cloth diaper again! I love it! We had several leaks and blow outs the first 4-6 weeks we used sposies and have only had a few with cloth! I love how cute they are, and mostly I love saving money! I am so glad I made that decision with my first and can do it again! I love it!

For us- we do full time daycare from 730-5. So to me it would just be another thing to buy- another thing to maintain and I feel like I would end up spending more money. My desire isn't bad enough. I do non disposable swim diapers though.
