second time moms - pack n play question

I'm a second time mom and need help deciding to buy a new pack n play or not. Is the bassinet worth it? With my first I used the mini arms reach co sleeper in my room and then her crib. I was a stay at home mom. At 8 months I opened my in home daycare and by then she was too big for the bassinet part of the pack n play and so she only ever used the lower level. We travel alot to camp and family. There is 5 years difference so I don't have a pack n play and not sure if it is worth the extra cost. This time I only have one month of maternity and then I have to start working in my daycare again. thoughts? advice?
Oh I forgot to mention my daughter was 9lbs6ozs when she was born and I'm pregnant with a boy this time. My daughter grow fast so not sure.

Re: second time moms - pack n play question

  • My daughter slept in the pack n play with the higher level in our room. Then we used it for over nighters at relatives very often. We bought it used for maybe $40. We think it has been very useful.

  • It's so different for everyone, I wish I knew the right answer.
We have had a pack and play for our 2 LOs for travelling, naps in the living room, naps outside, etc... We got a lot of use out of it, and plan on using it again if needed.
My best friend has had her pack play since her first LO, she is about to have her third as well, and never used it. I think the only time it got used was when I was over with my youngest and he needed a nap.
I hope you find what works best for you!! Good luck! :)

  • I'm a FTM, but we are planning to use the pack n play in our bedroom to start out.  I specifically bought one that had the bassinet feature because I figured it would be easier for me to get him in and out for MOTN feedings.  Our pack n play also has the "napper" and "diaper change" features which we decided not to use at this time.  No idea if this will work the way it does in my head, but that's the plan to start!

As for cost, I will say that I've seen people selling all versions of pack n plays in various Facebook mom groups and other places (like yard sales and Craigslist).  They're usually much cheaper then brand new.  If you haven't looked there I would!  You can probably find a good deal and that way you at least have the option without the full price tag.

Lurking from aug 16. We bought a pack n play and have used the bassinet attachment twice. We have an actual bassinet which gets plenty of use in the very beginning.

I also have several friends who have used the pack n play without the attachment from day one. If you already have a pack n play, i would say skip it.
  • I think that it depends on how much you are going to use it. I had one with a changing table (no separate napper), the newborn higher level and the lower level for my daughter (who was over 9 pounds as well). She slept in the higher level for the first two months, and then was moved into her crib. But we used it for traveling, we had another one (given to us) that we used for camping), and we brought it over to grandparents houses if they were watching her for a long time and needed somewhere to put her once she was mobile. I ended up hating the changing table part and never used it, I also never used the attachment that could hold diapers/wipes/lotions/etc because it was super flimsy. But I honestly used the crap out of the pack'n'play as a whole.

  • I agree that it just depends on personal preference and what other baby equipment/your sleep training habits you have. I am on my 3rd and have never used a pack n play with any of my kiddos!
  • We use it to travel. We have it set up in our room now but he prefers to sleep in the swing.
  • We also use our pack and play for when we travel and it came with a sleeper and a changer. It's set up in the play room and we use it to change ds who is 13 months and also use it just as a safe place to put him when I need to shower etc. i dont use it for a newborn we use a rock and play.
  • It's good for travel, at the very least, regardless of what you have at your house. We used the bassinet downstairs, a co-sleeper upstairs until our son was big enough and on a nap "schedule" and using the crib. But still got use out of PnP at overnights at inlaws, etc.
  • I'm a stm to be and I never had a pack n play last time and won't again. I have a co-sleeper, a rock n play, and bouncers and it was enough holders for me.
