Baby Sign Help?!

Hey guys!! I really want to do baby sign with my LO but am not having ANY luck!! We are trying to start with 'more' and do the sign for 'all done', and all we get is a look from her that's like, "Mom, Dad, you're crazy". Lol she's almost 10 months old, I feel like she should be getting the gist..? I did baby ASL when I worked in the infant room at a daycare and most of the kids did it pretty well and they were her age or younger. Am I doing something wrong or missing something, or do I just have a stubborn child? She starting to show her frustration now by screaming and it would be a good time for her to be able to communicate! Thanks for any advice, guys!

  • We have been doing signs since the day baby was born. He knows "milk" (he can recognize it but can't sign it) because obviously it's the most frequent and important so far. But otherwise he has no idea what any of them are as far as we can tell and he's been seeing them for 9 months. Just like with everything else, one day it will just click.

"I'm having fruit salad for dinner. Well, it's mostly just grapes, actually. Ok all grapes. Fermented grapes. Fine, I'm having wine for dinner."
  • I agree to just be consistent and eventually she'll get it. I'm finding with my LO that the ones he learns are the ones that are important to him - I know you are doing the ones that seem important, but maybe try one that's going to be more meaningful to her, like something specific. For example, we've been doing "all done" FOREVER but he never wants to stop eating, so he hasn't learned it. "Milk" though we use for nursing and he really responded to that. I wouldn't have expected that, so maybe experiment with different signs and see if something sticks.
  • Just be consistent, and it will come! From starting solids (6 months) we've done 'all done' and 'more'. She signed 'more' at 8 months. Thats with sitting at the table with other children and myself, 4 times a day, signing every single time she is handed food. The older kids love it, DD1 is very enthusiastic and never misses an opportunity. She started 'all done' a bit later, and she now uses it everywhere. She wriggles and scoots during a diaper changes while repeatedly signing 'all done'. Same if she doesn't like something or wants to be put down. Hubby sprayed her with the sprinkler and she signed it.

Ive had no luck signing 'nurse'. She just says 'Momomom' with her arms out, and when I pick her up she drops her head wayy back. At that point I say 'oh, you want to nurse (and sign it), but at that point she's not paying attention at all.

  • I am with you.  My other two were signing by now, this one wants no part of it.  She laughs when I sign "more" and asks for food by saying "mmmmm" when she's hungry and also when she wants more.  She tells us she's finished by throwing the rest of her food on the floor.  Lol.  One day...

  • @tlc11934 your LO sounds just like mine!!! Hahaha she makes "mmmmm" sounds whenever she is eating something she really likes. That's about as much communication as we get! Lol
