What are you wearing?

I am at a point where I don't like how anything fits me. And the summer heat is making it worse. Last pregnancy, I was in fall clothes at this point. My work pants (both low panel and high panel) are uncomfortable.  I have a couple dresses, but they are like mu-mu's.  I went shopping on my lunch break to maybe find some better fitting, more comfortable maternity clothes. I tried on a dress at Target that was comfortable but it was white with dark stripes and I could see my underwear through it. They had the same dress in a darker color, but only in a size that is way too small for me. I should check online, because I doubt they will get restocked in store (stores are going to start stocking fall clothes soon...) I then went to Old Navy and tried on a similar style dress. It did not fit - I have never had much luck with the proportions on Old Navy dresses.  I did find a pair of shorts that fit well (even though they aren't maternity).  They are kinda ugly, but pretty comfortable and will be good for the weekends. But for work I am stuck choosing between uncomfortable pants or mu-mu dresses that are borderline too casual for the office...

I've honestly given up on looking cute. I have about 3 shirts I cycle through, two pairs of shorts, and 4-5 dresses. I I bought 2 dresses I got from Motherhood maternity at a fair price (around $30 each), and the other three weren't actually maternity dresses - they are from the Loft but are looser around the tummy area. I actually had them before I got pregnant - so it's nice to know I can keep on wearing them post-pregnancy without looking ridiculous. I think they'll have a few styles that might accommodate a pregnant belly and it's worth checking out (and they always have sales going on). The Loft dresses are a bit on the casual side, but my office is pretty casual and I can dress them up with a cardigan - which I basically just leave at work because no way in hell am I wearing it outdoors

On weekends, and for doing things around the house I've taken to wearing DH's baggy shirts (which, ahem, I also like to sleep in, so yeah, I basically wear my PJ's). I also have these really nice khaki capris from pea in the pod - they were pricy but their stuff is high quality and so worth it!

I can't stand wearing full on pants at all and completely refuse - it's just too hot!

  • Wish I had words of encouragement. I own like 6 maternity shirts, 2 high panel pants and 2 high panel shorts. I feel like at this point I am just trying to survive. I am very short (4'11) so it is impossible to find dresses that look cute when I am not pregnant, so I gave up trying. I am lucky I don't have to dress up for work and I have told them there is a good chance I might start changing into sweat pants in the afternoon. I would say who cares what you look like and wear what is comfortable. Jobs should be a little more understanding to pregnant ladies and if they say something just cry. No one wants a prego lady to cry!!

  • I can completely sympathize. For work I have two shirts, a pair of black pants, and 4 dresses that I cycle through each week. We are allowed to wear jeans on Friday which helps a lot. Oh, and I have exactly one pair of work shoes that fit right now. :)

For casual, I have maybe 4 tank tops that mostly fit, 2 t shirts, and a pair of cutoff jorts. A combo of this stuff is my weekend uniform. I went to Costco last weekend and found some comfy shorts on sale for $8 and I bought two pair in a bigger than normal size, and I have a feeling I will be living in these till the end. They were worth the $16.

Do you have any Facebook moms or kids swap groups in your area? It might be worth it to post that you need summer maternity clothes in xx size, you might find something good. Any friends you can send out an SOS to, just to borrow a few things for a month or two?

    GL!

  • i feel the same way....with my last pregnancy i remember liking my outfits better and had no problem wearing my maternity pants.  This go around i hate wearing the maternity pants (though wearing some today)...i like more form fitting things so it's obvious i'm pregnant and not just packing on pounds, but i cant' seem to find any shirts like that this go around....dresses are nice but i have to wear spandex shorts underneath (chaffing) or leggings to work because they are all too short for work now with my growing belly (yes even the maternity dresses seem to be too short)

I'd love to find a nice tank top dress to wear...but then again i'd run into the chaffing issue

on the plus side, this pregnancy is almost over! way past the 1/2 way mark and just counting down the days/weeks.

I'm over looking cute at work...who cares

  • @erinmarie86 - I also had no problems with my maternity pants last time.  But my starting weight was higher with this pregnancy and the fabric of some of my pants (like the ones I have on now) are not very stretchy. I loved these pants last time! I am torn between just toughing it out or buying clothes that I will only wear a few times. So frustrating!

  • @marajay6  oddly i was at a lower weight to start with this pregnancy but my pants still aren't that comfortable...the "cute" ones are a little too tight or something, they don't stay on good enough in my opinion...and the bigger ones are more comfortable in my legs but really itch my belly....ugh

I'm trying my hardest not to buy any more maternity clothes...however, if you are thinking of purchasing close check out Pink Blush Maternity i have found that most of their clothes, though labeled "maternity" actually still fit and work post pregnancy.  They have a lot of tunic type tops that stretch nicely for your bump and then just return to longer shirts without it

I've enjoyed getting boxes from Le Tote. You pay a monthly fee and you "rent" maternity clothes. Each box has three clothing items and two accessories. You wear each thing as much as you want and send the whole box back when you're ready for another, or keep the box as long as you want. There are coupon codes for discounts on the monthly fee.

Maxi dresses & maxi skirts are my BFFs. A lot of non-maternity maxis still fit the bump, especially ones from Target!
  • Also, Lularoe Cassie skirts are great for maternity wear, even though they're not maternity. I fold over the waistband and wear it under my bump. Comfy and can easily be dressed up for work.

  • For work, I have a handful of shirts/tops, 2 pairs of capri's and 2 pairs of maternity pants.  I'm wearing sandals most days, but they're getting more and more uncomfortable by the day.  I cycle through everything so I'm not wearing the same stuff all the time but it's getting harder as my belly gets bigger and my wardrobe gets smaller.

For home I have some t-shirts, tank tops and a couple of pairs of shorts.  If I could wear leggings all the time I would!
  • I have a few pairs of maternity dress pants, but my mom gave me two pairs of nice dress pants for Christmas and they were a size too large but I held onto them and can wear them now done up under the bump. That aside, I have about 5 tshirts I cycle through and about 3 dressier tops. I just got two pairs of maternity shorts which is nice to have. Most of my other shorts are athletic style so I'm happy to have two pairs of dressier ones. That aside I have one maternity dress from target and I can wear a few of my existing maxi skirts. And a few pairs of jeans too. I got a few things used, but mostly new. I don't think I will buy more unless I can't wear this stuff anymore.
  • I bought those same dresses from Target. The white one, I just wear light-coloured underwear, but really I just wear it at home. The one with more black I like better and get more use out of.
I go to Thyme Maternity and always find something cute.
  • I've gave up all hope on looking cute.  I wear whatever is clean, cool, and comfy.  Even if that means wearing the same shirt multiple times a week.
  • I will say that those women you see on Pinterest with the cute maternity style piss me off.  I'm sorry, I just can't even with them anymore.

I rock a uncomfortable and hot as hell military maternity uniform through the week and then in my off time it's generally running shorts or yoga pants with loose fitting athletic shirts.  I don't care if I look cute or not, it's all about comfort these days.

  • Back when I was student teaching at a grade school there was an about to pop pregnant teacher who seemed to wear the same green velour zip up hoodie and sweatpant set each day. Kind of casual for school, but it fit her well and I'm sure it was comfortable. I totally understand now!

Hope you find at least one thing that you can love for work.

As for me...wish I had a nice bra that fit.

  • My maternity tops are actually getting too small, which is extraordinarily frustrating because I asked the woman at the maternity shop if the shirts were going to accommodate me as I grew and she assured me that they'd cover the bump all the way through. Nope. So now here I am pulling them down as far as they'll go so that you can't see the maternity panel in my pants and I've still got a little over 9 weeks left! Rawr! I refuse to buy more!

I have a couple of dresses and "flowy" tops that I've been wearing a lot of lately, but only with a belt to cinch them in below my bust, otherwise... like OP said... it's like wearing a mumu. With the belt though they're really cute! Best thing? None of them are actually maternity dresses! So I might be able to continue to wear a few after baby.

The underwear situation: My bras are too tight! I spent the money on a new one a size bigger and now it's getting a little snug too. I want to buy a nursing bra but everyone is telling me to wait until closer to due date so I don't buy too small.

Panties? Had to buy new ones this weekend because I was down to 3 pair. Why? THE DOGS! THE FLIPPING DOGS! Those little furry beasts (that I love, truly) got into the laundry basket right before laundry day and destroyed my others. Just ripped them all to shreds. It was an underwear apocalypse. I cried I was so mad and now I laugh because WTF, who does that even happen to?!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Bibliobebe that has definitely happened to me before. When I used to have weimaraners they were especially horrible about getting into the laundry and eating underwear. I was lucky to have any if I forgot to close the laundry off. It's incredibly frustrating and yet also funny because of the ridiculousness of the whole thing!
  • @toimadness1 I am extremely glad to hear I'm not the only one who's gone through that insanity. It makes me feel a lot better about it, knowing that my dogs aren't uniquely neurotic.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Like you @bibliobebe I need new bras. I already bought like 5 new ones (completely outgrew my others - they were c cups now I'm an e at least). I may spend a few bucks to get some extenders to see if that helps with my expanding ribs. But ugh! I don't want to spend more money on them. And for the most part my underwear are good (no dogs to eat them!) but I notice a few are uncomfortable on my tummy now. Boo! I'm going to get by with what I have and spend money on new undies after baby!
  • I have no idea how I am going to find a nursing bra... I wear a 40 H pre pregnancy and *most* of my bras still fit but I don't know where to buy nursing bras in such a large size! And I can't find any websites that look legit. They all look so sketchtastic

I swear I'm going to just wear sports bras forever

I have a few shirts, 2 pairs of shorts, and a couple of dresses. More often than not in just in gym shorts and a tank top, which sucks. So not cute. I just can't keep spending money on stuff that I'll only wear for a couple of months.
I need new underwear. Bad. Mine are uncomfortable and getting too small. I need to find some on clearance.
I have recently spent money on bras. Mine were all so incredibly uncomfortable between my boobs and belly. I got one from Victoria's Secret that fits pretty well now, and got 2 Bravado bras from Amazon that are still just a bit big, because I'll keep growing. I do recommend getting measured because I was in the complete wrong size last week, and those were bras that I had just bought a few weeks earlier (on my own, not being measured).
  • @Megan324 I use Herroom.com. Mostly I like that they stock lots of options for odd sizes. I think you might have to do returns in a timely manner, but never been an issue for me (just something to be aware of!)
  • Right now there are a lot of free flowing tops in the non-maternity sections in many stores (Eg. Target, Ross, etc.)  I have a lot of these types of tops in addition to my maternity clothes.  They fan out as they go down and tend to be more of a tunic length, so they are very accommodating to a growing bump, and will still look cute when you are not pregnant.  I have some skirts with fold over waist bands a size up from what I would normally wear that work.  I have found some non-maternity maxi dresses that work for me.  I would recommend having a handful of different pants that work for you, and a wider array of shirts and tops.  A lot of non-maternity tank tops are stretchy enough to be accommodating.  Honestly, a good chunk of the actual maternity clothes I have I bought second hand.  There isn't as much of a mark-up, and how long are you going to really need these pieces for anyways?
  • I wear mostly dresses or leggings. I have several non-maternity casual/t-shirt type dresses. But I'm not working now. DS was due in August, and I worked last time. I had a lot of luck getting nice dresses from Asos.com.

  • Im living in maternity tanks from target and capri pants that are not maternity but have a horrid elastic waistband and 2 sizes bigger than my normal. Also found my old shorts from when I boxed amd if i keep the below the bump they fit great. Lightweight mesh bliss.

  • I am wearing mostly maxi skirts 4-5 days per week.  Also leggings and tunics.  I have two pair of side panel shorts that are great and I wear them with simple tops.

I have a few Target dresses that I got back in March and they fit and are super comfy.  I also did Stitch Fix for my pregnancy and got some great options, although I'm sure that won't work for you at this point.

  • I recently went to Old Navy and found a number of items in their non-maternity clothing that are wonderfully comfortable.  I love these soft drapy pants.  The elastic is not tight so they fit over my belly without constricting.  Since they're not maternity and don't have a panel, I can wear them with stretchy shirts and tanks that I wore before pregnancy.
Then the shape of this sleeveless swing dress is roomy enough for a belly, though requires leggings since the belly makes it rise to a bit too short for comfort.  I have several pairs of the full panel capri leggings from Maternity Motherhood that I pair with the dress above and a number of different tunic-shaped sleeveless dresses/long shirts that I bought from various retailers over the past couple months.

Between the drapy pants with a tight shirt and the leggings with a loose tunic, I actually feel reasonably fashionable most of the time!

I'm really lucky in that we have a scrub machine at work. On the days I have to wear my uniform I go with the dressier one because the Cammo boots are impossible to a) stuff my feet in b) bend over and lace up and c) wear for longer than 5 min because they hurt so badly. The dress shoes I can leave tied loosely and have room for my sausage feet.

As as far as off days, I repeat a combo of maternity shorts I got at the local thrift and t-shirts on clearance at Macy's. I wish I had broken down and bought a maternity bathing suit. But at this point - I'm too cheap to buy anything for just the next 4 1/2 weeks.

Regarding bras, I have a friend who just had twins and is nursing. So I imagine the full/empty size variance is pretty significant. She said she had tried some expensive brands and was frustrated. Her lactation consultant recommended Walmart nursing bras, they're under $15 and she raves about them.

@megan324 There are kits to turn your regular bras into nursing bras. A seamstress should also be able to do it if you can find the clips.

Please hold while I find a link....

eta: Nordstroms apparently converts bras for a fee

And a a quick search reveals lots of kits and tutorials. GL!

  • I'm past the feeling cute stage. I have a few shirts, 1 pair of jeans and 2 pairs of shorts that fit me. As much as I'd love to buy some new clothes, I'm only going to wear them for a few more weeks so it's not worth it.

  • I'm officially tired of maternity clothes. Like, today. Yesterday they were cute, today I'm tired of them. I think this is probably because I have so few things that actually still fit so I'm wearing it all over and over and over again. I arranged my closet and finally put aside the T-shirts and tanks that no longer fit at ALL (too short) and there were so many that ended up on the "can't wear now" side that I just got fed up.

But, wearing the same ole 5 shirts over and over is really such a small thing when I've got this awesome little person growing inside. *sigh* I've just got to woman up and get over it.
