10 Month Nap Issues

Our son will be 10 months in one week...and it appears we have hit a wall with naps suddenly.

It has been taking him SO long to fall asleep for them.  For example, this morning it took him about 30+ minutes before he fell asleep, and he still has not fallen asleep for his afternoon nap.  It is now 4:22 in the afternoon.  Looks like this nap will not happen today, he has now been awake for over FIVE hours.    I can't even think of a day when he entirely skipped a nap, besides when he was reeeeally young.  Not sure what the issue is.

His wake times look like this.
6:00-6:40 wake up
2.5 - 2.45 hours between morning wake up and 1st nap
3.5 - 3.45 hours between 1st nap and 2nd nap
7:15ish bedtime

I don't even know how he will make it to bedtime tonight (I will move it a little earlier).  But still, this is just craziness.  This is so not like him.  He usually could take anywhere from 10-20 minutes to fall asleep...but completely refusing a nap?  No way!  His naps seem to be shortening lately too, they used to be about 1.5 hours, now it seems like he's becoming regular with 1.15 naps.

Anyone else going through some major nap resisting?

Stressing me out!!

Re: 10 Month Nap Issues

  • Mine has been dropping a nap a day pretty regularly lately. Sometimes it's the morning nap. Sometimes the afternoon. We don't have a nap schedule, he sleeps when he is tired but lately naps are either super short or non existent entirely. He is sleeping like shit at night too. There is a leap at 40 weeks, a 9-12 mos sleep regression, teething, growth spurts. It could be a number of things. I just hope it's temporary and I can get my sweet boy back soon, he's been a total asshole at times lately and it's not his style at all. Not alone mama.

YES! Hahaha! I'm so happy you said this!  Our son has been too!  He's become so demanding and dramatic!  Feeding him is a nightmare...he hardly drinks his bottles without an absolute fight and his solids are now difficult too!  He swats the spoon away, pushes his food onto the floor, etc.  He's been a lot more challenging recently!! Ready to get through this!
  • @lmbrandt are we talking about the same kid?!! Seriously all of the above. My sitter was like, Um what happened to your sweet baby?? Lol

most meals are a fight. He's so whiney sometimes!! And he never used to cry but now he will just stand in his crib or pack n play and scream bloody murder. Ssooooo dramatic!!! I miss my sweet angel!
  • All of this. Fighting food and bottles all of a sudden.

And it's probably early to only take 1 nap a day but that's all my daughter has been taking for almost a month. And it's a short nap too. 40 min-1 hr MAX.

She usually goes down easily for the night although she fights it occasionally. Sleeps pretty well overnight. Most nights straight through occasionally waking up once and going back down easily. Sleeps 13 hours overnight so I guess makes up for the lack of a second nap there? I don't know.

I feel like her sleep schedule is so different to every other baby I know.

  • This is mine to a T. She's decided 3 times in the last week to boycott her afternoon nap. And she's a pro at pulling up in her crib and throwing her pacifier out, so when I go in there I have to lay her back down and hunt around in the dark looking for her pacifier, the cat has found it first a few times and that's the end of the pacifier.

And man is she tough to feed purées to.  Even with mixing in finger foods. And her favorite thing to do is to toss her bowls/spoons/toys on the floor, but if I don't pick them up for her, the little stinker clamps down her jaws and refuses to eat. I thought it was supposed to be the "terrible two's" not the terrible 10 months. And, what a little attitude she's got right now. I miss my sweet baby.

Yes! This is my fear!  We can't drop to one nap yet!!  At his 9 month appointment the doctor was asking about his naps and I told him he takes two a day, about 1.5 hours each.  And he was saying that was great he will probably have 2 naps until at least 12 months, maybe even 15 months!

So this is like night and day for him!  He went from doing great to this current mess!  I'm hoping our overnight sleep doesn't get funky, he's been pretty good with that.  Sleeps about 7:15/7:30 - 6:15/6:30.

    He's become SO moody!!

Yes! He'll take a couple spoons of his puree, and then I go to give him another and he swats the spoon away.  food flies EVERYWHERE.  Then he takes his hands and wipes it ALL over his hair.  And he'll clamp his mouth shut too!  We've had a few meals lately where he's hardly eaten anything because he just throws a fit and refuses!  Pushes all his finger foods onto the floor or his lap.  SUCH A MESS.
  • My DD will be 10 months on Sunday. The past 2 weeks have been hard. First I think she was going through her wonder week leap and then on the 4th of July we kept her up past her bed time and I think it affected all last week. Basically for 2 weeks she was fussy, loud, got upset easily, didn't want to nap!! Took forever to fall asleep!! Knock on wood this weeks seems to be SO much better! I told my hubby tonight I think we have our happy girl back!
  • @rebekahrathe, glad to hear things are getting better!!  We are still in a funk with him right now, he's 10 months tomorrow. His naps are still off, they aren't nearly as long as they normally are.  And he's just been really cranky and fussy too!  I looked in his mouth and it looks like he may have two more teeth working their way down, hard to tell...he hates when we try and look in there!

You give me hope that things will go back to normal soon!!  ;)
