Breast Milk Advice for Hospital

Hi all - my LO was born on July 10 and like his sister, I plan on providing breast milk.  I was an exclusive pumper with DD1 because of severe nipple concerns (that I got the first week at the hospital).  I pumped for a year and was an over producer.

Advice - while you are at the hospital, make sure you drink a lot (obviously)... BUT try to make sure A LOT of what you drink is apple juice (or juice in general), I'd often mix 50/50 water/juice... but when you really aren't eating much (and even if you are) try drinking A LOT of juice (over night or whatever if you are able).  I really think it has something to do with the calories and hydration combo.

The nursing staff could not believe how much colostrum/milk I was pumping a day after he was born, many nurses commented and told me to share with Lactation.  On the way to deliver, I told my husband I thought all the juice with DD1 really drove my supply, so he was sure to keep the juice/fluid coming.

Also - ask Lactaion for "soothie" pads while you are there and lanonlin RIGHT AWAY (they have them).  Keep the soothies in the fridge and apply after feeding/pumping.  When they warm up, take them off, put them in the fridge and put lanolin on.  Always put lanolin on before pumping.

Let me know if you try the juice thing.  I know this could go on another thread but it may help a momma who might not have checked the thread!

Good luck ladies!!!

  • This is really random but I tried the lanolin on before pumping and it was pretty magical so thanks!
  • Juicy juice funded this single case research study ;)
