Yoga and other exercise

Any other moms doing prenatal yoga?

I like my classes, but feel as though they're almost too slow. Could be because of instructor or studio.

I also go on daily walks or hikes.

How's everyone else keeping active?

Re: Yoga and other exercise

  • I'm not doing actual classes anywhere, I'm just doing yoga from home daily. I also go swimming a few times a week and I go on walks with my husband most evenings while we catch Pokemon because we're in our early to mid twenties and Pokemon was a big part of our childhoods.

  • I do prenatal yoga at home. There are some great videos on YouTube. Before I was pregnant i also did tae Bo videos at home as well. I am able to still do this but just at a slower pace.
  • I am doing prenatal yoga once a week in a studio and a bit at home plus walks. The prenatal classes are a bit slow for being 20-24 weeks, but should be about perfect as we get farther along ;)

  • I'm still working out three times a week with my trainer. We've toned down what we typically do but I'm still doing free weights, squats, lunges, push ups etc. I'd love to do yoga too but I'm so busy at work I just don't know when I'd have time right now.

I think you're exactly right. I like it now, just find it incredibly slow.
  • Hey I haven't posted much it's been nuts around here but I do prenatal yoga too.  I actually love the slow pace of it and the instructor gives neck massages at the end of each class.  My DD is almost 2 and that is fast enough for me  :)
  • I'm doing Crossfit 4-5 days a week and playing in a recreational softball league on Sunday with my DH

  • I'm a crossfiter too, 2 days a week, plus a day or two of spin and a weekend hike or rowing at home. I'm a runner but have been pretty uncomfortable so have hung that up until baby comes. I keep meaning to start yoga per my doctor's advice. She says it'll help my anxiety, so actually looking forward to the slower pace.
  • I just started yoga since becoming pregnant, and I love it. In addition to my prenatal class, I'm also attending a Yoga 101 class, so intended to be fairly basic moves, but everyone else in the class isn't pregnant, so the instructor tends to up the intensity when she thinks people can handle it. I modify as necessary and end up getting great workouts every time I go. Maybe a class like that would work better for you too?

I'll be interested to hear how you and your coaches modify movements as you progress! My coaches have been very supportive and creative, but I'd love to get new ideas from you as well. Plus plank jacks in place of sit ups and T2B are getting pretty boring lol

I do the CF endurance program with one specific coach. I'm a distance runner, so I use CF to supplement that training. So far there hasn't been a ton that I have to modify. I still do TTB with no problem.. just used them today in place of v-ups, actually. Otherwise... it's all planking for me, too! If you're looking for ideas, there's this program run by an amazing woman in LA: https://www.birthfit.com/ I did an in-person consult with her but Birthfit blog is a great resource. The only thing I've definitely modified is the weight load... I try to only let myself fail once in any given workout, so I've definitely been lifting lighter.

I've been doing a regular (not prenatal) yoga class with some modifications. All the prenatal classes around here assume you don't have a job and are at like 3pm on Thursdays. I also walk a fair amount as part of my work commute, and try to walk a little extra on the weekends. I used to go to the gym every other day on top of this before pregnancy, but couldn't do anything in the early first tri and never really got back to my routine. I'm actually thinking of canceling my gym membership since now I only use it for the yoga class, and I find I can do yoga at home that is a little more tailored to my pregnant needs.
  • Zumba has been my go to workout. I tried slow flow yoga and struggled with poses with a belly. I'll be trying prenatal yoga soon to get preggie approved poses.
  • I would try another studio with prenatal classes in your area - I first started prenatal yoga at one studio, and it was so slow and tedious I only went once. About 2 months ago I tried it at a different studio in my city, and it was a completely different vibe. Much faster-paced, and it makes me feel like I am actually exercising and stretching out all of my sore muscles. I think a lot depends on the specific studio and the teacher. The studio I switched to has about six teachers who rotate through the twice-weekly prenatal classes and each teacher has their own style and rhythm

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm going to try a different night with a different instructor at the same studio this week.

If still way too slow I'm planning on trying out a new studio in September. I've already prepaid for the summer session.
  • I'm still really enjoying doing my barre class at least 3x a week! It's different but the instructors have been wonderful at giving me modifications!

Good for you! 2 doctors, 2 nurses said no more soccer from the get-go. It's probably been the biggest adjustment for me these last 21 weeks! haha

I bet!! It's so interesting to me the variety of advice from doctors regarding physical activity and exercise when pregnant.

  • Giving the gym 1 last shot before I cancel my membership because I just can't make myself go after work BUT another lady here goes to the gym on her lunch break and I will be trying to do the same. At the gym I do weighted squats and weight machines (as I have no spotter). At home I do yoga.
